Are you PUMPED about Wii Fit? You get to stand on a board which sounds like the second best form of exercise (after sitting on a board)
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
I am not PUMPED about Wii Fit. Only about GTA IV.
Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :
That is incredible; I thought it was virtually impossible to sell out of DVD based media just because it's so cheap and easy to manufacture.
Anyway. I pre-ordered mine aaages ago, so I'll be fine. Loi.
I haven't booked the day off work on Tuesday, but I don't have to as I won't have a job then anyway.
Posted by MiscellaneousFiles (Member # 60) on :
I'm so pumped about GTA IV that I'm not going to buy it until June in order to savour the anticipation for an extra couple of months. If that still isn't enough for me, I might even wait for the PC release.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
I don't know why I'm lying to myself in saying that I'm not going to bother getting it for a few months. It's pretty obvious that I'll buckle and preorder within the next couple of days, if not wait outside Game at midnight to buy a copy like I did with San Andreas.
Plus I've got next week off, to watch the snooker. So I can spend a fair amount of the week in my pants playing it.
It's going to happen isn't it
What are the odds of x360 and ps3 people being able to play together? none.
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
None. Imagine how much more heated the battles in something like Call of Duty 4 would be if you could have literal platform wars. It's what the xbox community needs to bring it together. It would almost be worth trying to link the two networks, just for that. As long as some kind of patch was applied to the xbox version of the game, to cut the frame rate in half.

I must say that I'm rather non-plussed by this.
I'd have expected you to walk out of your house, punch a few passers-by, drag somone out of their car (despite their cries of, "Yo! What you doin', muthafucka? Dat my ride!"), drive straight over to the nearest branch of Game, fire a bazooka straight through the front window, then take a flamethrower to the whole neighbourhood.

I have to choose which console to get as this year's freebie in June. I'm leaning toward the PS3 at the moment, but I suppose I might consider the 360 if someone gives me a reason to. Plenty of you have one or the other, so what's the forum verdict?
Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :
Get a 360 if you want more choice in games and a better online experience.
Choose a PS3 if you want to watch Blu-ray films or if the volume of the hum your console makes is an important factor. (Or if you want to play Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid)
I'd go for the 360. Although if you're thinking of selling the console on you'd probably get more for the PS3
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
I don't know man. Lot of people selling their PS3s these days.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
Well it depends. If you like games, you should get a PS3. If, however, you like being called a fagot by 12 year old Americans while getting your arse kicked at any one of the 567 identical FPS that make up the 'espansive' list of available titles, then sure, get yourself a 360.
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
I think it would be more accurate to say "if you like FEWER games then you should get a PS3."
Also, if you're freaked out by having too much choice, you don't like downloadable content, or you like games that contain lots of features and surprises, then definitely go for the PS3. Also if fast frame rates make you feel queasy, then again. PS3. They like to keep that shit locked down.

Quality/quantity and all that.
Let's face it, if you're interested in watching high definition films then you may as well get a PS3 anyway.

Meh. Blu-ray is never going to replace DVD so I think I'll wait until the next proper format comes out.

Well, that's really just a matter of opinion isn't it. disagree with you.
Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :
quote:Originally posted by Ringo: Quality/quantity and all that.
That doesn't really make sense. Most of the generic shit FPSs like Turok and Turning Point and Jericho also came out on the PS3. It's just that the better stuff like Gears of War, Mass Effect and Ace Combat 6 came out on the 360, not the PS3, and none of those are FPSs. And then there's Halo 3. You surely can't be arguing that PS3 line up is quality over quantity because it gets crap like MOH: Airborne and doesn't get Halo 3?
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
Don't forget though that Haze is coming out soon on the PS3. Then you'll be able to play something pretty similar Halo3, just not quite as good. And maybe one day Killzone 2 will come out for the PS3.
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
also if you get a ps3 you can join waynster, darryn and ringo for some multiplayer. Getting a 360 only means that you'll end up being bombarded with messages saying "Mister Egg invites you to play" when you're trying to watch your download of Top Secret!
[ 24.04.2008, 11:08: Message edited by: Kanye West ]
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
Well that's surely just focusing on things which have already come out. If it wasn't obvious, I was joking about the generic FPS.
But I think personally that there are more titles which appeal to me coming out for PS3 than for X360. Things like GT5, Wipeout HD, Little Big Planet, and there are plenty more. There are also plenty of other decent titles which are coming out cross-format.
If you're talking about exclusives, then it seems to me that most of the major exclusives for x360 (and yeah, you can probably correct me on this but it's how it seems) are FPS. And if you're like me and don't actually like console FPS games, then there's not much draw there.
Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :
If you do get a PS3 at least you will be able to play Oblivion which will make you happy.
However, you will not be able to play Bioshock which is one of the most amazing "FPS" games I've played.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
Well I'm sure if Misc wanted to play Bioshock he'd just, y'know, get it for his PC.
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
thing is ringers, you probably don't hear about the live arcade titles that are released each week, some of which are fairly awesome. over 120 of those bad boys now.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
Ok, that's something the x360 has going for it. I'm not saying the 360 is shit, I'm just saying I'd lean towards the PS3 because I prefer the kind of titles which are being released for it. I don't think that's so hard to understand really.
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
I heard somebody talking about a good thing with the ps3 that if you get a message over PSN, you have to quit the game to read it.

I've just been to the store here and reserved my copy - get it at around 9.30 am tomorrow, then after tuesday I have 6 days off to enjoy it. Darryn, you can pre-order at the free record shop on the langeleidsestraat and probably any other branch, and they are no longer doing the silly pre-order thing where you pay 10 euros - now its just they scribble down your name and number and tell you to pick it up tomorrow or loose it.
Damn I am pumped and psyched - this was the game I bought the PS3 for. I even have my pants ready and shall despatch my flatmate away from the house for the week - Sod looking for a new job, I'm off bitch slapping and Twocing for 6 days solid!
Posted by Waynster (Member # 56) on :

So what, are you no working anymore now and getting paid till the end of the month or do you still have to attend ?
Posted by Waynster (Member # 56) on :
No I am still having to "attend", though I am making a point of just doing basic incident management - helping my girls out, as they really seem to appreciate me.
All project work I have just dropped - I'm half messing about with silly things, the other half job hunting and dreaming of GTA IV
Judging by the reaction in the shop, if you are going to wing it, wing it very early - seems a lot of people have been reserving copies at the free record shop - I'd play it safe and do the same

Been over at GTA Forums reading what I can from people who have got it - one guys hates it because the driving sucks (controls are different, and you can't turn corners at 90 miles an hour before). Everyone else seems to love it - the driving takes a little getting used to, but some people are saying when you do have it nailed its a joy to drive.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :
Just taking a quick break. The opening cut scene of the game is fantastic - it's funny and smart and appropriately enough the first word's are "Oh YES! Daddy's back!" A few people seem to complain about the driving - I found it pretty easy to get to grips with. Hand-to-hand combat is more of a problem as it relies on skill and timing rather than the mongoloid button mashing I was attempting. The city is a marvel - it's absolutely as much of a character as the devs claimed, and I've already laughed out loud at a couple of the radio ads. The characters are really expressive and emotive, which ads loads to the experience - it's a really clever storytelling device, the next step up from the emotional response the HL2 characters generate.

I did get in the end, as I'm sure keen watchers of xbox live are aware. Put in a solid 10 hours, 25% of the way through. It's good. Everything said about it so far is true. But It's also very GTA. The stoyyline gameplay is still drive from A to B, have a shoot out, drive back. Cut scene. I guess that's what fans want, and it's not that it isn't enjoyable, it's just very familiar. Before I finished I was doing the old "follow from a safe distance" mission and I did start to feel a bit fatigued. But that was probably becuase I'd been on it for ten hours.
Got used to the driving now though. The main thing about the game I like is that rather than constantly tempting you with your potential to cause carnage and chaos, I find great pleasure in actually being a good citizen. Not crashing all the time. Paying my toll on bridges. Behaving like a normal person, apart from when I'm called to kill people. But I can't say much that hasn't already been said.
It's probably the first time in a GTA game that's also pleasurable just to pull up in your car and watch the world around you. Or take a stroll.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
It's kinda nice to drive fast but in a measured, non-carnage-causing fashion.
But it's the little touches that really bring the game to life. The first time I managed to drag a person down the street after jacking their car I was like "heh, that's excellent" but then I realised that if you timed the steering just right, you could swing the hapless victim right into the path of oncoming traffic where they'll be torn from the car with a sickening crunch.
I could actually sit here for hours listing all the little incidental details that have amused me or brought the game to life, but instead I'm just going to get back to playing it.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
y'know 25% in 10 hours is fairly impressive. I've just got to 25% and that's with like 18 hours of play. Though I've been exploring for ages today so very little real progress. Maybe this evening I'll try to work some more through the story.

I looked for this on the way home yesterday but the only places that had it in stock had it for £44.99 which I refuse to pay.
I've just reserved it for collection from Argos on the way home for £39.99 which I'm more happy with.
I'm not sure why a fiver makes such a difference in my mind but I definitely wasn't prepared to pay what was very close to £50 whereas I'm Ok paying £40. Odd.
Posted by Waynster (Member # 56) on :
I'm not playing this constantly, not that I am getting in any way bored or frustrated with it but I just want to enjoy it as much for a long time, so I am only about 10% of the way through - I'm also spending time not going through all the missions straight off - been messing around with various things - I even watched TV on it for about an hour yesterday which was most entertaining.
This game is much darker than previous ones, and certainly more violent, but it is phenomenal. There are wonderful little touches like Ringo said, and I will not spoil them here, but where as I do stop to do other things I get drawn back to it very easily. It is by far worth the wait, and I am thinking probably the greatest game of modern times. Completely enthralling and without doubt, the greatest game I have played in a very long time.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
The Liberty City version of Time Square is absolutely breathtaking, especially at night. The only slight disappointment is that this beautifully rendered, mind bogglingly intricate rendering of a thriving city isn't slightly more interractive. The rows of locked doors and 2d images of shop interiors do detract slightly from the immersive experience.
But this really is a minor point.

Unsurprisingly, Gamespot have given GTA4 a 10.0
One little quirk of the game though which I’ve found particularly annoying, and I don’t know if this is the case for the x360 version as well, is that the ‘sprint’ button and the ‘answer your phone’ button are the same. So if you’re tap tap tapping your way along the path, perhaps while trying to escape from police or a would-be assailant, and your phone starts to ring, unless you’re quick you’ll pretty much automatically answer the phone. Which means you can’t sprint for some reason and your ability to do some things is limited. It has cost me my life several times and is kind of frustrating.
Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :
The answer phone button is the same as the run button on the xbox. Fortunately I've not had any problems with that yet as much like in real life no fucker ever bothers to ring me.
Well, that's not entirely true, but I haven't been rung while running from the police yet.
I'm enjoying it a lot. Little Jacob (is that is name) I find irritating as I literally can't understand what he's saying. My TV seems to have issues with this game in that even on max brightness it's still a bit dark and I have to turn the volume up to almost full to actually hear conversations.
I've been spending most of my time recently just pissing around the city trying to get Gamer Points as at the moment I'm beating Benway and I need to try to keep that lead.
Perforiming 10 counters in 4 minutes is proving to be tricky as although it's easy to get 2 counters against one person in about 15 seconds, then having to find 4 other people who are prepared to fight and get through those fights without the cops turning up is proving impossible.
I've also been failing to pull a 500m wheelie on a motorbike. Admittedly I was trying to get this achievement with Ramon on the back of the bike whilst being chased by cops but still I thought that was a good idea. The added weight at the back should make it easier to wheelie. Right? Umm.
The thing that annoys me about this game is that the targetting seems quite poor if you have multiple people close to you. Sometimes I've been in a fight with two people and it either keeps focussing on the one furthest from me or occasionally spinning me around 180 degrees to focus on some guy sitting on a bench or something which doesn't help much.

It's pretty bad. I don't think you'd ever get a man being attracted to a computer representation of a woman.

anyway, I'd like to welcome the most recent members of team xbox - jhonj and mcandrew. 'Jump in', etc. Once tilde sorts himself out, we're going to have sweet Call of Duty games.

In the past Sony have counted Units sold as Units sold to shops rather than to customers while Microsoft and Nintendo report units actually sold to customers.
I don't know if this is still true, but it definitely used to be.
Posted by New Way Of Decay (Member # 106) on :
Of course they're overtaking sales. I mean, there's only about ten people left in the world who don't have an EggsBocks and there's got to be at least 11 people who bought the PS3
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
Don't think you understand mikee, they're saying that more people in europe now have PS3 than x360. Not that it's outsold in a certain month or something.
Though I'm sure MS could claim double sales figures if they counted all the new ones they've had to send out to replace the RRODs

It's not about understanding. I didn't read the article.

also soon you will be able to play a more expensive version of second life, kitting out your virtual pad with virtual tvs, showing the latest videos from the highly esteemed Sony artist Avril Lavigne. Not only that, but you could message up some buddies over PSN and watch it together! This is Living

as much as I enjoy all this, I should point out that I don't totally hate sony. I spent most of monday playing Patapon and Crush on the PSP. I could have been playing N+ with jnhoj or GTA with 'Seb Newman', but instead, I played PSP on my own. I will also get God of War for the PSP at some point. I know there are a couple of PSP owners here, so perhaps we could swap stories of the quirky yet engrossing titles that pop up for that machine every now and again. Not Loco Roco though. That's so over.
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
on the old Nintendo Dual Screen, I am also enjoying The world ends with you, the new non final fantasy game from square enix, but fuck me, I can't control the fighting on the top screen at all, which puts me at a pretty big disadvantage in terms of getting the most out of it. But it's a radical game in both senses of the word, with some sweet tunes, nice art, and an interesting ARG themed plotline. Also still playing Prof. Layton, but only the same bit over and over again because the G4 card has a habit of really draining the batteries when you leave the DS in standby, and I keep forgetting save.

I keep seeing those PSP releases, patapon et al and thinking I would really like to get myself a PSP. They should make ports of more of them for the PS3 I think, like they did with Loco Roco.
Maybe when PS3 TV is released I'll get myself a PSP

if you had a psp we could show each other our boners using the new wifi video conferencing thing they've put out there. That would be stylin'!

I hear tell that 4.0 firmware will give PSP Divx direct so no more crappy conversion for movies..
I hardly have any games though.. Echocrome is good.
You can but PSP games direct now through the PS3 store, there's one called BEATS that looks OK.

quote: THIEVES performed a bank-job style heist on a Newbury computer game store by drilling through the wall of a neighbouring shop.
Gamestation at the north end of Northbrook Street was burgled during the early morning hours of April 29 and 18 sought-after Nintendo Wii consoles were stolen along with a Playstation 3.
According to police, the thieves gained access to the building by cutting a hole in the roof and slipping inside, before knocking down an internal wall to get to the secure store room where the expensive consoles were kept. However, Gamestation spokesman Nick Attenborough, said that the thieves actually broke into McDonalds Restaurant first and bashed through the wall joining the two properties.
No mention of the xbox 360, I notice...

Every time I play it I seem to spend hours just enjoying all the details. I spent a good three hours just surfing the net in a tw@ cafe the other day. My progress through the missions isn't brilliant because I keep getting distracted. Not that I'm complaining. But I'm making a point of not letting it suck me in every day. I only play a couple of times a week and when I set aside a good evening to play it.

Same as me - I can't be doing with rushing through this one for some kudos of being one of the first to complete it - I'd much rather drink it all in during little sessions of joy, and not do what one of my mates did and phoned in sick as he was up three days straight playing it (and this is a 51 year old by the way!)
Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :
I've spent literally hours trying to win the first car race. Came so, so close three times in a row last night, but kept stacking my vehicle into oncoming traffic on the final straight. I don't get that many chances to practice the race as Octavia can't stand Brucie's voice.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
I won that on my first try but I think it might have been more to do with luck than talent/superior console
Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :
I've never been good at the races in GTA, though. With this one my tactic has been to start shooting at my opponents' tyres as soon as the race starts, which works pretty well in letting me get to second place. You occasionally pick up some police attention, but this seems to disrupt the NPCs as much as it does me.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
Ah right, I just raced. Didn't bother shooting anything. I find it almost impossible to control the car while firing a weapon.
Posted by MiscellaneousFiles (Member # 60) on :
I found the races in San Andreas almost insultingly easy. The AI cars would often get stuck, or drive each other off cliffs, which (coupled with the rather simple driving physics) didn't make for the most challenging racing. I hear the driving is a bit more realistic in IV.
Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :
Done a couple of races, alright I suppose.
I think one criticism I've got of this game is how most of the missions that aren't part of the main story seem to involved driving from the middle island to the island on the right. Every time I go to nick a car or go out with a pal I end up having to make the increasingly tedious journey over the bridge, through the toll, out the slip on the right. And then back again. And the whole friend system of going out eating and bowling and darts etc gets a bit...grindy. Like, well, I know that I need to get this person up to beyond 80% to get the friendship benefits, but I'm currently at 30%, which means a LOT of driving backwards and forwards between the two main islands.
Anyway I've clocked up between 30 and 40 hours I think now, and still going, on about 55% completion. The story has a couple of nice turns, but it's still not blowing me the fuck away. I guess you have to see it through to get the hype.

Do you think you might enjoy it more if you weren't forcing your way through it like it was a second job or something?
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
If I've got a criticism it's that some of the voice acting is really weak. Nico in particular, which is kind of surprising. You can excuse hammy charicatures like Brucie and Little Jacob, but for your main protagonist to have such painfully poor voice 'talent' is kind of unforgivable. Especially given the amount of effort put into the rest of the game.

I'm not forcing my way through it, so that doesn't really make any sense.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :
On Xbox 360? You could try Dead or Alive 4 if you enjoy beating the crap out of beautiful women with big jiggling tits. Like a better Mortal Kombat. With big jiggling tits. I'm not sure what your view is on stuff like that; sometimes you seem to find it a subversive pleasure, or a political statement to be embraced, other times you seem to find it plain obnoxious.
Posted by London (Member # 29) on :
Yeah, it depends whether or not I have my finger on my clit at the time.
Posted by Jimmy Big Nuts (Member # 895) on :
viva pinata is quite deceptive though. It's not really lazy fun in the park, and can get quite manic and irritating at times. It's very charming though. Looks lovely. The animals are cute.
Portal is a game you should try, amp. That's got a feminist thing going on. And it's very good.
Posted by London (Member # 29) on :
I'm not sure, I'm generally not too keen on a) the running around behind a gun thing and b) puzzles. Viva Pinata sounds more like it though. What else might be good? (I'm fuck-bored waiting for stupid baby to come out, but my hands are too messed up w/ carpal tunnel to write, so I thought I'd commandeer the babyfather's Xbox.)

I got DOA4 and Viva Pinata this weekend. Might as well kill time till stupid baby comes. DOA was ok, just a fighting game really right? And they're most fun with booze and lots of shouting. Am enjoying Viva Pinata though it's not as good as Animal Crossing but it's not fair to compare every game to AC in manner of one comparing all new boyfriends to perfect ex you dumped in 2002, though of course I do that also. Saw a demo of a game called, erm, Mirror's Edge or something at the shop. It looked absolutely beautiful so I'm thinking that will definitely be worth getting. Anyone else excited by the prospect of it? It sounds pretty cool.

How many Gamer points did you get for that?
I don't think I'm going to bother with the 100% completion one as following a walkthrough to find 200 pigeons sounds incredibly tedious.
I got the One Man Army achievement yesterday which was surpisingly easy as I just nicked a speedboat, captained that to an area i wasn't meant to be in and then just sailed around the map for 5 minutes.
I was quite proud of the one for doing a 500metre whellie.

I got the one man army without even trying. Louise was messing about with a helicopter and inadvertantly got it just through sightseeing.
Still got a few points to mop up. The brucie races, the police car stuff, the stevie texts, the cab ride for 5 points, getting three strikes at bowling and being at 90% friendly with my pals all still need to be done.

*Liberty City Police Face Allegations Of Incompetence, Brutality

In addition, 35,000 vehicles have been reported stolen, many of which were then driven illegally over sidewalks and pedestrian walkways before plunging into the nearby Humboldt River. And according to startling figures released by local community action group Citizens for a Safer City, drug trafficking has become rampant and prostitution has increased by 800 percent.
