Shock horror! Keef starts a topic in Life!

Myself and a few friends are coming down to that London tomorrow for a Chemical Brothers gig at Olympia and afterwards will be heading to the Soho area as that's where our hotel is. We're looking for a half-decent bar around there that will a)let us in at around 11pm and b) will stay open till late (past 1am) - so, any suggestions? I thought O'Neils stayed open till 3 but a quick phone call informs us that they close at 1.

What say you TMO?

Those around Wroxham, Stalham and Ingham are nice.

The ones just off the B1332 are better though - I used to play in them when I was a kid.

But back to the topic, is everywhere a bar after 11? Even those that aren't beforehand?

In an effort to slightly helpful...I think the Jazz bar on dean st may be slightly less horrible. But I dont know about opening times.

Everywhere will be packed and loud. If that is ok then anywhere will be fine. You may have to pay to get into a 'club' though.

Field, I think. All wrapped up in an autumnal woolly, with a picnic blanket, or maybe some mackintosh squares. A book, and cheese sandwiches and maybe penguins for dunking in thermos tea. That would be lovely.

What about Waxy O'Connors? Quiet, small, cheap. Friendly staff. No slappers. Old fashioned, like. Tree in the middle. Good ventilation.

Do not go to Thirst. Thirst is horrible. I don't know why Babb would recommend it. She clearly doesn't remember the awful hour we once spent there and how the two of us shouted at our friends to drink faster so we could leave.

Idiot Babb.

Never go to Thirst.

Ooooooh, was it that place? The black and white place with enough room to fit 3 people, as long as one of them is really small? The place that played the most random music ever?

Yeah, that place is shit.

Thanks for the options Thorn & Babb I'll lookn into them (although Thirst might get the elbow from the list based on Lilo's opinion).

"Everywhere will be packed, loud and sh1t" - this is true for most city centres these days though, isn't it? It's just a case of picking the best of a bad bunch. Or am I just getting old? In fact I curiously feel older than I did yesterday. Not sure why that would be, not sure at all...

i dont ever hang out in soho anymore

but worth a look is trisha's. it's more of a drinking den, with wonderful scrappy 50s decor and quite often live jazz etc. i love the place 57 greek street i think. the buzzer doesn't say trisha's but something different but you'll figure it out.

else, really dunno. i always just ended up in one of the late night places around old compton street. none of them great really, but okay

Also, there's a great bar on in Bacon Alley where all the staff are all robots. It's a long road and they move the venue every week so you'll have to ask about. The place doesn't have an actual name but their fifty pound zombies are to die for and the Vikram is a tipple worth sixty quid of anyone's money. If you can actually find your way to the toilets there (there's usually some crazy mirror work going on) it's well worth tipping the hygiene droid a twenty. He'll give you the best laugh of the night. The droid in the unisex loos, mind, not the robodog thing in the gents under the gin igloos.

By the way, everything I posted about Waxy O'Connors is the opposite of true. It's not even open past midnight. Sorry. Sorry. I thought it'd get a few laughs here among the hip people who know it's shit, but they're probably too hip to ever go there, even once. I actually used to quite like it until I was at a meat with Benway and London and I suggested going there. They both exchanged a glance and did this "pffft!" laugh into their drinks. Then London leant across and whispered something in Benway's ear behind her hand and he - looking at me - just kind of went "Hahaha! Yeah".

So I went off it after that. It does have a tree in it, though.

There is a tree in the middle, though, isn't there?

I'm sure that edit wasn't there before.

Personally I'd be happy with a cocoa* in the hotel bar but there will be a few of our number who will be in, lets say, an altered state who will want to dance their t1ts off until dawn while I get bored and accused of being no fun when I eventually suggest going to bed at 4am.

* Ok, so maybe a beer or two, I'm not that old yet.

right. As a rule drinking in Soho is shit. However, there's one or two places that are bearable. One is The Scene on Dean Street - the beer's shit but it's open late and there's normally something interesting going on there. There's another place, Tottenham Court Road end of Oxford street. If you're facing TCR it's on your left down the last alley before you hit TCR proper. Full of spanish bars and second hand record shops. It's a little downstairs bar, generally playing some mod stuff (60's R&B, Northern SOul and the like) it's small, lively and there's a decent atmosphere and it's open late.

Do you mean Hanway Street?

Hanway Street is good for late night drinking establishments.

Never go to Thirst.

I went there the other week for a friend's birthday drinks and thought it was 'alright' as far as wanky Soho bars go, sitting outside was definitely preferable to putting up with the crap music played inside mind.

Also there's a little runty bald guy taking money on the door when they start charging for entry later on, and he appeared to be possibly the biggest prick I've ever seen manning a door - and that's some tough competition he's up against. He seemed to be the biggest trouble maker there, pissing people off and then expecting the poor bouncers to deal with it (they were almost apologetic in the way they dealt with one guy). Keef, ask Chris about him, he'll be more than happy to elaborate I imagine [Wink]

Who said ICA? I'd go with the ICA, too. You'll have to buy a days membership (a couple of quid) but it's a nice bar, with (occasionally) a good cocktail barman.

Oh noes conflicting opinions!

Although, the music was my (and Babb's too, all her opinions come from me - and her jokes, she is a dirty joke thief) main problem. It all was dance versions of twenty year old songs.

Because I'm a married, shagged out father of two whose more likely to ask the barman for a high chair than a highball and you're London's premier Facebook butterfly.

Well as it happens we did go to one of the bars mentioned - Waxy O'Connors. But it was in the afternoon, before the gig. By the time we got back into town later I doubt we would have been let in anywhere - a combination jean wearing, walking boot wearing, a few face-chewers, me covered in glitter and all of us more than a little moist with sweat. Turns out the only viable option at 1am was the hotel bar. Oh well, all over for another year.

ah yes, that's what 'The Scene' is now called. Thankyou, I thought it might have changed it's name, but still what's a trifle like the actual name of the place in the grand scheme of things when giving people directions?
