In the spirit of Friday, what's giving you a little surge of niceness at the moment? Can be anything at all: letching over office totty, weekend plans, wearing new underwear, whatever you like.

Positively Fabulous
Eating a scrumptious piece of shortbread from a tin that was brought to work as a leaving gift by a not-so-sadly departed colleague, and sipping the cup of tea that was just bought for me and brought to my desk. Knowing that my boss is going to give me a bottle of champagne at lunchtime for a recent successful project and that my efforts were noted and that I'm well regarded. Idly considering the haircut I will get tomorrow, and the cheesy theatre night out that I'll be going on to. Remembering that my friend is cooking me Sunday lunch.

Zyban. I am taking the anti-smoking medication and it is speeeedy. My sleep needs have retreated to 4 hours per night, and my typing speed has accellerated past its usual 75 wpm into some kind of hyperwarp buzzhole, which is fun.

I'm feeling chipper this morning, which makes me realise how long it is since I felt like this. It's gr9.

Things making me happy:
Seeing dearest pals this evening for birthday party
Hosting lunch tomorrow for funny people. The meal will involve eating the quince jelly I made. Myself. From quinces in the garden. Surely I am Nigella Lawson.
The fact that I seem to be much more ahead with work than I thought.
The fact that I don't live in East Manchester, where I went yesterday.

The fact that sometimes you learn things that you didn't think would be true.

This morning a chapter of the book I am reading (Rally Round the Flag, Boys! by Max Shulman) involved a group of advertising executives who are trying to come up with a way to tie in a breakfast cereal sponsorship deal with a TV show.

They start spouting the sort of wankspeak that I thought was very recent in creation - things like 'blue-sky it', 'hoist it up the flagpole and see who salutes', all those expressions.

But! The book was published in 1959.

Okay, so not a happie as such, but still.

I know a happie - a photo I've just seen of London and Uber as kids. That's just great, that is.

Happies:

Going shopping at one of Holland's largest camera stores this afternoon and trying not to spend too much money.

Weekend playing with camera - hoping (but not confident) of sunny Saturday and getting up early for dawn shots.

Drinks probably at some point (D-B&W L8r?) putting paid to not getting up early for aforemention dawn shots.

My current happie would probably be starting to enjoy a bit of current music again. I don't know why because it hasn't changed much recently and isn't particularly original, but there's been some kind of subtle change that is actually making me look at the "Now Playing" text on the radio when songs are playing.

Like they just played The Holloways song Generator...

I can get a record player, and a generator,
generate the music that makes you feel better

...which is just a daft, inspiringly chirpy little track.

Now they're playing Like A Pen by The Knife which is sort of electronica pop. I like the recent Beck singles as well, what was it? Oh Yeah I think and Cellphone's Dead or something. I nearly bought the new album the other day but couldn't see Oh yeah on the tracklist, unless it's called something else?

So, yeah, maybe it's just me but I'm hearing a freshness around the place all of a sudden.

Edit:
Generator video
Like A Pen video
Hell Yes video (not Oh Yeah. Duh.)
Cellphone's Dead video

Hey, videos are getting good as well. Or at least not getting worse.

yeah same here dang! i think it might just be the time of year but i have actually been able to listen to radio one for more than ten minutes without thinking about that line in that book by the man who wrote about things that dont exist any more* where he says that yes, modern music is crap but not as crap as going on about how crap modern music is.

*putting the italicsed words into google brought up no results. if someone could remind my poor addled brain what this book is and who its by, that would be ace! it came out last year.

other than that- the possibility of moving into a house owned by a woman who has spent the last 20 years collecting 1950s kitsch. its only a possibility, but theres a bar shaped like a boat in the living room and the fridge is pink. IVE GOT TO MAKE THIS POSSIBILITY A REALITY! I MUST WORK TOWARDS THIS END WITH ALL MY MIGHT.

Edit2: and after 102 votes, my photo on Hot or Not has now garnered a rating of 8.3. My brother's photo, which he posted on there to challenge me, has achieved a rating of fucking 7! That'll learn 'im.

I'm glad you asked Abby, because I thought at the time of writing that it would need more explaining and that anyone who even gives a flying fuck would ask, so it pleases me for it to be you. Well. You've waited long enough and so the here is your explanation. Are you ready? It's a hamper that the company gives you after working here for five years.

In other news, I offered to cook dinner for my team and everyone refused the offer. I don't know why I bother.

Depends really. If it's a specific range of hamper that she's referring to, the manufacturers sometimes offer a five year guarantee on the hamper. Taken from 'Optima's' website:

quote:
The quality of these products is such that they carry a 5 year guarantee. Optima have been producing luxury English fitted picnic hampers for over 60 years combining the finest ceramics and accessories and presenting them in high quality, hand-woven willow hampers.

I did. But TMO once again has provided us with the knowledge. Imagine how useful that will be when your wife is sobbing because a burst pipe ruined her christmas hamper. You could say 'well actually Honey, turn that mother fucking frown upside down, because Zygote from TMO said our Optima hamper is guaranteed for up to five years' and she will stop crying and ask 'who's Zygote?' as she hurriedly scribbles her signature onto the divorce papers.

[Mad]

I've just had a happy-making shopping trip, despite being in the heart of nappy valley. I went to a proper fishmonger, with a man scattering ice over shiny sea-smelling fish, then a marvo cheese shop - inspiration for my future career - to buy some machego. Then a pastrami and cheese and gherkin baguette from a market stall. A wicker basket would have completed my idyll.

I remember a particularly bleak christmas my dad brought us around a hamper, which was a really nice gesture. It lost the appeal a bit by filling it full of Lidl tinned food like russian sardines in redcurrant jelly and pickled lemons. It wouldn't have felt so much like a red cross food parcel if he hadn't driven past the house and got his wife to hurl it out of the back of the boot.

They do this at the start of 'Twelve Angry Men' (Henry Fonda, cross). The angry man who just wants to get back to work and god damn the defendant all to hell is shown to be impatient because he says something about flag poles and ideas. Or it's not him, it's the weak one who goes along with everyone else. The creative (read: queer). Either way, not only did they have wankspeak back then, but they also considered it wank.

My weekend was good, involving lots of socialising. Three lots of people in three days! At my age! Not a moment's gardening! It did however involve slightly too many cute one-year-olds with blond hair for my liking.

Now back at work, tension building in shoulders. Partly due to chair/desk height problems; partly due to unrealistic workload; partly due to having to choose an underling. Does one go on personality or experience? Is drawing straws an acceptable recruitment method?

I had an ok weekend. went to borough market on saturday, was overwhelmed by the number of ***** taking photos. The stall owners should just lay all their stuff out and put it behind a curtain, and then charge people to look under the curtain and take photos. Nobody seemed to be buying anything, just earnestly snapping away at dead game and gutted fish, presumably for their blogs and flickr profiles. I bought mussels and steamed them in shallots, garlic and wine, then served them with cream, parsley, and fetuccini. Put in slightly too much wine, but it was still edible.

By way of out-Baudrillarding Jimmy Big-Nuts, I've noticed that an increasing number of businesses seem to call themselves by the name of their website - there's one in Boroughbridge, for heaven's sake, called something like "www.classic-autos.co.uk" - as though the bricks-and-mortar building you see before you is actually a mere adjunct of a more authentic entity that exists in cyberspace.

Maybe it's a fair point: perhaps it's time we realised that businesses are actually sinister, Lovecraftian beings that have managed to bridge a spectral chasm between the dimensions.

Yes! I wanted to buy fish, but due to the scrum of photofiends around a monkfish spread over a log I couldn't get close. There were also some embarrassing performers clogging up the way, singing badly in an oldee stylee.

We were there at the same time. I saw that monkfish too. And those stupid performers. What a bunch of cocks. They may as well have set up shop in the middle of Borough Road for all the horrible congenstion they were causing.

I was only in that neck of the woods because I'd left my card behind the bar in a pub near Borough the previous evening, so the whole excursion was already tinged with bitterness and failure before I even got to the market.

Did you get anything in the end?

I spent all yesterday being taught excellent stuff about Avid (posh off-line editing software). I have two more days of it. And work is paying!

Educational fun! Hooray!

Let me know how you make out with Zyban. I've been considering trying it but I fear drugs.

Zyban sounds like a masked avenger.

Can you actually give up drink again? If you had given it up last time then you wouldn't be doing it now.

I know. I know. Pointless drivel. Don't bother to tell me to shut up, I am going away now.

I'm on it! It's fine. I mean, I couldn't sleep at first but I've got used to it now. And I totally don't want to smoke. It's so cool. You know how normally, you want to smoke, it feels like there's this emptiness inside that can only be filled up by inhaling on a cigarette? For some reason Zyban makes you feel like that bit is already filled up. Cigarettes just don't interest you. And you still get to smoke for the first week as well, and for some reason, it makes the cigarettes taste wierd. Hurrah for Zyban!

Have you noticed any personality change since you started taking it, or have you always been this way?

What way? No, everything is exactly the same.

eta - actually, the end of the first week / beginning of the second was a bit rough, because zyban's a bit speedy, and i was not sleeping much. as soon as you wake up your mind goes AWAKE AWAKE!!!!! and that's it. you're awake. but your body adjusts to that really quickly - i've started sleeping again now, and i'm half-way through the 2nd week.

lol. I didn't mean that way in a bad way. You're just...you know.

Have you smoked since starting? I don't like the speedy aspect, but if I can adjust quickly it would be worth it to not be killing myself slowly anymore.

Just... what? Immensely compelling?

You smoke throughout the first week, and then on day 7, you stop. That was last Friday. I haven't smoked since then. I haven't even wanted to, AT ALL. And my sister, who was like massive granny-ash addicted smoker, much worse than me, she's been given up for like a month now and I think she was only tempted once - and she resisted. And even if she hadn't it would have tasted minging anyway, so, urgh. You're on it for 2 months and at the end of that time, when you come off it, you'd have to be stupid to want to start again, surely.

Is Zyban an over the counter remedy or a doctors note ?

I'm happy, I sould get my first pay packet in almost two years later on today ! Go me !

Off to Ikea to buy a new dining table on special offer.

(From 299 Euro to 99 for one week)

Yeah, sure. Immensely compelling. [Roll Eyes]

Ah, so Zyban might not be the wonder drug I had hoped for. I need something that not only reduces the urge to smoke, but also makes me not stupid. The last time I quit I was smoke free for almost six months. But then I got a case of the stupids and thought I could just have one every now and then. Ha! Back to a pack a day in the blink of an eye. [Frown]

I was off smoking for 4 months solid. Just gave up. Paf. Just like that. Stress rising. Work is difficult. What's one cigarette going to do. Lead to me to a slippery slope. Now I smoke again. I need to get off of it. I actually don't like smoking. Hate it. It stinks. Burns your shit. Makes a smell. Deadly. Fucking gay peer pressure.

Yeah. My sister says she has to act like she's a recovering alcoholic and can't allow herself one tiny drag or that's it. Surely if you gave up booze you can give up fags?

Posted by Darryn.R (Member # 1) on :

Yeah, I know that feeling Ralph.

You would think. But booze was easy compared to smoking. I smoke all day long, whereas when I drank, I tried to keep it to non-working hours only. Nicotene is supposed to be as addictive as heroin, so kudos to anyone who's ever stopped.

I stopped. Just went cold turkey one day. It helped that it was just gone midnight on 01/01/00 and that I was in Rome, and threw my cigarettes and lighter in a bin whilst walking back to the apartment. I don't know why it stuck, though.

I don't really smoke when I'm not drinking, and even then, I don't smoke much at home.

Posted by H1ppychick (Member # 529) on :

There was definitely a drinking correlation for me when I smoked and that was what escalated my smoking to probably 20 a day anyway - I was stuck on a dead end project job in Birmingham and staying in a central Brum hotel with a large crowd of other project people. For nine months. We escaped to the loos at work during the day to smoke because the job was so shit and we went out every night because we were on expenses.

I found stopping smoking whilst drinking the hardest, but I don't get the urge anymore. The one context in which I cannot resist a cigarette is when I'm looking at porn. I don't know quite what it is, but I'll just see a pic of some chick bending over in white knickers and it's like 'bang!' I'm gasping for a cigarette. So strange. It's only soft porn that triggers it, too.
