We know London is the greatest city on earth, so why doesn't it have an anthem?

After all, 'Ole Blue Eyes sang that New York New York was so good, they named it twice! And Tony Bennett famously left his heart in San Francisco. We could go on...

They should really stop there, because neither of those songs are anything remotely like "anthems". By that token ~ a song having the city in the title ~ there are already loads of London anthems.

And it isn't very hard to start listing them.

"A Foggy Day in London Town" by George and Ira Gershwin
"A London Sumting" by Tek 9
"Dark Streets of London" by The Pogues
"Down to London" by Joe Jackson
"First Night Back in London" by The Clash
"Get out of London" by Interferon
"Get Outta London" by Aztec Camera
"Girl from London" by Blue Cheer

etc etc

"Greetings from Shitsville NW3" - The Wildhearts
"Down on London" - The Wildhearts (again)
"Streets of London" - Anti Nowhere League

Yep - not much in the way of anything celebratory really

That's a good point ~ maybe they mean positive songs celebrating London, and maybe none of the songs about the city so far do that. Maybe there's a reason for that. I don't feel very loyal to London anymore. I am fucking off to Surrey this summer.

Well, there's one song which immediately springs to mind which totally captures London and that's Waterloo Sunset.

I'll have a little think about ones that don't immediately spring to mind though.

"London's Brilliant", written by Elvis Costello for Wendy James, is quite good. (That doesn't really sound a rousing recommendation for a metropolitan anthem, I know.) "London's Brilliant Parade" by Costello is also worth thinking about. It namechecks the Routemaster, anyway.
