Latest from the news wires ...so how do you feel about staging the greatest show on Earth, London folk?
Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :
I'm getting really excited, as it happens. I'll be a bit disappointed if we don't succeed. I really doubt I'll be in London still by 2012, but I think it'll be a real boost for the city, and most likely the whole country. I'm going to be on the edge of my seat until 12.41
Posted by H1ppychick (Member # 529) on :
I really hope we get it even if only to piss Chirac off and make him pay for his illadvised comments at the weekend - it may make him even less inclined to align his stance with the UK and entrenched re the CAP at G8 but since that is likely (99.9999%) to be the case anyway there's no point in a softly-softly approach.

I will be pleased if any UK or Irish city gets the Olympics within my youth(ish). I don't think this should be a chance for Londoners and non-Londoners to sneer at each other's cities; everyone on our little island can jump on a train and within a couple of hours be able to witness some once-in-a-lifetime stuff. By going so close to the wire, London has hopefully boosted the chances of the likes of Birmingham and Manchester's future bids.
I would LOVE to be able watch Olympic standard events in some of my favourite sports: athletics, horsy things and gymnastics, and the opening ceremony would be cool too.
I think London's creaking transport system (even with this mythical new train line) would struggle with the extra influx of people. However, a mate of mine was working in Sydney during their Olympics and said loads of business just shut down or worked flexi hours. This sounds ace!

Yeah I can't believe we're down to the last two. I seem to remember there being a mood of "Don't even know why we're bothering - never had a chance" about a year ago. Now it's between London and Paris. C'mon. C'mon. C'mon.

Ooh tenterhooks. I'm working on a property newspaper that goes to press this afternoon - the first three pages are going to be different depending on whether we get the olympics. Real actual 'hold the front page'!
I think it would be gr9 to get 'em, as long as the people who know what they're doing - designers, transport types, etc - are allowed to get on with it and not suffocated by a millennium committe type wet blanket, a la dome.

If we don't get it then we should pour every penny we were going to spend on fixing London up into training an Olympic team which will win every single gold medal and leave the stinking Frogs to choke on their own (superior, I grant you) food.
We could also divert some of the funds into a special fund for young stand up comedians to come up with a vast number of anti-French taunts which will be broadcast just after the pips on the BBC World Service as a homage to the French Resistance messages off of the War.

Um, despite being the resident gobby northerner with remit for dissing London and wanking on ceaselessly about the excellence of Manchester, I'm chuffed London got the Olympics. Pisses off the French for a start. Just have to hope that London lot talk to the people who did the Commonwealth Games in Manchester seeing as that was the last large scale sporting event hosted in the UK and was stupidly, wonderfully successful.

I hate to tell you but the moaning's already started in Yorkshire. There are some world class sporting facilities in Sheffield of all places, and there are fears that the city just won't see the benefit. Apart from maybe as a training village.
I'm having a wild guess that Cardiff's going to feel the same when Wembley is finally finished and it finds itself being unceremoniously dumped and the FA not returning its calls.

Yes - there's absolutely no chance that hosting the Olympics will actually bring money into the country and provide any kind of economic lift. Not a jot.

The Scots will be livid every time it's mentioned on the news, yes. My brother wanted Paris to get it just to annoy the English. Yes, he is a lamer. But so is any English person who hates the French. The French hate you right back though. I remember one of the stewards outside the Louvre treating me with total disdain when I asked him how exactly you were supposed to get into the actual museum, until he realised I wasn't English but Scottish and proceeded to sneak me past the three-hour-long queues and in through a secret door.

Olympic Timetable:
1. Announcement made - Joyful cheering and overt pride. Red Arrows fly over Uber's office.
2. 3.5 minutes later - How much is it going to cost? I don't like sports anyway. I'm moving house. Hrmph, no more grants for anyone else except East London for the next 18 years then.
3. Three years before Olympics - Building begins. Roadworks, endless dust and drills and cranes everywhere. Major doubts set in.
4. One year before Olympics - Nothing is finished. Tonight with Trevor McDonald (the chap at the beginning for 30 seconds, you know the one) exposes shocking delays and escalating costs.
5. One month before Olympics - Nothing is finished. This will be a complete disaster. Rest of country looks other way and pretends it's nothing to do with London.
6. The Games commence - Everything runs superbly, everyone is happy, plaudits all round, what a triumph for this great city.
7. Two days after the end of the Games - Disastrous Olympic Legacy. Newspapers reveal the ongoing costs of the Olympics and find a local schoolchild who was told he couldn't go for a swim in the Olympic pool, thus proving that the locals aren't even benefitting from the facilities.
8. Six months after the Olympics - What Olympics? Oh yeah, I remember them. Where are they next time anyway?

Lots of places all over the UK hold important sporting events at unique and historic locations- the Grand National in Liverpool, the snooker thing in Sheffield, golf or something in Scotchland, Wimbledon etc. Holding the Olympics in London doesn't denigrate any of these; it's just acknowledging the capacity and infrastructure of our largest city. Manchester did a fine and understated job for the Commonwealth Games, but really, that is a chickenfeed event compared to 2012. The Olympics is a lumbering behemouth that gets more massive each time, and there are realistically very few cities in the world that can accommodate it. I'm not 100% confident that London is totally up to the job, but I'd rather it came here than got given to Birmingham or Sheffield ffs as a charity gesture. IOC Chairman Jacques Rogge: "yes, it was a controversial decision to award the 2012 Games to Rotherham, but you know how touchy these Yorkshire folk are, and they hate the way London gets all the attention. It would definitely be the best thing for Britain to give the Games to some provincial town and watch them fuck it up."
My understanding is that Cardiff's excellent Millennium Stadium was built as a kick-arse sporting venue in its own right, not just as a temporary place while Wembley gets sorted out. I'm sure it's done very well out of renting out to the FA over the last couple of years.

They've been really pissing me off, actually. Nearly all the London ones are all like "Harumph. Council taxes. Blah blah blah." How short sighted is that? With all that construction work, infrastructure work going on it means money being spent on London workers who then go out and spend elsewhere. Plus the regeneration of an area that's currently a bit of a shithole. God! Can't people see past their own Council Tax payment to the bigger picture.
Worst of all is when they go "Oh all my colleagues' council tax will go up", yeah right, you give a fuck about your colleagues: that's just deferring the fact that you're worried *you* might have to pay more, despite the fact that the work being done will mean more money going around.
As for the rest of the UK, it's hardly like it's such a vast Isle that no-one anywhere else is going to notice - contracts aren't just going to be going out to London firms, there's going to be an impact throughout the country. It's like a big club with free money for everyone!

Newcastle and Sunderland. One memorable (and memorably sarcastic) piece on the regional tv news when I was living up in Darlington featured probably the most fanatical (and fanatically Mackem-hating) Newcastle fan in the world.
He refused to have anything red/red-and-white in the house, even to the point of not eating streaky bacon because of its being a queasy visual analogue for the Sunderland team strip.

Best French reaction piece yet...
quote:Charles Bremner, Paris Correspondent of The Times, was in the square opposite the town hall when the news came through:
"I was standing with around 5,000 people, all ready for a party. We were watching the session on two large screens with a French police band dressed in white and standing by, ready to play.
"And then as the moment approached, the sky darkened and a light rain started to fall around a minute before the announcement.
"The news was greeted by silence and disbelief. There was a smattering of booing and some weeping, but most people just started to shuffle away.
"But then the screens cut to London and showed pictures of the celebrations in Trafalgar Square and there was an eruption of booing. At which point the deputy mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, started to speak to the crowd.
"She told the crowd to treat the news in the spirit of fair play and that the process had been fair. And then there was some clapping and the rain started to fall harder and the band started to play a medley of James Bond tunes. It was quite funereal."

Re The Pool. Any football story is always headline news in both Manc and Scouseland. I imagine Beckham's exit was equally hysterically covered, probably with poignant shots of the number 7 shirt hanging in a merchandise shop and interviews with "stunned and betrayed" fans.
In the aftermath of the GLORIOUS RED VICTORY, I read in one of the (respectable) papers about what a shambles the Turkish venue for the final was: stadium in the middle of nowhere, coaches having to drop fans off about a mile away from the gates, a long walk across debris-strewn wasteland, poor printing and poor lighting meaning it was difficult to read information off the tickets, very few ground staff to direct people to their seats etc. The journalist commented that if the Liverpool fans hadn't been so good humoured about the delays and chaos, there may well have been crowd trouble. Good old Liverpool, eh Louche?

Why good old Liverpool? Because they didn't riot at a bit of inconvenience? Surely we shouldn't be commending them for being basically decent? Did anyone commend the Wimbledon crowds for not having a bit of a riot when rain stopped play? I think it's a bit much to say oh well done for being good humoured just because we''re so used to football violence and hooliganism it's almost expected.

I think the implication was that fans from other, lesser teams may have got more impatient more quickly, and created problems for an understaffed and ill equipped venue. But the good old Liverpool fans kept a potentially dodgy situation at bay.
I'd rather see the Wimbledon fans rioting and hooliganising than groaning along politely with Tiger Tim's every fluffed shot, and singing with Cliff Richard. Also, there should be more heckling at snooker matches and crowd chanting at golf games.

At the time of writing there are still some tickets available for the Saturday, Sunday is sold out. Good luck to all who are competing.
I don't think that gives me enough time to practice. Better check out shot putting.
edit: WAIT! There is no video! Crazy lying Americans! What else have they been lying to us about then?

Hmmm, well after some intensive research I don't think that athletics is for me, although this is a good website if you think it could be for you (and according to the site it doesn't matter how old you are!) *
No, I'm pretty sure that synchronised swimming is the one for me, I've been reading all about the gelatine for the hair and the make-up to bring out the features. Plus you get to do this:
Anyone else fancy becoming an Olympic-standard athlete? Dang could do cycling, couldn't he?

Pistol shooting's probably a piece of piss, isn't it? Do that Uber. Wear a stetson and smoke a cheroot. You don't even need to be any good at it. Eddie Edwards with a gun. And tits.

Interestingly, when i went back to a school reunion at that private school, it transpired that one of my old friends had been on the olympic shooting team (I say friend - I'd been out of touch with him for about 7 years, by that point, and this was ten years ago). And - now listen carefully Jonesy, because this bit concerns you - all the kids I remembered as being some of the biggest wankers in the school were taking the piss out of it. Not to his face, mind, cuz he wasn't there. But they were slumping around mocking how 'easy' it would be to get into an Olympic shooting level. They'd all been big sports nits, back in the day and none of them had achieved anything in their respective fields.

Oooh boules! Boules roules. Let's have a TMO boules team, and knock those Frenchies out of the park at their own game. We could celebrate with a Gregg's 'baguette'.

Why not cribbage? I'm fucking evil at Cribbage - or headbanging? Sychronised pogo? Happy slapping?
The olympics should be updated for more trivial pursuits enjoyed by the common man/youth of today.

I just emailed the President of the Federation of Artistic Roller Skating. Or F-ARS as they like to abbreviate. Certainly would be if I joined.

I wonder how Scrawny feels knowing that her boyfriend is an Olympic sport? I imagine lots of women competing for Bandy, Scrawny being the current Bandy-holder, an Olympic sized flirtathon being staged in 2012 at a bar in Soho.
Posted by scrawny (Member # 113) on :
Not great, actually.
I imagine Bandy's probably quite taken wiith the idea of being a trophy. Actually I've just thought of a way to make thi more fun - can there be a men's event too that only beautiful gayers are allowed to enter, with Bandy as the prize? That would be aces.

I don't make the rules Scrawny but the Secretary General is called Mr Rolf Käck if you want to contact them, the email address is: interbandy@rusbandy.ru for the International Federation of Bandy - www.internationalbandy.com Posted by jonesy999 (Member # 5) on :
In light of Thorn's post, I take back what I said about shooting being easy, Uber. When I quite seriously suggested you take up pistol shooting, wear a cowboy hat and smoke a cheroot I hadn't really considered how tricky the sport might be to master, or how difficult it would be to become a famous Olympic loser like Eddie Edwards.
