The swing is 'interesting'. I don't know what that means, but my brother is a politico (worked for various MPs. Sacked by most of them, but there you go..) and that is what he says.
Paxman is being Paxman. One day he will sneer himself to death.

More talking at the moment. I suppose I should tell you all how I voted, you know, make it personal.
I went for Lib Dem. I have voted Labour all of my life but this time...I just can't do it. It's the handling of Iraq, ID cards, tuition fees and Geoff Hoon.
Oh, and David Kelly.
And my brother being sacked.

The catchphrase of the night amongst my friends who are with me is 'Well alright', said in Welsh accent. It's a tribute to Neil Kinnock's notorious sheffield rally in '92.
Some place in Scotland is returning. Labour again.
Score so far is Labour 4, Cons and Libs 0.

I'm not holding my breath at the moment, I want to see some of the marginal results coming in - see if the Lab to Lib swing is as prevalent and what that does to the Tory seats.
I'm feeling all prickly and excited.

If it's not a too personal question, how did you vote?
Posted by Meg (Member # 444) on :
I sent a wayward mark in the direction of the Greens. I think tactical voting is dangerous - it gets in the way of the issues and is misleading. The Lib Dems and Tories are going to walk away from tonight thinking that people love their policies, but in truth, it's just people 'sending a message' to TB. This pisses me off greatly.
We need someone to have the balls to take on electoral reform.

I read Galloway's book 'Not the only one', and I wasn't impressed. His wife (girlfriend?) was in the Times on Sunday saying that she's dumping him for his womanising. I would have thought she would dump him for having an affair with himself.

I agree with you there. I find the whole Party Politics thing too black and white. Proportional (mong spelling) makes sense to me.
A nine percent swing. My brother said 'Fucking hell' so I'm assuming it is important.

Issues, like I said before.
Ok, so they aren't too good at putting forward a short, digestible manifesto, but their overall approach is far better. I'd quite like to see more decisions being made that takes in social and environmental concerns and not just economic ones. No major party is doing that in any real way.

Yes, I did. The percentage increase for the lib dems was higher than that of the conservatives, and yet they managed to nose in with a fairly marginal majority of just 1500 odd in MK North. Unfortunately MK South is still labour and as such, still under Phyllis Starkey, who seems hell bent on approving any plans put forward by English Partnerships to turn MK (city of the future) into a vast sprawling housing estate.

No offence, but that's pretty much how it appeared during my Geography Field Trip in the early 90s.
Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :
New plans seem to be doing away with the modern grid road system, and expansion plans feature more of a conventional 'traffic jam and congestion' type road layout.
Perhaps if you'd paid a little more attention in your Geography classes you might have understood why exactly you were looking at Milton Keynes at all.

Hmm... I seem to remember we had to count the number and age of the cars on peoples' driveways. I think we had to assess which of the four "zones" we visited was the most affluent.
The highlight of the trip was when the teacher read the class clown's form out loud on the coach home:
You came all the way to MK just to look at numberplates? Where did you go to school, Spackington Elementary?

Nice work, Roy - I would have contributed, but I was away at a wedding from Thursday lunchtime.
Anyway, I'm fairly pleased with how things panned out: even though all the Lib Dem campaign literature informed us that 'a vote for Labour is a wasted vote' in my constituency, I went ahead and helped increase the Labour share in Harrogate by just over 1% while the Lib Dem share went up by only 0.7% (Tory share dropped by 2.7%).
