A South African friend of mine was utterly confused by this whole concept. It took us hours to convince him that we weren't all taking the piss, and then he immediately went to call his mum to tell her what 'the crazy British' were doing now.

I could probavbly Google for this but, for the sake of making conversation, what actually is the justification for the entire thing? I saw some news programmer the other day with a school headmistress complaining that it meant children going home during hours of darkness because of the time shift and how it should thus be abolished.

Without, as you say, doing a Google, and fully acknowledging that what follows may be utter pants, I understand that "normal" time is the one experienced during winter (i.e. what started today) - this is GMT. The time we've had for the last six months is "British Summer Time", also known as "Daylight Saving Time". So it would follow that any complaints about kiddies going home in the dark (something I remember well) are to do with normal GMT and the simple fact that the UK is a northern country where the sun rises late and sets early during the winter months.
So why the change to British Summer Time, then, you ask, when the problem is actually in the winter?
Er, I dunno. Summat about industry and electricity and stuff, innit.

I thought it was something to do with little chiluns not getting knocked down by cars on the way to school on dark mornings?

Ah rooster, your link wins not only because it explains it all a lot more betterer, but also because it includes a quote from the venerably hirsute Robertson Davies.

That is the most thoughtful reason I have ever heard. It's not that though.
