Picture the scene. You're at a student disco, or an indie nightclub. You're chatting to your friends, when suddenly THAT SONG comes on... you know the one, the one you fucking LOVE, the one you HAVE to dance to, lose yourself in. But what is it? What's playing?

I'm thinking:

What are *YOU* thinking? What's *YOUR* student indie disco classic?

Enquiring minds want to know.

I would have to add:

Not very Indy per se, but I kind of get the feeling with some of the input they could be included in the parameters given.

The Slits should get a lot more kudos than they do really. They were like The Sugarcubes a decade early - really similar vocals to Bjork sometimes - and they were a girl band at a time when that was still purely a novelty, but they did some classy stuff. I suppose they're another of those 1978-1982 sort of era bands when there was so much good stuff around that a lot of it was never properly appreciated.

So, anyway, since no one's mentioned The Sugarcubes yet, nor are likely to probably, I'd pick something off Life's Too Good which I'm just listening to trying to choose which track but I've only got it on cassette so I can't skip through and make a snap CD-era decision.

A waste of your time, since that would presuppose that there was a track on there that was somehow less than brilliant. London can just stick the whole CD on and go shmooze with her fellow media slebs for 40 mins.

Mind you, she's probably going to do that with the CSS album.

Have we had any Echobelly yet? I Can't Imagine The World Without Me anyone?

I wasn't answering your question - I was posting further tracks that could be played. Your request was posted as I was, hmm... about halfway through typing my post.

Black Mask: I've been to many indie nights and I've heard each of those tracks I listed at most of them. The "kids today" do actually like music that was produced in the 50s/60s/70s. Therefore, it doesn't suprise me a great deal to hear them played over the course of a decent (studenty) indie night.

Late to the party. but here's some songs we danced to back in the day:

Beers, Steers and Queers - Revolting Cocks (we had a little dance that went with it...the entire club did it...very amusing)

A bunch of songs by The Lords of Acid that I can't think of right now.

Pretty much any song by The Cure, seeing as how we were(still?) all Cure freaks.

Blister in the Sun- Violent Femmes (and the part where he sings stop to check you out, the enitre club sang "Stop to eat you out". We had so much class as teens).

A Daisy Chain for Satan and The Days of Swine and Roses - My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult

Anything by New Order (I've been listening to them nonstop recently...reliving my youth perhaps?)

Love will tear us apart - Joy Division

Part of me - Tool

The Stone Roses
Blur
Oasis
Charlatans UK
The Ocean Blue
The Pixies
Beastie Boys

Thieves - Ministry

Kill Your Television - Neds Atomic Dustbin (may God have mercy on my soul for remembering that...)
Television, The Drug Of The Nation - Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy

this is one of my favourite songs to dance to ever. But only if they play the album version which has the extended ambient part with the big 808 sounds, massive guitar reverbs and Kerstin Haigh singing yeeeeeeaaaaaaaayaaaayaaaaaaaay - because that's the bit that makes the hairs go *prong* on the back of my neck.

Also: I have that Little Chris song in my head and need to get it out - anyone have any tips? You know, it's a fairly creditable effort for what it is, I just don't want it knocking around the inside of my skull all day.

How could we have forgotten this awesome twosome?

But what do I play after these two? Or should that just be the end of the set (quite possibly). What do you think?

Posted by not... (Member # 25) on :

Sounds like a good ending to me. I was trying to think what that blur song was called about half way through the thread but I could only remember "13" which is the album I think.

Indie bangers were wonderful. My co-dj Ubertrick is truly a genius on the decks (well, laptop and iPod.) We are a fun team I think. Everyone was dancing, the whole club! We dumped the whole indie bangers thing pretty quickly though, substituting it instead with a flawless blend of electropop, girlpop, and current tweepop hits (they nearly died when we followed Camera Obscura's 'Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken' with The Pipettes' 'School Uniform' and The Primitives' 'Crash' [which, along with Ash's 'Girl From Mars', was one of the few indie bangers which made it through]). Things ended with a segue from The Knife's 'We Share Our Mother's Health' into Brazilian awesomeness from Bonde do Role (Ma΄quina de Ricota), climaxing with, of course, CSS's 'Let's Make Love'. It was amazing! People were whooping, and punching the air. We have definitely not made people whoop before, ever! It was awesome. I believe we now have some kind of residency so you Londoners should come check out the awesomeness next time.

Also, it looks as though my sister is due to be joining my band! We will be the Kim and Kelly Deal of shimmering girly tweepop, though with less heroin, perhaps.

[Cool]

I did think about going, but in the end I thought that the whole thing might have been a bit overwhelming. I thought that there might be people there who would give me shit, or at least, patronise me because I'm not into the music scene, and I don't know loads of cool young people. Also, increasingly, I find that if I 'go out' I end up doing or saying something in my inebriation that will come back to haunt or trouble me. If there is some event and I don't go, I wake up the next morning feeling ok, safe in the knowledge that I haven't debased or humiliated myself like a drunken lunatic. Not all events, of course, but I felt that the one on saturday would have potentially quite a few people there who are suspicious of me or don't like me, and the chances of incidents would have been high. You've mentioned at least one of these people already.

The last time I went to one of these things with lots of sceney people, it ended up with louise getting burned by a cigarette from a crazy woman, me having a go at somebody I'd never met before, and then later being told I'm an idiot in front of a room full of people. At around 7 am, I was spraypainting things on walls around finsbury park in a kind of alcoholic waking coma. It takes weeks to get over the shock, shame, and physical trauma of that kind of thing.

Well, Lupe Fiasco wasn't brilliant. Doors opened at 7, he didn't show up until gone half nine with no support. So, by the time he was on stage covering Kanye West tunes, I was drunk as fuck. Still, I think I danced a bit, did some hollering, thrust my spiky hands in front of me like I was trying to flick shit from my fingers. Then, later, there was some kind of event with some teenagers. I was maybe trying to get them to come drinking. Can't remember. Anyway, today I feel quite rough. Still pissed.

So, Lupe might have been ok once he came on, but I felt like I'd had the piss taken out of me by then. A fellow called Tom told me that he was doing something for TV, which is why he was late. But for fourteen quid, that's not cool, Lupe.

Things that I don't think have been mentioned but should've been:

Veruca Salt - All Hail Me

every Longpigs song ever

most Super Furry Animals songs, especially The Man Don't Give A Fuck, Guacamole and Wherever I Lay my Phone

Heavy Stereo - Sleep Freak

Powder - Afrodisiac (btw I agree with Vikram that they were v good live)

Plus two of my favourite covers of all time, China Drum - Wuthering Heights
Fountains of Wayne - Baby one more time

Luckily Pink is away tonight so I can now play all the indie I want, as loud as I like. [Smile]
