Hey! It's still going on, so keep those birthday wishes a'comin. Off out soon to lunch, then cinema, then drinks. Mmmm... And No Work.

Thanks everyone. I had a lovely day, involving right posh lunch with Delicious wine, drunken shoe-shopping, seeing The Darjeeling Limited (v good), and cocktails at the Sanderson (hotel, not ben). I got lots of fab presents, and generally feel a very lucky girl.
Report from nephew's birthday party: two hours to drive across london, no food or drinks for grown ups, no-one we knew, loud party games, resorted to handing cake round for something to do, treated like servant by doting parents, generally fucked off. Two and a half hours to drive home. By the way, what's with this shit? Doting parents standing behind chairs of children at party food table. I'm sure parents didn't even stay to parties in my day.

I always like how children's parties are in Jilly Cooper novels, when the adults are a seething mass of lust and alcohol, with kids barely remembered underfoot, or mainlining almost pure alcohol from the breast of a mother who is swigging Bollinger at the same time. Ah, Jilly. Any children's parties I am ever involved with are so going to be exactly like that.

We had this at my nephew's birthday party last year. Huge family pressure to go, awful spare-wheel-ness and the room full of hideous parents comparing notes about who had the most nanny problems. Parents def didn't stay to parties when I was little - why the hell would you? Ohh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY HERBS!
