It just stuck out because - though I can't remember the precise wording of your post: perhaps Thorn can? - the thread was about politics, and your post was about politics, and then suddenly out of nowhere came 'Yeah that C. Rice is a bit of a dog though eh!!!!' and then back to the politics. And she was surrounded by lots of other politicians who were dogs too, but her doggishness was the only doggishness considered worthy of comment.

yeah but the spunk dealers (magnier and whassihisface) will sell at some point.

the placards do make me want to point out the PLC bit at the end of the name Manchester United.

(i have a secret soft spot for man utd. there i said it. i secretlythinkfergie is gr11).

and the current board though ultimately driven by money, have always made funds available for fergie tinkering away. this, plus the fact chelsea are rocking the boat, the team is getting older and no new stars seem to be coming through to replace the homegrown boys, is making them worry.
don't call them wankers just because you don't like football.

but still. you're right, they are stupid if they don't believe the club is for sale. what they need to do is buy the shares with a supporters group.

oh i don't know.

i guess i'm just scared of the idea of someone coming in a ripping up man utd. its not like where chelski loved the idea of someone coming in and buying players left right and centre and pretending that its all for the love of the club.
becuase this has been rambling on for so long, it seems as if this is a "well you keep refusing me, but i've got deep pockets and i will get you."

oh fuck it.

No - but Astro did, and now she's trying to be all like "Yeah! Yeah!" alongside you.

shit.

But! That's different, anyway. I'm not saying that commenting negatively on people's appearance is wrong per se, it's just that women who are over a certain age and not in tip-top, flawless physical condition seem to attract criticism a lot more readily than their male counterparts.

Well, she is ugly. As is Prince Charles, but we've known about that for years.

There is plenty of incredulity surrounding the sexing of blantant XY munters, such as David Mellor and David Blunkett. There was plenty of sneering directed at Chris Evans as well, for his looks as well as his attitude and ego.

What is genuinely disturbing is the way women seem to scrutinise their sisters down to the last toenail. Open Heat or Now, and it's all FINGERS LIKE TOES, SWEATY PITS, and BUILDERS ELBOW. I didn't even know what a builders elbow was until I read a feature in Heat about celeb noses. You don't get men reading mags that highlight the minute physical 'failings' (differences) of their sex.

Are there any mags for women which aren't about celebs or physical appearance? Mainstream ones, I mean, not Bust.

I don't know my point, but I don't think that saying that somebody is unattractive, horse faced, whatever is a sexist crime. It's universally applicable.

I agree with you too Benway - I do think that women are often worse than men at pointing out perceived physical flaws of other women. You only have to read handbag's celebrity gossip forum to see that.

That's true actually - pretty much any male politician who has an affair exposed in the UK is subject to a round of abuse ridiculing their physical appearance. And when John Major nobbed Edwina Curry people's heads pretty much caved in in a dual pronged disgustathon.

I'm curious as to which ugly male celebs are let off the hook, lookswise. People like Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger etc, who may once have been sex object are frequently mocked for how they should act their age. I've lost count of the number of Rod Stewart lampoons I've seen that contrast Do you think I'm sexy with the fundamental unsexiness of a 50 something man. Reporting on the likes of Harrison Ford and Michael Douglas nobbing fit chicks was generally derisory and disgusted in tone. And all that's nothing compared with someone like Peter Stringfellow, who's sole purpose in life seems to be being held up as an example of an utterly grotesque, unfuckable man who inexplicably gets to have sex.

So i don't really buy Astro's assertion that the same thing doesn't apply to men. I think you could build an argument questioning why a society does focus in so much on whether someone's attractive, physically, or not, but you're on tricky ground if you try and break it down into a men vs women thing.

Nice one Astro. Us men, we are caught in the crossfire of the "YOU ARE UGLY" adverts that are dropped onto the media platforms too. That shit is like agent motherfucking orange of the soul, whithering self esteem off the bone and causing personality defects through generations. I mean, you can shield your eyes, but it's like dresden here. Especially in London, where every available space has an advert on it.

So, come on ladies - be excellent to each other, not nasty.

The only way to really solve this is to do an Excel spreadsheet comprising every single famous man and woman there has ever been, with an agreed score of attractiveness (using some kind of poll system) for each, and then breaking down the results into age and gender.

It's all very well triumphantly naming a few aging rockers and actors that have had disparaging remarks made about them, but that doesn't convince me that there is a general trend of critising the appearance of older men, as much as there is with older women.

Work has seen me avoid the boards for a bit, but coming back to this I find I have upset some people, something I think those who know me know I would not do purposely and for that I apologise. But I certainly don't think that all women above a certain age are unattractive - far from it.

Would it make things better if I commented on Charles looking like the FA Cup, thus negating the sexism issue?

OK - you can cover your ears and go 'la, la, la' every time someone brings up some evidence that might in some way challenge part of what you thought, but it's hardly a strategy likely to convince anyone that what you're saying is accurate.

I didn't mean to say "Ha - because these people have been slagged off I must by right", I was plucking a few examples out of the ether to illustrate that people generally seem equally as uncomfortable with the ageing male as they do the ageing female. There's so many odious stereotypes for the 40+ man - balding fat, defeated/ creepy older man/ slimy sugar daddy - I don't think they can be ignored in their entirety, or dismissed as a few notable exceptions.

I don't think it's any excuse - by the way - that we should cheerfully lay into people's attractiveness as long as it's all equal, but I don't agree that it doesn't happen to men, too. I mean - you've done it yourself ffs, and thought nothing of it.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Of course, there is a general horror of aging in our society - I just think that this horror is expressed more towards aging women than aging men. However, what I'd like to do is make a study of various mainstream media texts (trans= read the Metro on the way into work) and collect examples which either back up or refute your assertions, then have a little think. Can we reconvene in a month to discuss this topic again? Or do we need to sort it out now.

But I didn't say it doesn't happen to men too, and I didn't say that men are the only people who ever do this. I'm totally willing to accept that men get regularly criticised about their appearance, but I do believe that women, especially older women, seem to be more frequently judged solely on the basis of their appearance.

It's on the thread, Tom Boy.

I would suggest that perhaps times are a changin' anyway. There is that image of the Jack Nicholson/Sean Connery character, the silver fox, etc, and perhaps a female equivalent hasn't been so obvious, as in a positive sexual role model for coffin dodgers who like to shag. The attractive ones all seem to be a bit batshit, or at least, that's how they are portrayed. But, this Kim Catrell. She's no spring chicken, she looks okay, and she hasn't gone the Cher route of allowing aliens to replace her skin with a synthetic alternative. Maybe we need more of this.

Sadly, it's probably more like Old=death, and who wants to shag death?

I wonder why? London would probably say "O it's because they can't shoot out any babies from their c**ts anymore, and all men want to do is fill the world with more of their kind", and Dang might say "Because their tits go all saggy and gross. And they smell.", but, is there another, less provocative explanation? A middle ground, as it were?
