For reasons far too wanky to tell you, I am looking to buy (if not too expensive) a metro / underground / subway / tube door. Yes, really.
Unsurprisingly they're not being flogged on ebay and a quick google throws up a bunch of estate agents for some reason.
Where do trains go to die? Is it possible to buy such a thing? Any ideas???

A scrapyard would be your best bet, I would have thought. While you're there, you could stage some impromptu performance art themed around consumerism and waste.
Posted by vikram (Member # 98) on :
they should do that. make it a tv show. scrapheap challenge for guardian readers. michael landy could host.

stop it! my mind is spinning like a tassle.
so a scrapyard eh? when i have time, i shall call tfl or whatever and ask them bout it.
Posted by Dr. Benway (Member # 20) on :
that should give them a laugh.
Posted by vikram (Member # 98) on :
I'm beginning to reconsider this.
Posted by Dr. Benway (Member # 20) on :
no, you should do it, and if they take the piss, just slag them off in Vice magazine or something.

Don't get picked on by these bullies Vikram-san, scrapyards are the best, there's one for rail stuff near Purley. I currently attempting to convert one of these into a shower unit. Not everything has to come from IKEA.

... I like the superman idea ...
I wouldn't mind getting hold of one of those Dr Who boxes either, if I could find some tenuous excuse for making it useful.

vikram, would it bother you if this train was in service when it had its door ripped off?
Posted by vikram (Member # 98) on :
dude, it's art.
(and i'm not gonna nick the door, but if i did, the train wouldn't be in service instead it's be rusting away which makes it fair game.)
Posted by vikram (Member # 98) on :
and anyway, i want.

Vikram, re your original request this is one of the main rail vehicle overhaul and maintenance plants in the UK.
It's a subsidiary of an American corporation, hence the paucity of info on the website, but you could phone them and ask whether they can sell you carriage-part scrap.
It's where trains go to get spruced up, repaired, overhaulted, given facelifts etc.
Don't ever say I'm not a mine of weird information.
