I need a girl's name. Does anyone happen to have a nice name and can lend it to me, or knows someone with a name that doesn't mind?

It needs to be:

a) Not religious in any way (like 'Ruth' for example).
b) Not ethnic sounding (like 'M'banii' or something).
c) Not sci-fi or fantasy sounding (like 'Xaxalaana' or something).
d) Not too commonplace (like, say, 'Jane').
e) Can be made up but must sound ok (don't have example).

All the examples are very nice names, but they don't suit my requirements. Just want something pleasant but with no particular associations and not completely bizarre. Does such a thing exist?

Nah, nothing as exciting as that, sad to say. Just need a name for a story. I realised that the name I've been using so far sounds completely ridiculous, like a Dr Who character or something. So I've panicked and now every name I think of sounds more stupid than the last.

Looks like it depends if it's Love or Charity that's included in the translation you're reading.

Confusingly, Peter Gabriel did a rather good track called Of These, Hope which I took to be from that quote but isn't. Unless he's found another translation altogether.

I have actually Soreened myself in half quite recently. It's very popular amongst cyclists, although I think it's really intended for cyclists that have just ridden 50 miles at an average 25mph, rather than ones who have just pootled 100yds to the malt loaf shop and back.

Nah - I found a Beloved CD I hadn't heard for ages. Normally I can't listen to anything beginning with A or B because Thorn put them on the top shelf where I can't reach.

When I was younger so much younger than to day-ay-ay, I had a friend who use to beguile me with his tales of the legendary Robert Unsworth. Robert was the special kid at my friends boarding school, which, fittingly meant he was probably ok as he didn't have the mental capacity to be scarred about all the hearty bumming. Right, so anyway, Robert Unsworth was the special kid who was at my friends boarding school, but because he was a special, he went home every weekend. I don't know why people with a mental handicap are treated differently. Maybe in Lindisfarne they make all boarding-school toffos do stunt-kiting, wrestling bears or any of those other exciting rough house style shenannies, but Robert use to go home on the weekends and would return with two bottles of Coke, some Wine Gums and a malt loaf under his arms. There would be a scramble for his goods. All of the kids would, in their typical way, consume in about 50 seconds consume the 4 litres of Coke, the packet of Wine Gums and then boot the malt loaf down the hall like Brazillian children playing with a rag ball. Eventually, Robert would find ways to stash his cola and alcohol-free treats but the malt loaf would always end up the same way: in the urinal at the end of the corridor. This collective of spacker-bullies eventually gave up with their designs on his other food, but it became a ritual to try and get the Malt Loaf from his tightly clenched fingers while he was asleep. From time to time when arsing about on the school field, someone would eventually get a sticky, pissy malty loaf rammed down the back of their blazer.

Tomorrow: The Unsworthian Helicopter.

That's so sad. I don't know which is worse - the nasty bullies, or the wicked waste of malt loaf. I bloody love malt loaf, me, and wasn't home-educated or a special.

You can buy it in packs of two slices, pre-buttered.

Sometimes I wish TMO was real, so when dance margerita came back from the shop I could wrest the malt loaf from her hands and chuck it in the urinal at the end of the corridor.

I like malt loaf too, but that's not really going aid its cause is it. I prefer it to be lightly toasted with a nice blob of margarine on it.

Ro-land wasn't actually that fat, was he. Not compared to the bloated tubs of lard one sees eating crisps on the bus at 8 in the morning these days.

i am full of cold and the shop didnt have any malt loaf- it is a rubbish shop which sells pre- bagged broken biscuits and polish versions of laughing cow cheese called 'spaszbye pyw!' and barbie pink taramasalata. i would have thought it was exactly the kind of place you might find soreen but no, apparently not. also, after a week of wearing wellies without full length socks all the skin is falling off my legs and im covered in sores. no maltloaf, full of cold, weeping, flaking legs, holiday over for another year: i feel as if life is mocking me, basically. it is therefore little wonder that i am looking at that photo of roland browning and feeling that not only is there a striking physical resemblance between us, but that also w are in some way spiritually akin.

Ro-land wasn't about being fat, though, was he. It was more a case of personality disorder - the inability not to be a bit crap.

He unfailingly failed to engage with whatshername - the one who called him Ro-land. Was it Faye? I forget.

I never really thought of him as fat. But he was, I suppose, yeah.
