Whether he's a good guy or not, it's amazing how many apparently normal people are so excited about this Great Day For Freedom, or whatever they're calling it.

I mean, you wonder exactly what the guy is being expected to do. Bring world peace? Not even Jesus managed that. Save us all from financial crisis? Where would the money come from to do that? Just save the USA and don't worry about everyone else? America is in way too deep to be able to cut itself off.

I can't really see anything changing at all, except he might not go out and start any new wars, for a couple of months anyway.

Feelgood factors only last for a few days, then it'll just be back to the usual bogged down politics, reinterpretation of election promises, over-the-top foreign policy and disillusionment.

I don't think that's Obama's fault or anything. It's just the way it is.

But it'll be nice to wave goodbye to GWB. That should be the big celebration today.

President Obama,

You should not smoke when you are president! There are simple reasons. Because you will die by smoking, and then you will not be president! But I want you to be.

Your No. 1 fan,

David Lopez, age 7

Does this kid know something?

quote:
Dear Obama family,

When you move into the White House, turn on the heater so it won't be cold. You could also take hot baths in your new antique bathtubs. Or you could make hot tea and coffee. When I moved to a new house, I helped my dad. He took apart a chair and I carried pieces of it. If I were your helper when you move in, I could move everything! Have a nice day being the first family.

Nazrawit Dessie, age 7

Financial crisis over:

quote:
Dear President Obama,

If I want anybody to be president, it's me. I would clean the streets and give myself more money. I would also give everybody a piece of a Reese's candy. Every homeless guy or girl would get $50 for help and a place to sleep for the winter. My family and other families would get free gas for our cars; single people with no kids would have to pay. The money would come from copying other bills. The $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills would be copied one thousand times.

The paper would not come from trees but from hardened glue. The way to make it is by mixing water and glue together so that it looks like paper. You then put it in a fire, then let it cool in the freezer.

Weslie Jackson, age 12

Did he make his historic journey to the White House, on a historic train. Did he walk historically up the steps and open the door in an historic manner, before walking down the corridor, going into the guest toilet and taking an historic shit? Truly this is a historic day for The World.

Why not? Do you not think that there was substantial, identifiable change from when Dubya took over from Clinton (for example environmental policy, foreign policy and a move from financial surplus to deficit)? And for that matter a big change from Reagan/Bush to Clinton? Given past form surely it's more likely that a shift in political party will make a difference. If the opposition moves in to the white house and nothing changes that would be unprecedented.

To be honest, there's an argument to be had that things are already different, just because of the atmosphere of hope. Froopyscot wrote quite a passionate post upon the democrat victory about how it no longer felt like questioning the actions of the government labelled you an unamerican traitor, which even on its own sounds like a shift in the national consciousness. Maybe you just meant "my taxes won't go down" or "the value of my house won't go up", but it already seems like it's made some difference to a lot of the people that live in America. I also think that Bush Pt. II became such a world-wide figure of hate that just getting him the fuck out of there is going to affect the way other countries deal view, and consequently deal with, America.

I've already bought the commemoration book of the inauguration. I'm also going to arrange to have Obama and his family freeze dried and vacuum packed so the history of the moment isn't ruined by aging and fucking it up.

I find that whenever there is some kind of mass historic event, I'm forced to try and ignore it, if only to defy the 'authority' that I falsely perceive. For example, there's a thing at work where people are watching this swearing in thing at 5pm tonight, together. While part of me would like to go to soak in the atmosphere and be seen to be normal, the more powerful urge is to reject it completely, simply on the basis that if I were to go, I'd be taking part and joining in. Basically accepting that I want to be a part of a social event, which in turn demonstrates something...that I can't define... that I feel compelled to resist. Like it's demonstrating weakness or something. Maybe I (pathetically) like to think of myself as a lone wolf rather than a pack animal. Not sure. Perhaps it's a fear of being in a social situation that I can't control. Maybe I don't want to be seen to enjoy the company of crowds, and be a part of them. I certainly spend most gigs in a semi-fury as a result of all the other people around me. Just the sight of the back of somebody's head is enough to provoke anger. The backs of people's heads seem to embody a kind of lack of physical awareness, a sense that for everybody in the world, they are the centre of it, and they are only dimly aware of other people as being anything other than a set of parameters.

Anyway, this knee jerk anti-social tendency is probably the reason why I haven't had any real success in most areas of my life + personal development.

Sorry, anyway. I don't feel very excited about the swearing in, but it's hard not to have a slight sense of optimism.

Yeah, the irony there is that the majority of people feel the same way, but you'd never know because they all stay away. You're part of a huge pack of very discrete wolves.

I see myself as less of a lone wolf figure and more of a hero/ leader. Consequently I enjoy crowds as they are necessary for providing the level of adulation and respect to which I am entitled.

Have these wolves no sense of history? It's no wonder they've broadly died out in mainland Europe with that lack of appreciation for major Historical events. I'm currently enjoying a historic Pret a Manger black Americano, and have made careful note of everything that's happened around me in order to be able to fill in my unborn children as to every aspect of where I was on this, most historic, of Historic days.

I suppose that both the hero and the lone wolf are superior positions to assume. I think that also I would like to be regarded with respect, to be celebrated even, but the problem is that this requires constant public performance, something that I'm not good at. The lone wolf - the rejection of the social - is just a response to this dilemma.

Loads of clowns who had never voted before signed up and ran out to the polling stations to cast their vote for no other reason than because this guy iz blacke. Or sort of blacke.

These people seem to think that Obama will has magicke blacke wand and half blacke unemployment, reduce the number of blacke people on death row, and make basketball the national sport. Or something.

When they realise this educated, cosmopolitan member of the Washington liberal elite has less in common with them than even George W. Bush, the fantasy will come to a sudden end.

"But I tort da brotha Barack wuz gonna git ma nigger off from death row..." Doh.

Meanwhile, Obama will be pushed and pulled around by the hidden hands that really moves American politics, and will be no different from his predecessors - no matter how hard he may try.

No need to be insulting, mask. You just need to see all those interviews of southern black people to see that they truly believe that Barack Hussein is some sort of magician who can solve all their ills.

And that somehow he is like them.

Even discounting deliberate errors like blacke, that's pretty poor. Half/halve. Words missing. What's that 'has' doing in there? What's this cretin with the writing skills of a child doing mocking the way other people speak? A dreadful mess.

If you're going to deploy cliche, at least try not to mix and match. 'Heal all their ills', or 'solve all their problems'. You wouldn't ask someone to "heal a problem", would you? Come to think of it you might.

Well, one could argue that you are just as wrong as I am Thorn. "Heal all their wounds" would be more accurate here. On reflection, if I had decided to not tap away for ninety seconds and then hit "Add Reply" I would have edited me comment to "cure all their ills".

Though I think we are digressing a little here.

I'll be watching as much as I'm able, between meetings. The company IT group sent out a note yesterday evening admonishing everyone against watching the inauguration online for fear of taking down the company's network, so watching live at my desk is officially not going to happen.

It looks like I'm going to be able to steal a wifi signal from the hotel across the street and watch it on my phone. Yay for me.

As for celebrating? This morning I had a bit of a chuckle at the expense of a yahoo in a pickup truck which was plastered with McCain-Palin stickers. True to form, he was driving slowly and holding up traffic. Not really celebration, though. Mild gloating perhaps.

But I do think that a change in administration can make a difference. I think the statements already made by numerous foreign heads of state speak to that fact, there's a feeling that after eight years of bullheadedness, Washington may finally be willing to act as a diplomatic partner rather than a cowboy dictator. And that's to our benefit here also: acting like a global bully gets us absolutely nowhere.

Why do Americans always bang on about "Freedom" though, as if they are the only place that has it? I'm in Germany at the moment and there's loads of Freedom here.

Fair enough, I can't think of any other examples, but there probably are some.
