I'm going to give a woot to talking nonsense. You know that nonsense which sounds like proper language but when you actually try to understand it, it turns out to be completely meaningless.

On the drifting forum I use, some noob had put up a video of himself doing donuts and handbrake turns on a football pitch in a Toyota Rav4. Everyone was like "you're an enormous gaylord, FOAD" etc. I was like:

For what it's worth, you did very well for a first go. I would like to maybe give you some pointers though. You did well with the steering, but the idea of optimum drifting is the balance using slip frequencies and accellerances. To give an example - when you reach the moment of inertia, the tendency is to use torque to try to keep the car from under-revving. If you actually do the opposite, and increase the angle of steer-thrust, you'll find that actually the power curve becomes close to the optimum rev-line, and so your drift angle will increase at a rate inversely proportionate to the rate at which brake assist becomes less noticeable. It takes a little bit of practice to get this right and really if you want to advance onto the higher speed steering techniques, this is something you must be constantly aware of.

There are also a few things you can do to improve the performance of the car. Each wheel can be shimmed, according to the requirements of the surface and the kind of speeds you're hoping to achieve. Obviously the roll centres need to be taken into account when you are calculating the angles of the shims, but I find it's best to just take a selection along with me so I'll generally be able to shim my wheels at the correct angle. It's an easy modification and really does help when it comes to minimising the contact patch. Obviously tyres are important too. The number of radial bands in the cross-ply construction has a fairly dramatic effect on the volumetric torque efficiency of any simple breathing modifications you have done to your engine. If you are using an artificially induced engine, for instance, you could go with 5. On a 'stroker' (engine with ceramic rod shafts) you would be best with about 38.

Hopefully this will be of some help to you. Good work and keep trying!

Well, at least he's out there giving it a go, y'know? Not just sat on a forum telling people how it's done. Hopefully with my sound advice he'll be able to advance to the next level.

I was convinced right up until the breathing modifications to the engine.

To be fair, wen you say breathing modifications, it refers to replacing things like the air intake, filter, and exhaust systems with aftermarket items to improve the flow of gasses through the engine. So it's a term which is fairly widely used. I just used it in completely the wrong context.

Woot!

I get paid lot's'so money, work for a State owned (kinda sorta... complicated) school, get to faff about almost all day every day, got paid last month with 123 hours over time, had a chin wag with boss and blagged 8 weeks paid holiday, bought tickets to go home, bought a new computer, iPod Touch (still still feeling dirty), netbook, new phone, and looking at a flat screen telly.

Working 9-5 is SOOO much better than freelance!

Woot. I am now 100% free of Microsoft at home.

I shall attempt to get a video of me Sultans of Swinging online later. Perhaps tomorrow after my haircut as I don't want to be on "the internet" with messy hair.

I've almost finished the Bassonator - a two string bass guitar version of the much fabled Avonator. The strings are tuned an octave apart and a motor sits between them, fapping them alternately with a strip of plastic. A speed control varies the sound from a slow 60 rpm pling-plong-pling-plong right up to a 6,000 rpm drone which sounds more like it's being played with a bow. It has an ignition key to start it, and a full size front panel made from the side of an old PC case, with the paint stripped off to reveal a rather tasty brushed metal finish.

I like the fact that you can wear the Bassonator really low, because there's no need to strum anything. I'm hoping to mount a spike on the bottom at some point, so it can be played upright, like a double bass.

I'll try and put a video together tonight, but the best way to see it would be to come to a future Interloper gig - once we've found a suitable way to work it into the set.

I'm thinking of making an Acousticator next. Obviously it can't be powered by electricity so it'll have one of these mounted inside:

With my right hand. I know it totally defeats the point of having a string plucking system, but that's sort of the joke.

I totally would of been, but the problem is that my partner in crime, Jack is only 20 and doesn't have to work full-time so naturally he was asleep until 4pm this afternoon or I could have rustled up 50 quid for it easily.

I've been to two meetings today with quite senior people present, and in both I managed to sound intelligent and clued-in, and raised valid issues which have either saved us time and money doing pointless work or have raised concerns which if unaddressed would have killed a project delivery.

I am consultant WIN.

Plus I have a lovely weekend ahead of watching the Silver Fox get my garden in shape (oo-er!) on Saturday, maybe followed by some gentle moshing and/or bogling at the Dot to Dot Festival in the late afternoon and evening, Sunday to be spent eating lovely home-made nosh and quaffing much wine and port with good friends before staggering to the pub in the evening, then Monday to generally do as I wish. I'm giving a big Woot to Darryn as he miraculously got my Sky box working yesterday so I have telly again. And also a big Woot to myself as my boss dumped the early shift on me on my own at the last minute as part of my training, and all has gone well.

But I need to also send a big woot to my Dad who is in hospital with Pneumonia, which is seriously worrying. Keep in there pal and the biggest Woot is for you!
