You're given a fifty pound note. You can't spend it on anything practical, no rent, no savings, no holiday fund. You've got to blow it on yourself.
What do you do with that Jack Lord?

I'd have a scalp massage (gotta love those spine tingles), then buy a kite and try and fly it on the Downs.
Posted by herbs (Member # 101) on :
One of those really harsh massages where the fierce hefty masseuse cracks every bone back into place, some champagne, a meal at the Real Greek, a black cab home, and a damn good seeing to (free). I realise that just the black cab part of that would see off most of the £50, but what the hey. It's Friday.

I'd stick it on Bayern Munich to win tonight. And win £20.
Today is my last day of work.

I would walk to High Street Ken in my lunchbreak and buy something frivolous and overpriced from Urban Outfitters. Or a splurge in the Natural History Museum giftshop; £50 worth of cuddly pumas, dinosaur books and shark stickers would set me up a treat.
Cab fares are a real treat. I'd like to get one from Blackfriars to Croydon tonight, but £50 wouldn't begin to cover it.

A gram of coke that I could take to the party tomorrow night.
Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :
Clingfilm. £50 would buy you a fuckload of clingfilm. Buckets of the stuff.
Or valium. How much valium would youi get for £50? I'm thinking of crushing it and putting it in the office water coolers. I want to watch my workmates drool. Plus, people might stop making me work if I did that.

A bathful of boil-in-the-bag Cod in Butter Sauce (on buy one get one free at Iceland).

I'd go to the local Music Zone surplus CD shop and buy ten of their "£4.97 each" albums which I can never quite justify risking real money on. Like The Best of X-Ray Spex, the most recent Beastie Boys album, Dire Straits' Love Over Gold, something by ELO, Neil Young's On The Beach - you know, all that stuff which doesn't really justify money spent on it but which also doesn't deserve to never, ever be heard but which it's also unlikely anyone else will admit to owning and run off a quick copy for you. That sort of stuff.

If the weather was nice I'd bunk off work, buy some super-soakers from Woolworths and take the Masketeers down to the fountains at Trafalgar Square. If the weather was bad I'd replace my missing copy of Tillyard's Elizabethan World Picture, go to the pub and spend the day reading and getting slowly pissed.

I reckon you're right, but it's been in the shop the last ten times I've been in there and I've never quite picked it up yet. There's a type of band which makes great singles but I can never listen to more than about three of them at a time before switching off (e.g. Blondie, Sex Pistols, The Doors) and I've got a feeling X-Ray Spex would come under that genre. Still, with your fifty quid it's not a problem any more.
Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :
I think Darryn should put the names of everyone who posts on this thread into a hat and pick one out and BM has to send that person £50.
I helped.

Suppose so, but I'm old school see, always loved buying the whole package, however deluded that may be. I mean, I'm not short of a few CDs full of MP3s (got several hundred of them, in fact) but they're usually the entire catalogue of a particular artist rather than random stuff downloaded off of somewhere. I dunno, maybe.
Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :
Actually, he could send us all fifty quid, given that as a renting non home owner he must be fucking minted.
Posted by OJ (Member # 752) on :
£50 should just about cover a new pair of shoes. The two-tone brown spats-style lace ups with the wood stack heel in last Saturday's Grauniad Weekend (very Christian Dior) would do. Except that I've not seen them in the shops yet.
Failing that I reckon I could get two tuition sessions with a Pilates teacher or a personal trainer for £50.
Or a whole lot of Dim Sum on Sunday for me and my other half, with money left over for a film and a cab.
Or I'd pay Louche to find out what she wants with all that cling film. I'm nosey....

I'd pick £50 worth of stuff off my amazon wish list, I reckon. Maybe the Peckinpah stuff.

Dangerman, I can do you an ELO copy if you want, and I may even have some of the other stuff on my Hard Drive of Unexplored Delights (i.e. copies of several friends' music collections that I haven't really bothered rummaging through). If interested, just say the word, I have plenty of blanks.

That's awfully kind of you. Can I offer something in return? I have almost everything that's ever been recorded, apart from a couple of things. I'm at dang65@yahoo.com if you want to take this ex foro.

I would buy red shoes with hearts on to celebrate the fact that my leg is nearly better, I can wear heels again, and I even ran a little bit for the train, admittedly like a limping spazz, but still - RUNNING!!!! Posted by Fionnula the Cooler (Member # 453) on :
I would visit caves.
I would hire an old fishing boat and sail to Fingal's Cave where I would dream of pirates and nineteenth-century composers. I would take a cheap Megabus to the Highland village of Glenfinnan where I would board a steam train and travel to the cave Bonnie Prince Charlie used to hide from the Redcoats. I would perhaps recreate his surreptitious journey through the Highlands. I would steal (my fifty pounds has run out) a skirt and blouse from the washing line of a nearby cottage and disguise myself as a woman before smuggling myself off the mainland by boat to the Isle of Skye where I would spend the evening on a wooded hilltop overlooking a loch sipping expensive whisky from a hipflask and picking thistles.
Or. I would buy an antique record player like Thora Birch's in Ghost World. But that's boring.

If only they'd had CCTV, the Redcoats could have tracked Bonnie Prince Charlie coming out of the station and heading for the cave and we wouldn't have had to put up with The Skye Boat Song. Intrusive and oppressive surveillance technology does have potential benefits, you see.

i would to to teoh's and buy a nice rice paper lampshade, made the red and pink spangly one. then i would get the bus over to rachel's bumminster and try and find some kind of dark wood bookshelf so that all my lovely sexy books can stop hiding their light in the bushel of a heineken cardboard box under my telly table. *then i would buy myself a copy of macafee NoMoreMixedMetaphors 2004 and dowenload it forthwith.* also, i am scouting for a meat locker like my sister's, she says there are loads of them about but im all like, where do you hang out that there are 1950's meat lockers mooching about unloved and unwanted? meat locker world? if the lampshade and the bookshelf came to say, eight and thrity nicker that would still leave me enough for a pieminister heidi pie, mash and minted peas, some jaffa cakes and a bottle of something red and mellow.

Posted by Uber Trick (Member # 456) on :
With my £50 I would spend £10 in Primark, £10 on ebay, £10 in a charity shop and £20 on food and wine. OR if it was sunny then I would spend it all on a day out at the seaside with my lover. OR I would buy a magic mushroom grow-kit and then at harvest time recreate the Kew Garden birthday mushroom trip extravaganza
I can't decide which one I want to do most Posted by Waynster (Member # 56) on :
I think I would hire a cleaner to take care of the flat's cleanlines so I don't have to for the impending hoards that are decending upon my abode Snday for our annual Fantasy Football Draft.
Oh and buy Darryn a couple of pints (any chance you can shake out of it m9?)

Cor - I actually did get given £50 yesterday! In exchange for volunteering my arm for medical science, so I guess it wasnt really free. I already spent it though on tickets to see a show thing with Ricky Gervais, Mark Thomas, Bill Baily, Robert Newman and Ed Byrne. Then I spent it again on dinner and beer.
If I had another £50 I would get some new shoes because mine have holes in and leak. In fact does anyone know if there are still any Buffalo shoe shops left anywhere? I want some of the trainers below, but in the green camo print with red flames style. Chiz.

i am trying to find a picture of a meat locker but google is being a spazmaloid. it is a little chest on legs, where the walls are like metal mesh, and you put your meat in it with ice so the flies could not get to it. the one my sister has is very groovy and looks like many of the reclaimed industrial items in my wanky 'how to decorate your house if you are a pathetic bottom feeding povvo!' book. which as it happens is actually full of architect designed apartments in utrecht and north west london where a woman called tabitha has found a darling little fishermans lamp at a boot sale in whitstable, painted it aqua blue or candy pink, filled it with seashells and light emitting diodes and strung it nonchalantly from a piece of twine in the bathroom so it provides a mellow light for reading 'wallpaper' in your freestanding victorian bath.
but anyway. the meat locker. is nice. i will not be painting mine aqua blue or candy pink.

I'd bet it with stanjames.com on a variety of football matches and specials. Having recently found myself on the winning side of gambling £70 up! Maybe this money would then be frittered away, teaching me a lesson that eventually my lucky shrewd decisions will run out but in the process I won't have really lost anything. Actually, I'd probably just stick it in the bank the way my finances are now. If I don't get this medival. -volutneer notes in 30 mins!- I'm in a spot of bother.
