Dunkirk - That Chris Nolan does a good film doesn't he? Proper war film like the ones I grew up with in the 70's. And that 'tick-tick-tick' and the music driving your adrenaline throughout just add to the wow. Better than Saving Private Ryan by a country mile.
Baby Driver. Saw this last night, and it's on again now. It's an Edgar Wright outing and he did Spaced, and Spaced is the way up there on the list of things of a televisual variety that makes my heart swell. Baby Driver does just that too. It's just bloody marvelous, with a suitably stunning soundtrack, silliness abound, stellar cast and just gives you a jaw-ache watching it as I found myself smiling so hard throughout as it's that damn entertaining. Love, love, LOVE this film!
I, Olga Hepnarová - this I have mentioned on another thread. It's a dark Czech film about the true story of the titular Olga who was a much troubled youth in 1960's communist Prague who ended up driving a truck through a crowd of people waiting for a tram. Have I spoilt it for you already? No I don't think so - there was a lot more to it than that. Shot in black and white it's a graphic account of a young woman's struggle with her mental health, her sexuality and really shows well how although her crime was vile, she ultimately was a victim of her illness, the lack of support and the abuse of those around her that drove her to snap. It's on Netflix in the US so may be available in other regions so keep an eye out.

Hurm. I wasn't that impressed with Baby Driver. As a kind of could-I-do-a-film-like-this idea, I think it's a proof of concept. It seems to me that Edgar Wright wondered whether he could call a film after a Paul Simon song and make it All About The Music, and about cars obvs, and he wrote a script entirely on that premise. I don't do film criticism very well but here goes:
1. Tone:- I think it's very inconsistent. Sections of it are lighthearted and fun, but there were some truly horrible moments in it that were a lot darker than the rest of it gave you any preparation for (like the abuse of his mother). A film that wants to be a romp shouldn't have properly nastystuff in it, and a film that wants to be a proper drama shouldn't try to be 'fun'. For all their shitness this is something that films like Fast & Furious understand - you need to know what your film's trying to do.
2. Character: it is entirely inconceivable that Kevin Spacey's character - previously demonstrably very unpleasant - would have such a melty-soft heart that he essentially sacrifices his life for Baby and his bint. Who, incidentally, would be unlikely to still be around by the time Baby completed his prison sentence.
3. Sorry, but the indestructible-madman thing?
That's not to say I don't think it's clever. The driving's spectacular and the music is great. The music-plus-driving is fantastic. I just don't think it's a good film because it doesn't work as a film.

I done saw IT last weekend and it is....preeety preeeety preeety good. Definately better than the mini series. Sorry Tim Curry, but Bill Skarsgård is a talented lad. It has enough jumps, creepiness and decent CGI to make it worth the modern update. I enjoyed it. 8 out of 10 spookyboos.

I did ever so enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two. It was satisfying, character-driven, emotional and looked great.
I wanted to see Letters From Bahgdad because I have a massive crush on Gertrude Bell. But I didn't because nine poun for a cinema ticket is beyond the current budget. So I read her biography instead.
I was not excited about Wonder Woman because I grew up in the 80s with Ripley and Sarah Connor and I am fully aware that women can be action heroes.
I am more or less wetting my pants with excitement at the prospect of Thor: Ragnarok.

I went to see IT at the cinema and it was very well done. He is great at being bloody creepy. Plenty of jumps and all round disturbing shit, I agree it was better then the mini series.
Dunkirk was also good, glad it was only short as it was really tense the whole way through.
Watched a couple of good Netflix films too.
Death Note I liked. Was a good Saturday night film while enjoying a glass or 2 of vodka. I haven't seen the original and didn't know anything about it before watching so maybe that helped. Who doesn't love a teenage slight horror flick.
Then there was the succinctly named I Don't Enjoy My Place In This World Anymore. Bit of a mouthful but pleasantly surprised by it. I like finding random independent films and this has that feel about it. Woman gets annoyed at all the knobs in the world being rude, unfair and selfish and decides she has had enough. Her weird neighbour helps her get back at the world a little. It's strange but good.

Banana, I keep thinking I should check out Death Note as well. We're currently watching a documentary on the a whistleblower on netflix. Quite good. A Good American...that's the name of it.

I watched The Hitman's Bodyguard yesterday and it was better than expected. It helps that I love Ryan Reynold's brand of snark, and he's not tough on the eyes. The banter between him and Samuel L Jackson is fast and funny. The movie is just under 2 hours but felt like no time had passed, it's well paced. The big action set pieces are pretty good.
In summary, it was a predictable, but funny romp of a film.

T:R may be the only Marvel film that interests me. I've just about found myself done with that whole universe of stuff, same story again and again and again. I've set aside my own pique alert for if they ever do Galactus as he appears in the comics, or a straight up adaptation of Secret Wars, but the rest is just dull.
Thor, though, that movie looks, as the kids say, lit as fuck.

Saw IT last week. We don't go to the cinema often these days, but it was well worth it. Plenty of humour to go with the expected creepy clown bits.

Watched The Greatest Showman. It was ok. Some good choreography. All the songs sounded the same, and I'm not sure if that's because they were singing the same song over and over. Costume design was really good.
