I just looked out of my office window and saw this:

 -

The picture doesn't really show you the scale - the building is now engulfed in flames. Everything smells weird. I keep hearing things breaking. And sirens. It's gone really dark. It looks even more like hell out there than usual...

Are there bells ringing? Should you be evacuating?

I can see cabs, buses, grey people making grey progress up Victoria Street. The taillights of the assembled vehicles cluster at the top of the road; a messy spattering of warning lights to prevent anybody accidentally walking to Hyde Park. Opposite me, a dull hue is projected from the offices of United Emirates Airlines, and hunched figures occasionally move in jerk-o-vision from office to meeting room and back again. Bobbed haircuts and grey suit jackets.

A single fruit and veg stall leans against the railings that prevent pedestrians from walking on non-designated crossing zones. From here, now, I can see the partially deflated tomatoes and limp cucumbers absorbing the thin rain that winds around the cashpoints and Congestion Charge signs. A man seems to be constantly arranging the rotting boxes. The occasional passer by stops to stare mournfully at the tawdry collection of wares.

BILLY ELLIOT, I am told in no uncertain terms. LLOYDS TSB, ASK, and Ring Road (N) (A4,A40). My directives and prophecies; a potential route drawn to my attention. The 73 grinds along, and a cyclist is nearly killed for the tenth time today. Toot toot. Up with the umbrella. [Frown]

oh, is this not a 'what can you see out of your window' thread?

I think it's a local retail block which includes Blockbuster Video and Primark. I've just been out on the roof again (sixth floor) and I don't have to look down to see the flames.

It looks pretty serious.

Do you feel any sort of compulsion to watch Misc?

I don't mean in general, I mean in the context of this fiery incident.

Speaking as someone who damn near missed a train not long back on account of a mighty-fine fire somewhere in the environs of Manchester Piccadilly...

Yes I did, and I don't think I was alone. Everyone in the office congregated on the roof to watch. My boss actually went back inside to get the digital camera and then filmed the whole incident...

Ahh...no. Nope, certainly not. Ahem.

Though I did go into town and was somewhat taken aback by the large numbers of youth just lurking about. Not being threatening or anything, after all I am used to hard faced London youth, just a lot of them hanging out. I also bought some jeans.

Tune in tommorow for the next edition of Exeter Update!

Today's scare was indeed nothing more than a minor fire at a disused building next door to my office. Still, it gathered three fire engines, two ambulances and five police vehicles. I guess everyone's in "oh christ" mode at the moment.
