So come on TMO - where you all at - Friday is inane chatter day, so let's have it!
Wearing: Usual Docs and Black 501's, Sankt Pauli Polo shirt
Eats: Curry/Italian fusion for lunch - concoction I knocked up last night
Listening: To the Radio lots - mainly 6 music, but at 11 I have to switch it off as there is some berk so not right for that station who comes on, so now its total rock and currently we are listening to Tool
Watching: Got my sky box a bit more reliable so last night watched Mock the Week and the BBC's Mitchell and Webb look - not a patch on Peep Show
Weekend: - Not sure yet. Will definately be calling my Dad who has been very unwell and had to go have a large cancerous lump removed from his bladder this week. Also apparently, when I get home I should have my house back as my 'flatmate' of the last three months I believe is returning to the US today on my orders - 6 months ago I was so full of hope it would all work out, the last 2 and a half months I'v just been wanting her out - amazing how someone can change so drastically in just a couple of years. Still maybe I can get the house cleaned ready for my lovely new flatmate who I hope will be moving in soon. Would hope beer would be in the equation, but it's that time of the month again.
Wearing: Black shirt, camel coloured trousers. Boots.
Eats: Not sure - haven't looked at my sandwiches yet.
Listening: New Clutch album Strange Cousins From the West. The packaging is really, quite extraordinarily beautiful. Musically... Ocativia summed it up best with "It's definitely a Clutch album". Doesn't seem to be their A-game, but I thought that abotu Blast Tyrant, and now it's one of my favourites. So who knows!
Watching: Still hammering the freebie Lovefilm subscription. Dead Man Walking last night. Barely laughed once.
Weekend: Off to that London for the weekend. Staying in East Dulwich for a few days. Not sure what's planned for us - could mainly be sitting around indoors saying "well then." and trying to remember what we all talked about when we were at university and our lives were vaguely similar.

Why did aussie fans of Hayley-off-of-Home-&-Away's boyfriend chant Gary Glitter songs at him?
Last Weekend
Greasy fish and chips on beach at Bognor Regis, accompanied by huge and vicious gulls of sea. Gypsy Lee still in shed by mini golf course. Most arcade machines unchanged in 25 years. Perplexing, explicit key rings in the shape of small genitalia available for purchase on beach.
Dropped in to Heston's Little Chef at Popham on way home. Watched triplane land. Ate Jubilee Pancakes. Racist toilet sang "Yes, we have no bananas".
Issac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul Cymande - The Message Dr Alimentado - The Best Dressed Chicken In Town Sun Ra - Nuclear War Cornershop (feat. Rowetta) - Wop The Groove Ensemble Modern - Music For 18 Musicians [all on Spotify]
Watching:
Psychoville Supersizers
Weekend: Whatever
Reading:
Those Malcolm Gladwell sociology/psychology books - The Tipping Point, Blink and Outliers. I'm sure quite a lot of it is just his interpretation of various statistics and experiments, but he's an excellent storyteller and it's all compulsive reading and, er, thought provoking.

Watching - Been watching Flight of the Conchords last few weeks. It's been "good" but nowhere near the level of the first series.
Listening - Donwloaded some Apolcalyptica and listening to that. It's pretty good.
Finally got around to setting my xbox up so it plays through my stereo and the sound is so much better. I don't know why I didn't do it ages ago.
Weekend. I'm being threatened with a trip to "Babies R Us" I don't want to go. I'd like to watch cricket all weekend really.
Eating. I'm planning on getting a bit experimental in the kitchen and want to try some molecular gastronomy so am ordering things like Sodium Alganate and Calcium Chloride so I can attempt stuff like Carrot Caviar.

It's best if neither of you go. These types of places are vile. The whole thing is geared towards a kind of "Can you really afford not have one of these?" psychological attack, and most of the stuff is useless, overpriced plastic shit. For example, £35 for what is essentially a bucket. The kitchen sink that already exists in every home provides precisely the same functionality as that.
What items of value can you possibly get from these places? It'll only make you both either miserable or broke. Just wait for people to give you all the stuff you need.

A trip to Mothercare makes me incredibly angry - evil marketing men preying on people's worries about doing The Best for Their Little Gift From Heaven. 'Texture' balls so that your Little One can understand what nipply plastic feels like for £4.99. Dedicated triple-storey changing tables that are just hideous plastic trollies with holes in. Excruciatingly 'cute' this that and the other. Avoid these shops like fury. People will give you everything you really need as well as forty-seven stuffed animals you don't need.

Well, I'm resigned to the fact that I'm going to be a bad parent anyway as this is my first one. It's like the first time you ride a bike, you're never going to be Lance Armstrong straight away, so you just try out some different tactics see what works and what doesn't and modify your tactic for the next one.

Even though it is much lighter than a fully grown adult, you still can't make it wings out of feathers and wax and get it to fly like Daedalus

The trick to being a good parent is the same trick to feeling like a successful adult. It's all about the standard you set yourself. For example, I feel like a great dad because my only yardstick for success is that my daughter continues respiration. As long as she's alive at the end of each day, then I consider that day a success, regardless of how much other permanent physical or psychological damage has been inflicted.
Yes, she may be down a couple of fingers and an eye, but how many of us are in the exact same physical condition as when we were born? She may now have a shaking, vomiting fear of kitchen equipment, but that's just the kind of idiosyncracy that adds colour to one's personality.
If anyone tries to tell you this is bad parenting, you can just roll your eyes and say "I think I know how to look after my own child thank you very much". You can also win any argument, no matter how spurious, with the line "You'd understand If you had kids of your own". You'll be a parent soon, everything you do will be Right, and everything anyone else does is potentially an outrageous intrusion into the rights and safety of your precious child. It's fricken' sweet.

I've just done an online grocery shop and was asked to purchase some maternity bag 'essentials'. These were one pack of ten non-slip elastic hair bands and one pack of six bottles of lemon Lucozade.

Yeah, if you set out to create a wonderful human being your setting yourself up to fail. They've got you and your partner's genes, just try not to let them kill themselves or do anything too monumentally stupid. That's as far as you can be expected go with nature and nurture. There are all sorts of other things that intrude on a kids development that you can blame for fucking them up. "I knew we should never have sent them to that school!" "I blame those reprobates you hung around with when you were six!" "Oh, you would insist on eating Calippos!" So, yeah, keep them away from whirring machinery and no-one can fucking touch you.

I think first-time parents are better parents. By the time you have the second, you are too jaded and tired to really invest yourself that much anymore*.
*not that this applies to me of course. I continue to hand-make toys, invent games and cook elaborate meals for my two.

The thing is, do kids really need stimulus? I reckon most of them would be happy with a blanket and a plain white room with a very bright fluorescent bulb on 24hours a day.
Maybe a cardboard box as well. Kids love cardboard boxes, cuh, little blighters, you spend £2.45 on a present and all they're interested in is playing with the cardboard box. Bastards.

And paint chips, McDirts, you forgot the paint chips. You can't expect to leave them without anything to eat, can you?

WEARING: Black "Rock is dead and paper killed it" tshirts by Threadless, camolflage Jack and Jones shorts
EATING: Club sandwich with pastrami, cheese, onions, olives, pickles, tomato, coleslaw and mustard.
LISTENING: The La Roux debut and Grey Britain from Gallows.
WATCHING: Terminator Salvation, which was shit. I'm pretty sure if you built a cyborg killing machine you'd use a lightweight titanium alloy which would be non magnectic - But I digress...
WEEKEND - I might buy Tiger Wood 10 for the PS3, go to the park with the kids and will spend today drying off and lazing after 2 hours swimming this morning..
READING: Still going with Richard Dawkins's The GOD Delusion which I like to leave on my desk to piss of the Jesus Fish wearers...

My favourite thing of his. I love the stuff about the IRA being "Good, British terrorists. They didn't want to be British, but they were. And as such they couldn't help but assume some of the characteristics of Britishness...".

WATCHING: Enjoying New Tricks. Good to see older actors working regularly and being entertaining.
WEEKEND - Cleaning house and packing ready for Monday trip down to ma-in-law and then a week with my two kids and then bringing the first grandson up to me. Second grandson coming the week after my lass has been to see me.
READING: some Japanese guy in translation. Not sure what to think yet. First novel was OK, though I think the translation let it down a bit. About to start the second. Been reading Secret Scripture too; nice prose but seems too slow.
Congratulations BM and Mrs BM.
How's Herbs getting along? Anyone know?
