Looks like this is the start of a global recession then. Or something. I don’t know. I’ve got a big loan with Northern Rock and I’m not really totally sure what any of this means. Apparently I should just keep making payments and if it all goes tits up then someone might buy the debt or something.

Meh. Are we really all fucked then or is this just a hiccup?

Posted by New Way Of Decay (Member # 106) on :

Aren't you one of the lucky ones if you have a loan, not savings with them?

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

Yeah I think so, but only if they go totally bust. Then maybe I might be in a possition to cash in on other people's misery. But actually I think it would just be a case of paying someone else instead, I doubt it's anything worth getting too hopeful about.

I wish I was one of those clever money people who knew how to exploit situations like this to my advantage. I'm sure there's some scope here for getting rid of some of my debt.

Thing is though it's not just Northern Rock. I bank with Barclays and on their login page they show the current share price. About 3 months ago that share price was hovering fairly stable at around £7.30. It's now down to about £5.75 after the whole sub-prime debacle, but rather than start to level out or pick up again, it's still dropping appreciably.

It's just not a good sign.

Posted by New Way Of Decay (Member # 106) on :

Maybe we'll get our wish and the economy will collapse at just the right time for a zombie plague. So not only will you enter the apocalypse debt-free, you'll be able to impale a zombies head on your free pen and slap him repeatedly in his mush with a cheque book.

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

It seems crazy but thinking about being suddenly debt free is like some kind of wonderful dream. like winning the lottery or something. i could jack my job in and actually go to university to study motorsports technology. That would be incredible.

Having a few zombies to smack around would be the icing on the cake, of course.

Just out of curiosity, is your money in the back secured?

The reason I ask is because our banks in America have FDIC insurance which basically means if the bank goes tits up, your money (up to $125,000) is guaranteed.

Seeing people queue the last 3 days to withdraw their money from Northern Rock suggests to me that there is no such insurance?

Also, doesn't it make sense that if the bank was in trouble and needed a loan from the Bank of England to stay solvent... Going in and removing all the money in its reserves is pretty much the nail in the coffin?

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

There is, I forget what it's called but it's essentially the same sort of scheme. But if the company were actually insolvent, it'd be a hell of a lot less fucking about if you can take your cash while funds still exist, than wait till you have to go through the legal process of claiming etc. Plus people are sheep and a picture of a few idiots withdrawing their savings in a panic is generally enough to cause the kind of queing round the street we're seeing now. Because basically people don't really understand the ins and outs of this kind of situation and operate a 'better safe than sorry' policy.

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

People should be more understanding with banks. They should be patient and considerate and give banks the benefit of the doubt.

Poor old banks...

This is... sarcasm?

I'm fairly sure that, like everything else shitty in the world, America is largely to blame.

I thought it was unbridled greed... same thing, I suppose.

Have a read of this if you like.

Basically Northern Rock borrows money from the markets (rather than savings deposits) to lend out to people like Ringo. The money available in the market was running a bit short or was expensive to acquire because of sub-prime, so NR went to the BoE to make sure it had a line of credit available in case it needed to borrow any more in order to lend it on/support its current lending. It hasn't used it, so far.

The panic savings withdrawal might mean that NR has to go looking for alternative sources of money to sustain its current lending (although its customer deposits are a relatively small source of such funds) - this might be the market or might be the BoE facility.

Its ability to borrow in the market is governed by market confidence and NR's credit rating, and the more that people take out their money and the share price falls as people sell their shares in NR, the worse its credit rating becomes and the more likely it'd actually have to use the facility that it only really asked for in the first place in case of emergencies.

Upshot is - the bank won't fall over, but it's likely to get taken over and might have to put its rates up.

The guarantee thing covers up to £35k of savings: £2k in full then 90% of the next £33k.

How about a TMO bank?

TeeMO International, or something. It could be a shady front for, er, something else that we do, like diamond construction or arms mining or heroin consumption or something. We would all own shares and would trade them with each other, like Panini football stickers or Monopoly properties.

Darryn and Femke would keep all our money, in real notes, in their kitchen, in a bi teapot. Chair of the board would be, say, Octavia, or Elvis. Or me. Or someone else. Or we could rotate. Get dizzy. Zygote would obviously be our market trader. Jonesy would write our promotional material, power-managed by Scrawny. Herbs would be the pretty girl at the counter, while ralph would be the young trainee who has to fill the cash machine up ("it's like a photocopier, only the paper's worth a lot more!") and do all the filing.

RickJ would run the Swiss side of it all. Bit dodgy. Best not to ask.

Vikram would be the bank's image person, like that guy for the Halifax. Only swanky and shagging slebs and stuff.

And, er, other people would do other things, and it would be really funny, sort of, only, y'know, not, coz it's a stupid idea that's just rehashing loads of other wank conceptual TMOniverses that we've all thought up before and flogged to death.

So. Let's not, then.

It's because you're over there and not used to the bombardment of jealousy...

I live in the thick of it... Surrounded by "America is evil" but if you listen carefully, what they are really saying is, "God, we're shit, I wish we were like America".

A theory supported by the amount of American telly, autos, refrigerators, clothes, starbucks, mcdonalds, vocabulary, guns, etc that the Brits have adopted.

Jealousy man, jealousy.

I'd like a teapot.

I was at my staff induction day on Friday and the chaplaincy had a stand with teapots which had 'more tea vicar?' written on the side. I wanted one of those. But not enough to get religious for.

I think, Ralph, without wishing to further your frustration, that this is a little bit the US' fault. Quite a little bit. Sorry and all.

I was watching our girls earlier, putting six past the Argies, etc., and I had a mug of tea and I felt horribly like a Sun reader.

Has anybody else felt lower class recently? Ugh. Fortunately we can all rest easy on the Internet. I'm thinking of getting some t-shirts made up with 'I heart the digital divide'. Can I put you all down for one?

The boiler is currently being fixed at my office, so it's fucking freezing. I'm drinking a coffee per hour, and making regular visits to the toilet to run my pulse points under the hot tap, in a vein attempt to keep warm.

You bought it then? Sweet

I've been walking home from work recently, wheeling my bike alongside me rather than riding it. Why would I do this? Because over a set distance walking burns over twice the amount of calories cycling does. And if you keep a decent pace (over 4mph) it is better for improving cardiovascular fitness too. Makes your feet a bit hurty, mind.

I spent this weekend at a stockbrokers country home (swimming pool, hunting/shooting related artwork, lots of taxidermy) with a group of young men who went to boarding schools and talked knowledgably about this banking kerfuffle.
Had my friends been there they would have wrestled a stuffed bear into the pool and taken off on the sit-and-ride lawn mower.

I felt pretty working class then.

I once spent a weekend like that with friends of a girlfriend, I could feel the righteous class-hatred bubbling in my gut, until I was told to help myself to the contents of the host's 'cellar'. I felt alright about the whole scene, then.

I would become even more abusive and disagreeable than normal if I had to participate in that weekend. I'd adopt a soft mocking tone early on in the proceedings, smirking at everything around and me and looking quizzical whenever somebody spoke to me. As if everything they said was ridiculous. Then after a few beers, I'd end up making out like I'm some kind of George Orwell character, experiencing the exotic truth of life in a state of utter destitution. Even though, I'm not, obviously. I'd make it clear that the more money you have, the less you get out of life. I'd end up speaking in the laziest of estuary accents, swearing constantly, being incredibly crude, yet pulling up anybody who might be veering into racism or sexism, because in my tiny malnourished mind, these things are synonymous with private schools and poshness. I'd be a full blown socialist worker within hours of my first beer. Perhaps believing myself to be a more hardcore version of Mark Thomas, I'd go deeper and deeper into issues of morality and class in order to try and make these people feel the guilt and shame that I wish to push upon them. But my desperate attempts to punish them by presenting myself as a working class messiah would end turning me into a confused, angry, self hating mess. I'd finish up the night crying by the swimming pool and texting Louise, telling her sorry for being such a failure. I'd end up drowning, but only in my own self pity.

Unless somebody had some coke, in which case, I'd do the same thing, only I wouldn't start crying until two days later, when the horrible reality of the evening would come crashing home after reading a facebook comment.

I'll field this one. I've driven a ragtop of one variety or another for about 15 years of my driving career. The feeling is undescribable, but if I was to try I'd say that it is one of complete freedom and utter joy. Right up until the moment you slam into a highway barrier doing 125mph because you're totally stoned on lebanese blonde hash and don't think life is really worth living anymore.

See, most people dream of doing that, just without the dreadful self-realisation pay-off bit at the end. It takes a special kind of brave, tortured genius to actually see the whole thing through, though.

Posted by Jimmy Big Nuts (Member # 895) on :

yeah, but the self realisation is really what you're working up to the whole time. All it takes is tub full of bitterness and self delusion to kick things into gear, but the whole exercise is actually a desperate search for comfort and validation, in the face of the kind of defeat that only the terminally aspirational yet crushingly weak can feel.

Anyway, I think my dad had a convertible XR3i at one point, and that was nice to ride in.

What was Abby doing at this house of posh non-friends anyway? I'm imagining a weekend long domination session where the men were ridden like dogs, made to eat shit, and locked in cages, all under the watchful eye of mistress A. Or the opposite, where it's Story of A, and poor abby is whipped and fucked all weekend long, and branded at the end of it.

Hang on, you don't ride dogs do you. Ridden like ponies. Complete with buttplug tail and saddle. and a nosebag full of glue and poppers.

In bizarre this month there's a chick who lives her entire life in a red pvc all-over gown, so she looks like the imperial guard from star wars. Like, just a red sheet. Over her head that reaches the floor. A hole for her mouth. Her whole life though! Make you wonder doesn't it. Makes you wonder what kind of stuff Abby gets up to on her visits to country estates.

That would mean spending the whole weekend in a sort of swan-dive pose. That would be pretty uncomfortable. What with being in a rubber bag and having strangers tugging at your cock...

Posted by Jimmy Big Nuts (Member # 895) on :

well, being uncomfortable is probably half the fun. Otherwise you'd just sit on the sofa and watch telly all weekend. Watch old detective shows. Eat hot dog sausages straight from the fridge. wear the same t-shirt for three days. Ignore the phone. ration out cigarettes. Binge on coca cola.

watch the erotic films on tv after 10. Watch Under Siege two nights in a row. Keep rinsing out the same bowl for cereal. pick your toenails. take aspirin. drink from the tap. get pillows from the bedroom. read an old magazine. Think about calling a dating line.

Don't forget, spending 4 hours a night watching Babecast, because you're too cheap to spend out on a proper porn channel (and besides you know you never see the action on them anyway, they're a bloody waste of money) and you'd rather have a wank on your sofa in front of the telly than go into the study and turn on the computer, but you left it too long and the initial boner you got when you first flicked over went down, so you're then stuck with a limp weiner in your hand, which you'll start furiously tugging as if it were a hand pump in a balloon inflating competition, the moment you see an accidental flash of labia or butthole.

Or maybe that's just me..

Well, Gary Busey went on to star in a David Lynch film, and have his own TV series. Tommy Lee Jones was later in Natural Born Killers, Men in Black, and recently had a festival winning directorial debut. Steven Seagal has only just released his second album and his own energy drink. So, it wasn't like Under Seige was a fast track to straight-to-video hell. She was pretty good in that film. At the end, when she's saluting and she's joned the navy. And Steven salutes the camera. She looks pretty intense in that scene. All tearful yet resiliant. She looks like she knows where she's going. She's still working now, but... let's just say it'll be a long time before she has her own energy drink.

It was my boyfriend’s brother’s birthday weekend, where various of his old school chums come and visit to drink all their parent’s booze and be fed all their food. There was little to no bondage, but there was a whole lamb spitroast which has some comic potential?

However, one of my other friends actually spent the previous weekend at The Other World Kingdom www.owk.cz (image safe, but maybe not subject) with her slave, so this post is not totally devoid of kink. She said that all the Czech Mistresses were frighteningly ugly, spent all their time getting pissed in the bar and didn’t bother to put any make-up or fancy clothes on. Kiefer Sutherland only has himself to blame for the delay of his 24 action figure - he set fire to the prototype during a drunken night out.

The action man's new figure has been developed by McFarlane Toys and will hit stores later this year (07), but the mini-Jack Bauer should have hit shelves much earlier.

Sutherland explains, "They tried to come out with one a couple of years ago and they had sent me the doll for my approval... We took the doll out for a night to have some fun and we'd had some drinks. We sat it on the corner of the table.

"We started torturing him around 11 o'clock at night, and, by two o'clock in the morning, we had set him on fire in the parking lot.

"We got up the next day and there was just this puddle of wax. His clothes didn't burn, which I thought was pretty cool... and then I got a call the next day saying, 'Did you like the doll?' I said, 'Yeah, it was great.' And they said, 'Well, Ok, good, you gotta send it back to us because that was the prototype... It took that guy a year to make it.'
