Currently playing: the new Uncharted game which is fucking brilliant, because of course it is. Next will be either one of the pile of PSVR games I picked up in a recent sale or Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes because it's been lying around for an age or possibly RIME because it looks lovely. I was playing Just Cause 3 but its main missions can get to fucking fuck (the worst kind of shitty fucking escort bullshit) so I'll probably just liberate some more of its islands then bin it of.

Getting a VR game is quite the surprise, pity it's some multiplayer bollocks. Also, the fact that the studio behind it is effectively dead by Sony's hand means it's a bit of a freebie from their point of view and probably not the start of a trend.
Infamous has always seemed like the most generic of generic open world nonsense, though I'd be happy to hear good stuff from anyone who's actually played it instead of my witless mutterings?
Hatoful Boyfriend looks cool and I'll definitely be giving it a shot. Though I worry that as a sort of satire of dating games it'll still include too much of the genre conventions to hook me.
We Are Doomed I know nothing of: what's it's deal then?
Child of Light: played the demo ages ago, hated it. It wasn't really my type of game though and I was in the minority in not liking it so I reckon most people will think it a good addition.

I mostly only play dumb, big budget stuff. I enjoyed Arkham Knight and Doom. Doom, especially which makes me lurch around in my chair, physically willing my character to strafe faster. You know how when you first show someone how to play computer games (usually a girl you are trying to sleep with), and they yank the controller around when they want to turn a corner or whatever? That's what Doom reduces me to. I can normally manage about 60 minutes at a time before I need to sit somewhere quiet and calm down.

Unfortunately I don't get to play on my Playstation(s) often - the childe does when he comes to stay and amazes me with his imagination - he's mad on subway trains so to hear his enthusiastic narration whilst playing need for speed along the lines of 'we must make it to Grand Central else we'll never get the 7 train!' - well, it's quite funny.
We did get him a couple of Lego games - the movie one which he completed, and another akin to Minecraft which he seems to be quite adept at for a 5 year old.
Anyway as a result I get the bug again to play but don't think I can honour the time in a new game that is worth the investment, unless it's something I know I will lose myself in (GTA being an example) - I partly blame this on Ringo at the UT2004 shambles where my gaming experience was scarred by getting killed by a headshot 17 times in a row.
We have in my town a branch of GameStop which sells also used games - some of them ridiculously cheap (like $2) - any of these worth a punt?

Those are all multiplayer only. From what you say above I think you'd be happier playing something with a big single player campaign.

That was interestingly, my next point. Last time I had a raffle through the bins and pulled out a handful of games the young chap working there pointed out I needed to have a subscription (I guess to Playstation Plus) for them to be of use.
Anything from the last couple of years you'd recommend that is more my thing then?

I've just pulled the trigger on a GTX 1060 to bring the gaming capabilities of my PC up to C21 standard. Maybe I'll give Fallout 4 another bash now I can turn the grpahics up to a point where it doesn't look like a load of old shit.
Thinking of getting GTA for the online fun, and alos for the mods. Assetto Corsa is on my shopping list as well. Anything else out there by way of big AAA titles that aren't stupid shooty army man games?

Allegedly the Pascal chipset has certain instruction sets that allow it to process VR way more efficiently than the previous 9x0 generation cards. Who knows how well this works, although review sites seem to suggest it gives a fairly decent experience.
I just recently rebuilt my system with a new mobo, RAM, SSD, and CPU, so this is really the last part of a full upgrade. I went down the i5 route as they seem to offer the best VFM at the moment and there are a lot of very decent motherboards out there. Especially affordable if you're not interested in overclocking.
I got burned before by buying AMD, so for the moment I'm sticking with Intel.

I've not played any of the Witcher games. Do you need to have played the previous ones? I've also not played any of the Arkham games. I'm pretty far behind actually. This is what happens when Minecraft eats up your life.

I'm hoping to put some of my semi-vintage gear together into a PC to do games with. I have a load of old Core i7 860 machines and some old Xeons, an old Mac Pro (2008, iirc), piles of RAM, and a few decent SSDs. Sadly my most recent graphics card is a GTX650 (previously used for media centre duties).
Is there any point in getting a new graphics card for one of these old machines? If so, which ones are reasonably priced, in stock, and have decent performance? I'm mostly looking to play driving sims like Assetto Corsa and maybe some FPS / action games on the TV via SteamLink.
I think VR's a bit out of my financial reach at the moment...

I'd be interested, although I still really don't have a lot of concept about what the game is (fuck I sound like an old). I know it's pretty much a sandbox and you can play it how you want - just interested in what you actually do with it and how you see TMO playing this.

I meant to say more than that. Travel to magic worlds, punch spiders, slay dragons and generally fulfill silly and small goals like building your own world together. The most fun comes from after months of play accidentally popping up out of the ground after an epic adventure and going 'oh so THAT'S where that is' and you recognise a small hut you built last year, that you hid in, cowering in fear.

Killzone isn't multiplayer only, it's got a proper single player campaign. I haven't played it though so can't make a recommendation either way. What I can say is that if you've got a PS4 and haven't played Uncharted 4 then you're mad.

I mean, Mikee sums it up pretty well. You make your own fun in Minecraft. There's a survival/RPG element, as well as raw crafting. In a nutshell you start off with nothing and have to mine resources b hitting them with your fists. So you punch a tree until wood comes out. Then you can use the wood to make basic wooden tools, with which you can mine stone, then you can make stone tools which are stronger and more efficient. Then you can create an oven which you can use to smelt iron, or bake bricks. So you can make increasingly complex resources as you progress. It means that when you've got a sweet house made from lots of complex materials, it represents dozens or even hundreds of hours of work. What makes it really satisfying is when you work together to mine vast levels of resource and then build a sweet stronghold. Or club together and go off exploring in a group. The world is dangerous at night, so you have to either set up temporary camps or get suitably tooled up to survive.
But on a fundamental level, there's something beautifully peaceful and rewarding about the mere act of playing the game. The visual style, the sound effects, the ambient music, the lighting, it all comes together to create this incredibly rich world that's a joy to just explore and interact with.
I really like the idea of playing with a big group of intelligent, imaginative, creative people. But failing that, perhaps I could play with you guys..

Ringo - that's the answer that Wikipedia and just about every other resource is missing. Sounds very promising and something I would like to have a try of.
Next point - is it platform agnostic? IE can I play through a console whilst you connect via PC?

I think it helps in terms of understanding who some of the npc's are and the preceding storyline, it's not essential though. I have Witcher 3 and it's pretty good, although I haven't got all that far through it yet.

Following my PC upgrade, I figured I'd get a triple A style game to see what it could do. After much deliberation I settled on Rise of the Tomb Raider, having been quite a big fan of the previous games.
The graphics really are quite incredible, especially the facial animation on Lara. The skin textures, the way little lines on her brow appear and disappear with subtle facial movements, the gloss of her eyes, really just looks so lifelike. I've seen decent facial animation in other games but this really is another level entirely. Very impressive. All the visuals in the game are great really, giving a very tangible sense of the environments, the temperature, the textures, etc.
Gameplay wise, seems pretty good, though there seems to be quite a lot of cutscenes and QTEs. You feel like you're never more than a few minutes from a cutscene. Though I'm only 10% in and already I think they're becoming less frequent - hopefully as the game goes on there will be less handholding.
So overall, an enjoyable, impressive experience. Four thumbs fresh.

I enjoyed it, though not quite as much as the previous one which I adored enough to play through on the Xbox originally and then again when it was cheap on the PC. I don't remember it being particularly heavy on cut scenes and whatnot so yeah, that probably does calm down a bit when you get further in. It is a very pretty game for sure, even on the PS4.
