[off topic, sorry] Hi SG - any recommendations for somewhere cheap and central to take my brother to lunch in Brighton tomorrow? We always seem to end up in Las Iguanas, and it might be nice to try somewhere else. [/off topic, sorry]

Why the hell is he visiting there? And no, he most definitely hasn't been shot if he's there. Maybe were he visiting North Philly or Southwest Philly, sure. Or Trenton,NJ. Or Camden, NJ. Or Jersey City, NJ. I could keep listing places, but I won't bore you all.
Ralph, how far is State College from Philly? (an aside: I could mapquest it, but I can't be bothered.)

The Hop Poles is awesome for food. It's on Ship Street perhaps. maybe Middle street. A very good meal for £6-7
Terre a terre is nice but not especially cheap. You can get the terre a tapas which is like a selection of everything they do for about £14 which is OK for 2 to share for lunch but perhaps not enough if you're hungry.
The Eagle is good. In the north laines. I can't remember the road and have to head out now. Will try to suggest more later

I forget. Something about drinking and boning college students.

About 200 miles northwest of Philly.
Really? That far? I always thought it was only about an hour away. Hmpf.
For some reason I am thinking it's near Bethlehem, PA (where I got to see Nirvana!) and I remember that only being about an hours drive. Although, I had just had all of my wisdom teeth removed and was on loads of pain meds. So, in reality it could have been hours and hours away and I wouldn't remember. I did look like a chipmunk though. Not a cute look.
Is it possible to run out of things to look at online? Any suggestions?

Thanks, these both sound good, especially The Hop Poles, so I'll try and steer my brother towards one of them. Are they likely to be so busy at lunchtime that they'll laugh at us if we haven't booked though?
Oh and Amy, I am so unbelievably jealous that you got to see Nirvana live. : sulk :

I had a scholarship there to play football (the proper shit, not this mamby pamby soccer lark)... then I blew my knee out and my future shriveled like the severed ligaments in my knee..
Alright Lickpaw?

You mean the one which is like a slightly more boring version of Rugby Union but with full kevlar body armour so you don't hurt your weaksauce yankee bodies?

Also, don't forget to point out that it's "namby pamby", not "mamby pamby". I'm sure Sabian loves having his English improved in this fashion...

Don't listen to them sabian. We both know that American football is 1000 times tougher than soccer. So you had a scholarship to play at Penn State? That's pretty impressive. Would I be wrong in guessing that you were either offensive or defensive line material?

Surely that covers most options? What else does American Football have? The Passive Aggressive line?
*sigh*
An American football team has an offense, consisting of an offensive line (really, really large men), a quarterback, one or two running backs, wide receivers, and a tight end. The defense consists of the linemen (really, really big men), linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks. There are also special teams players, generally consisting of 2nd and 3rd stringers from either the offense or defense, as well as a punter and placekicker.

Missgolightly: my ex won tickets from a radio station, and that's how we got to see them. They were excellent, if I remember correctly. For some reason I think at the end they mumbled thanks and just walked off. I can't remember if they did an encore. This was 14 years ago now. Christ alive, as I was falling asleep last night I realized that as of March I'll have been listening to The Cure for the last 20 years. A said that just means that they're old and I'm getting old. *sigh*
Not: Excellent photo of Kurt Cobain. I think everyone should get a flickr account.
As for American football: it's complete shit(e) (Sorry Sabian!). Soccer is much more fun to play and watch.

Why do they have so many specialist players when you have one basic premise: run forward with ball over line. Bonus game: kick ball over giant Y.
Edit: different shaped goals.

On offense, for example, only certain players handle the ball and have the opportunity to score. These positions (running backs, receivers, quarterback) tend to be smaller and faster than the linemen who block the defense and protect the quarterback. If the offensive linemen were smaller men, the much larger defensive line would be able to run right over them and tackle the ball carrier with ease...

Having played both, I can say that yes, Rugby is more 'physical' in terms of the ground game... A bit of running and the scrum... But, I challenge any rugby player to play a wide receiver position, run full tilt, go airborne fully extended, and then get whacked by a 230 pound free safety coming from the opposite direction, running full tilt and airborne. Then they'll see why that 'kevlar' is needed!

Iron man football baby, offensive right guard and defensive right tackle.

Yeah, you would say that since soccer is only played by girls or the boys who are too afraid to get hurt!

Even with the kevlar, I'm surprised there aren't more serious injuries in the NFL. The size and speed combination looks pretty lethal at times!

I know someone who used to play American football. He said I should put his pads on so I did. I then asked why you needed pads and his reply was “This is why!” and then slammed his helmet onto my shoulder as hard as he could (no sniggering please, it’s too obvious). Of course, it was a fair impact, and I felt nothing. Impressive. I then took the pads off and invited him to slam his unhelmeted head into my shoulder as hard as he had done the helmet. Strangely enough he seemed to think this would cause him some pain. Want to know why Rugby players don’t jump face first into other players very often? It’s because they’re not wearing pads. AF isn’t a rough sport really, it just looks that way. Like American Wrestling.

Yes, and I could show you equally graphic videos of people injuring themselves playing 'soccer' or tennis, or rugby. Sport is dangerous, that's a fact, but wrapping yourself up in body armour and then calling yourself hardcore seems to be a contradiction slightly.
