The sad thing is that while we are scoffing people are probably signing up. It is well known that those who see themselves as part of 'the moneyed establishment' have more money than common sense - the 10,000 'exclusive' places will probably be snapped up.
By the same people who would pay $1,000 for a fucking omelette.

at least with a $1000 omelette, you get an omelette that's (presumably) worth something, due to the ingredients and the chef and the overall experience of eating it. There's something reckless and hedonistic about it, but you are buying a legitimate experience, and unique experiences often are expensive. But an email address can never be reckless or hedonistic, and could hardly be described as an experience.
I've got sympathy with the £85 sandwich, $1000 omelette and all that kind of thing. It's not purely about status, there is a degree of bona fida luxury there. If I had enough money then I'd probably indulge. But an email address at $400 a month... I don't see it. It's not really rock and roll.

Maybe it's a joke, or a bet, designed to prove the adage 'a fool and his money are soon parted'. And if it's not, I bet he hasn't got very many sign-ups, if any. All the 'press' links he's posted just refer to press releases he himself has posted on the web. I'd be willing to bet nobody has signed up everevereverever. Nah I don't think so - if you look at the imagery of the site I can't see it appealing to those people at all. It's all very stuffy, very 'old boys' type vibe. There's nothing to suggest it would appeal to the fashion conscious, hipper-than-thou socialite. It's seems mroe aimed at the businessman; more Patrick Bateman than Nathan Barley.
I agere with London - I'd be suprised if one single person had gone for it. The kind of person they seem to be pitching towards is surely the sort who's going to ask "What extra value to I get for my money", and if the answer's "none, literally none, except that some people can't afford it"... well who's going to go for that? At least with the omlette or the sandwich you can explain where the money's going. This is just stupid.
