Anybody done a ghost walk, or a walking tour of London? I've been on the Jack The Ripper walk, which was suitably timed so by the time you got to the last few spooky deaths it was dark, and the streets didn't feel particularly safe, but I did actually enjoy it, which I wasn't expecting. Last weeks Time Out had a feature about haunted London, and I'm a sucker for ghost stories, so felt myself tempted again to do a walk.
So, anyone done a walk, in London or otherwise? Was it worthwhile?

I picked up a flyer in a London hotel last year that read:
A DRINK AND A WALK WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES
It then went on to detail all the things you'd see and be told about during the evening, looked good until I spied at the bottom of the flyer in small print:
DRINK NOT INCLUDED
So just a walk then - bah.

I did one of these. It was ACE. It centred around the St Paul's area, and did such brill things as go into a pub with the Actual Cells of Newgate Prison in the cellar. The narrator told loads of spooky stories, some of which she made up I'm sure, just to add to the atmos.

Funny you should mention it, but I've been looking into this recently as I was thinking of just that: Doing a Ghost Walk - as the guide. I haven't come up with any firm plans yet, but there's a few local areas to me that would be ideal and with a bit of research and mild theatrics would go down a treat. I was thinking either Victorian or Georgian costume.
My next step is to actually go on a couple of walks first - probably Nottingham and York (I've heard they're quite good).
Some of the stories I've heard about other walks suggest there's an awful lot more excitement that can be injected into what can possibly be a bit of a "dry" mobile lecture.

I did something similar while in Amsterdam actually. The tour was given by an older woman and ended up being mostly about dams, ugly buildings (one which she particularly disliked was apparently designed to look like a ship captured mid-sinking) and prostitutes. She seemed to have some admiration or at least reverence for the 'ladies', who she repeatedly stressed were savvy businesspeople, and took some pleasure in mocking a few men who were hovering near red-lit windows as if waiting for their courage to kick in. It was like having a play-by-play announcer at our personal disposal.
