Wow. You're 100% right.

Return from Brighton to Victoria is £17.65

Single from Kings Cross to York on the Friday is £28.50 and from York to Kings Cross on the Sunday is £25.

So that means it is £71.15 plus the cost of a tube across london, so about £76 in total or something which is not far off half the price.

Thanks for that McDirts. I'm surprised that a Player has to use the trains so much that he knows the ways to get a cheap ticket.

Perhaps that's how McD gets to travel Player Class for the price of a Standard Class ticket.

I often buy tickets for my Moms to come and visit me from Philly. Tickets from Philly to Bel Air are mad expensive yo. Split it down per station and all of a sudden the getting's good.

Obviously Players don't travel anywhere by regional railway. Or indeed any railway. Except the Orient Express yo.

Any luck with this yet? might be fun to race 'online'

I've got the GT Legends mod pack for it too which is super cool.

Well I had a nightmare of a time trying to get this game installed. I bought the combined Race 07 + GTR Evolution on DVD-ROM. It asked if I wanted to install the online or offline version - I picked online. It then did something with Steam and installed GTRE. It said it was complete, so I clicked Play GTRE and then it told me Race 07 was required and proceeded to download the whole bloody thing from Steam. Not just updates - the whole Race 07 game. Shouldn't this have been on the DVD? Took about three hours to download that.

So I finally got it up and running and configured my Logitech wheel. For some reason the wheel constantly jerks from left to right, a couple of times a second, even when you're driving in a straight line, on a flat surface. This doesn't happen in any other games and I can't find out what's causing the problem. Could it be something to do with dead zones? I tried 2% and 5% deadzones on the steering axis to no effect. It's almost drivable if I concentrate really hard on fighting the left-right wiggle. I can nearly keep up with the pack (100% difficulty) on the first track in WTCC 2007 but I'm sure my lap times are suffering.

I've tried searching the web, but can't find any meaningful answers. Any suggestions?

That's really odd, and what makes it odder is the fact that my logitech wheel does the same thing with the demo of GT Legends but is fine with GTR. I have a 2 degree dead zone set but it works fine with no dead zone at all. I'd say it's probably something in your feedback settings which needs tweaking.

There are also scalable sensitivity options so you have a less sensitive area towards the centre. i.e. steering inputs towards centre are translated to sublte movements in the game, while the further you turn the wheel, the more sensitive it gets. I have this turned up reasonably high which works well for faster, undulating tracks.

I just remembered I installed the offline version so can't say about Steam. I should probably change that as I probably can't play online at the moment.

I did mess about with these a bit, trying to find the culrpit, but to no avail. I seem to remember there were four different sliders under FFB - engine, springs, dampers, etc - and they were all set as 0% by default. Any idea what yours are set to?

I tend to keep the sensitivity around 80% which suits me for most of these sims.

I'm not quite ready to race online yet, but once I've got these FFB problems licked, I'll look forward to it.

Good old Steam. I was frequently moved to bitter tears when Half Life 2 came out, and I was living in a house with a 56k modem. It took me something like 8 hours to make the game playable, even with the DVD. It's the future, you know.

I hadn't had a problem with Steam for years until I bought GTRE. Yes the HL2 fiasco was a pretty big cock-up, but I've found that Steam has improved hugely over the years. I was surprised to find that after recently reinstalling Windows, I was able to connect to Steam and it could download and install all the games I've bought without having me having to dig out the original discs and CD-keys. As easy as pi-racy.

The only thing that pisses me off about it is that many games are available on DVD-ROM from actual shops or online resellers for about half of the Steam price. Obviously they have server costs to cover, but surely that doesn't add up to the cost of disc manufacture, packaging, distribution, shop markup, etc.

Yeah that seems nuts - I thought one of the big selling points of steam was that it would be cheaper, because it didn't have to offer a discount to retailers and so on.

I just reinstalled and tried to lauch it with Steam and got the same thing - needs to install Race 07. Predicted time - 12 hours. That's fucking ridiculous. You buy a game but in order to play it online you have to download a whole other game?!

Anyway, I've still got the offline version on there so I checked my FFB settings on it and they run thusly:

FFB Effects - LOW
FFB Strength - 85%
Reverse Effects - ON
Steering Force - 170%
Steering Vibration - 4%
Engine - 9%
Brakes - 9%
Curbs - 25%
Impact - 100%

Which all seems a bit odd as I don't think I tweaked it much but it seems a bit weird. You'd have thought they'd have a baseline of like, 50% for each one and then you tweak it up or down accordingly. Who knows. That's what it's set to and it feels good.

Not sure how much the Logitech drivers come into play though as there are FFB settings on there too, or if it's totally app controlled.

Thanks for that Ringo. My settings match yours and it seems to work properly now. Unfortunately it makes the driving feel completely different - I'm having to adapt to the new handling.

But, man those Caterhams are excellent...

I got three achievments in one game yesterday. The one where you only use pistols, the one where all four people survive and surviving a campaign I hadn't done myself. Rock.

I keep failing to get the Cr0wnd achievement though as I suck.

there's a great chance of me being online sometime over the weekend. I'm still playing that fucking lost odyssey though. I'm completely gripped by that thing. On the final disc now, but have done almost no sidequests, secrets etc.

Lost Odyssey was good. I think I was on about 35-40 hours when I got to the last disk and finished on about 70 hours. It's a big one the last disc if you're going for all achievements. (Well, I missed out on one, but that one was stupid and involved kicking every single fucking pot in the game)

You will all be excited to hear that I just got another three achievements in one game of L4d. One for not disturbing the witch, one for not having to be revived at all and one for survivinv dead air! At this rate I'll have 4000/1000 points for this game in no time!

So, I went online over the weekend and Thorn was playing the Xbox Dashboard game so I didn't want to disturb him from that, and Benway was a bit caught up playing "Away for 47 minutes" and I know he's been working hard to get the "Away for 1 hour" achievement and with him so close to that I thought he would be furious if I interrupted his brilliant streak so I had to play L4D with other forum favourites.

We had a great game. Kovacs was constantly entertaining on the microphone regaling us with witty stories and setting up some backstory for the characters as well as suggesting that as Louis and Francis seemed to be so close all the time perhaps there was something going on. Had us in stitches! Cheers m9!

It was a shame that just as we were all getting in the elevator and the doors were closing a smoker grabbed Bamba and pulled him through. I tried to shoot that smoker Bamba, but I had the shotgun out at the time and that just wasn't good for the distance shot, sorry about that [Frown]

It has to be said though, Discodamage is a headshot MONSTER. She was like a woman possessed. Zombies streaming towards me after the car alarm had gone off and I was having to reload and I sensed imminent death then BANG head explodes, BANG another head explodes BANG BANG BANG. Brilliant stuff.

We'll have to do it again guys!

I'm ready for some online racing now, Ringo.

My attic is finally bedecked with an awesome Recaro leather driving seat. It's eight-way electrically adjustable, and also heated, although I haven't managed to get the electrics to work yet, using a mains-12V adaptor. Maybe I need a car battery under my desk?

It's also got a built-in airbag, which should afford me some protection in the event of a 170mph crash. So, yes, I'm ready to hit the road...

ETA: Ringo's blatantly going to kick my arse.

Excellent! So what are we driving? Caterhams?

I've also been enjoying the *Touring Car Legends mod for rFactor. It's got some great 80s-90s motors, like the Sierra Cosworth, Escort RS Turbo and even the Rover SD1, Volvo 240, etc. The Cossie is a pretty scary beast - I've flung it in to the Donington armco more often than I can count.

I was at a track day event when one guy who'd retrofitted a US market XR4ti closer to Sierra Cosworth specs tried to complete an autocross course just after dropping his exhaust system. It still had the US market 2.4l turbo four, but tweaked to the point that without the backpressure from the recently lost exhaust, the car was undrivable. Made lots of tire smoke as it went around in circles though, shortly before being disqualified.

I think we just need to know each others' Steam IDs. Mine's ajpaynter.

There's a message when you load up the Steam version of GTR:E that says something like "Press Shift + Tab to access the Steam community while playing" so I guess that'd be the place to start.

That's very odd. positive backpressure is usually only a requirement for naturally aspirated engines where pulse resonance is a factor. With a turbine you don't have any exhaust resonance as it's all deadened by the compressor. Generally speaking the lower the pressure behind the turbo the better as it aids spool and increases the responsiveness of the turbo. Look at old turbocharged GT cars and the 'exhaust' systems on them are little more than a couple of inches pipe coming straight off the exhaust housing.

Is not not possible the guy was just, like, not awfully good?

Interesting fact - when Sierra Cosworths were used in the WTCC they ran with 'spool' differentials - completely locked rear differentials meaning both rear wheels constantly engaged and turning at the same speed. And they were absolutely mighty. I only mention this because most internet fools try to tell you that a locked/welded differential will be lethal on the road.

Anyway, Misc I think my steam ID is lfschris (same as my Live for speed ID) so, uh, I guess give that a try or something. I might even be online tonight.

What I meant to clarify was that the rig he'd built was so overboosted that without the backpressure of the exhaust to keep it in check, it couldn't do anything but spin the rears once the turbo spooled up. I don't think the engine as a whole lasted very long under those conditions either, if I recall correctly.
