Apparantly there is a 'real' issue somewhere in here in that some of these young hoodlums use hoodies, caps etc. to escape detection on CCTV, as well as using them to try to look hard (but duh! - a ban on hoodies is really going to make a difference here). But I really wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry when I saw this gigantic stool of a headline on The Express this morning. I honestly can't tell whether anyone's seriously proposing a ban on hoodies. I mean, is this really what some people are suggesting? Sure, a group of yoofs on a street corner wearing 'street' clothes can be intimidating. But I'd be a lot more scared if they were naked.
On Mask's link to the Burberry pub ban thing - that's completely different in my book. I hate door policies in general, but if I ran a pub and it had to have a door policy, the Burberry brigade would be first against the wall. I mean, the whole 'no trainers' rule which is thankfully becoming a rarity was so ill-conceived as to be untrue - actually encouraging townie scummers into your pub. So at least they're targetting the right 'group' of clothes, even if door policies are generally stupid.

it's a shame that we can't kill or at least geographically isolate these people so that they don't frighten or disturb us anymore. I'm sick and tired of seeing drunken louts in their cheap designer knock-offs, shouting and screwing in my town. They make me feel ill.

I have been looking for a hooded cape like the one wot Obi Wan is wearing. I can't find one anywhere. I think I'd like the autumn green or brown with an oak leaf clasp and then I could look like a Lord of The Ring, or a hobbit. I would have thought loads of people would be wearing them. I saw some nancy boy with one in Kindom of Heaven just the other week. A black one would be nice, for round the house, and that kind of thing. Maybe in the bedroom too and I'd paint me willy all violet and pretend I was a jedi. I think I'd like a blue silk one for nights out and then I can walk into pubs and drop the hood whilst looking all secret agent and mysterious

I wear loads of hoodies, and am as scared of the chavs as the next person. I wear hoodies for the comfort factor, not the fashion statement, and nearly always have the hood down anyway. Only if it is cold or rainy does it go up.
What about hoods on coats for those of use who prefer coats to umbrellas? Are we going to be told that we eaither learn to use a brolly without poking our eyes out or we have to get wet?
Hoodies tend only to be a mark of warning when combined with jogging bottoms tucked into socks. An ok look for a cyclist, but they usually untuck when they lock up the bike...

I think it's an identification issue. Banning hooded tops and baseball caps in public places like Bluewater mean that those who might engage in bag-snatching, 'happy-slapping' or shoplifting will not be able to prevent their ugly mugs from being captured on CCTV.
As for the newspaper front page Ben posted, I was more disturbed by the fact that the top section is occupied by those two nonentities Titmus and Loos, and their appearing in yet another shite reality TV show.
In fact, nothing could much worse that being happy-slapped in the street before returning home only to find a lazy-eyed bint and a pig-wanker screeching at you from your television.
I was in Le Touquet today and everything was so pleasant, laid-back and relaxed. No irritating bastards in hooded tops. No chav single mothers commanding double-width baby buggies. Clean streets. Where the staff at the bank are polite, and don't need to be protected by a screen of thick perspex. Where you can get two dozen fresh oysters for 12 Euro.

I realise points 2 and 3 are pretty incidental to the discussion, by the way. But point 1 suggests that hoodies are primarily, or originated as, a "black youth" fashion. I certainly get the impression this is where it came from (and probably from the US before that) though of course these days hoodies are not exclusive to young black men. I do often wonder at the fact that I've never seen a young black guy with an umbrella, but then perhaps I don't see young white guys with them either.
The cats thing is just a sidenote really. I do know one black woman who owned a cat, because unfortunately I was there when it was run over, but I wonder if cats are more a "white thing".

Hmm. I must say, I have never seen a young black male carrying an umbrella. As for protecting themselves from the rain, they do that by malingering around bus shelters.
The takeaway chicken thing might be true, but you have probably developed that theory from the fact that fried chicken is a black staple in the US.
I don't know any black people that well, and I don't know if they keep cats. I can't see it, somehow - can you? In fact, 'dangerous dogs' aside, I don't see them having pets. Can you imagine young Leroy, after an afternoon of hooded 'happy-slapping', coming home to feed his pet hamster? Er, no. It just seems wrong somehow.

Well, you're certainly not shying away from stereotypes there. The point about chicken was what made me preface my suggestions "is this racist", because I believe it is considered part of an old and offensive portrayal of black people in the US -- along the lines of watermelon. However, round my way it does seem that young black people are often walking down the street with a box of "Kansas Fried Chicken".
I think it's quite possible that certain types of pets go with certain ethnic groups, and that keeping cats hasn't crossed over to black and Asian British communities.

I can't speak for blacks, but from what I know of the two main Asian groups in the UK I agree cats are not popular on account of their being associated with evil. Muslims just don't keep pets generally, while Hindus think it wrong to keep something that might have been the grandmother in a previous life. Imagine feeding your grandmother Whiskas - o the shame! That said, in Sri Lanka everyone I knew/know has pets - but then most of these people had/have European attitudes anyway.

I came across Happy Slapping for the first time about a year ago. A friend of mine works for a West London council, helping recidivist kids get back on the straight and narrow. The kids he's been working with have been texting him their own Happy Slap clips, just to prove how unsuccessful his job is. A nice way to highlight his failure.
One particularly nasty example features a gang of little fuckers running into shot and clubbing a young woman over the head with the heavy end of a traffic cone. I agree with what Benway says about Happy Slapping being the closest thing to snuff most of us have experienced. The authentic violence of the Road Cone Crew captured on digital video make this clip one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen.
