In the occasionally okay book, The Liar, by Stephen Fry, there is the suggestion that life is something like a series of hills but with one peak, to which you are either approaching or travelling away from.

If this is the case, do you feel like you're about to hit your peak, are sitting pretty atop it, or rolling down the hill?

I'm at the bottom of the mountain, covered by boulders, waiting for death's sweet release.

I think I'm in the same ravine as ralph, only a bunch of jolly hikers are chucking apple cores on my prone corpse and singing rambling songs* as they tramp gleefully all over me.

*not quite sure what they would be, but definitely awful.

What I object to is the colour of some of these wheelie bins and where they are left, in some areas outside all week in the front garden.

As long as I'm still writing my first novel I reckon I'm still climbing towards that peak. I'd say there's a pretty good chance I'll still be crawling my way up when my frail body finally gets blown off that ridge near the top, sheets of scribbled-on A4 fluttering around in the wind.

After a brief wander up an easy bit of path, I'm currently pacing around a few hundred metres from the bottom, hoping someone else will get round to building a ski lift.

One Mojito, two Gin and Tonics, Three Bacardi Lime Sodas, and a couple of pints of Stella please.

I'm about halfway up, I reckon, having barged my way past the rocky ravine, past the loiterers, up up up and on to the toppermost of the poppermost - before turning round, seeing the view and remembering that I have a crippling fear of heights, and having to shuffle back down on my arse, back the way I came, snivelling and dribbling snot all the way.

...because that's the kind of guy you are.

Probably impossible to say. I mean, I'd obviously like to think that I was still on my way to a peak and glorious times lay ahead, but for all I know it could just be a slow grind into mediocrity and middle age. Maybe not even a slow downhill grind. I could get knocked off my bike on the way home, reduced to a vegetating blob, wanking and shitting into my pants for the rest of my life, waiting for someone to notice the difference.

Now that you've called me by name?
