The results of this drug trial 'accident' seem a bit grim. I've never done any drug trials, but was considering it as a way of raising a couple of grand quickly. I don't think this puts me off. If anything it's had the opposite effect, weirdly. I know that JhonJ is a vet of these things, but I was wondering if anybody else has tried it? Also, if it came down to it, and you were broke, would you do it? Would you be happy for somebody who you loved to go ahead and do it? Has this 'accident' caused you to change your mind?

Pissing Fire

As I said, I'd still give them a go. It sounds like there's a load of admin to get through, but if I find myself without work again (which could be as soon as next week), I'll probably sign up. A strange, unpleasant part of me thinks that if I do die, at least it will be an accident, and I'll already be in hospital so any pain or fear can be quickly relieved. And you know. It's thousands of pounds for laying in bed and pissing.

I knew a lot of people at university who used to do this, what with Cardiff being a major centre of research into the common cold. I think I considered it on occasion but was put off by things like not being able to drink for two weeks while the trial was going on. What a waste of two weeks that would have been.

I've been following that story quite closely, out of morbid fascination. It's quite incredible, the descriptions that are coming out about it. One of the most chilling bits of the BBC coverage is the article dealing with one of the guys who was on the placebo. He talks about how they all suddenly collapsed, tearing at their shirts and screaming that their heads felt like they were going to exlpode, and he was sat there, rigid with fear thinking it was going to happen next. That sent shivers down my spine.

I'd also quite like to see the pharmiscists' write up of the trial, presumably consisting of some sort of elaboration on "This didn't work".

Anyway, it's a bit of a shame, both for the people involved and for everyone else, as I gather this drug was supposed to cure cancer. Mind you, if the results they get off these mutants prove to be useful, then maybe that will aid a cure for cancer, and these people will have achieved more by lying under a ventilator than they would have in a lifetime of bar-work.

Do you think if they survive they'll get a little bit extra on top of the normal fee paid to then for taking part in the trial for being made violently ill ?

they'll probably tempt them back by offering £4000 to do more tests on them to see what happened.

I don't believe so. I think that if Benway agrees to do this, he'll have to sign some sort of waiver, freeing them from all liability in the event that they turn him into a mutant. Moreso, I mean.

I wouldn't do it; I'm too scaredy. I have a perfect mental image of the drugs trial described in that Stephen King book - the one where he comes out of it with The Sight or something - and someone plucked out their own eyes. Ever since then drugs trial and plucking out your own eyes have been inextricably linked in my mind. So. No.

There is something horribly fascinating about the case, though. My fingers keep crawling back to check for updates on their condition/ see if any of them have actually died. I'm starting to suspect myself of some kind of horrid fascination with newsworthy death, actually. I really did get far too excited about the Pope.

Ah yeah, I am always trying to get on cash-4-science trials! When reading about this on the way to work my main thought was oh, they have a testing place in North West London? That is handy, I will have to look it up.

I tried to get on the anthrax vaccine trial, but it got cancelled, I tried to get on the HPV vaccine trial but they wouldn't have me.

With regards to exploding head risk, I guess I have always just thought I would do my own research and be in a position to make an informed decision.

At the moment I get £25 a go to eat some food and test my blood sugar. Not a bad deal but after a heavy weekend it can be tough chokeing down a chicken tikka masala at 8 am on Monday morning.

Hmm...they don't have any future trials listed right now!

I used to work with a girl who had run trials before and apparently they were testing some antipsychotic drug on normal non metal people. And they all went mad and started fighting each other!

It's not all bad though. You might end up with pyrokinetic abilities, like the girl in King's Firestarter (played by ickle Drew Barrymore in the film):

I've been working in an abandoned ward all week. It is creepy as fuck. Apparently the company went bankrupt and so when a company goes bankrupt apparently they just stop what they are doing and walk out of the building without collecting $200. When a ward gets abandoned, it's important to throw sample jars all over the floor, spill swabs all over the place and open all the windows so that the curtains blow eerily. I have to favourite finds at the moment: the dracula tourniquet and the fridge still filled with piss and blood samples that have gone delightful colours. The rooms off to the side of the corridor are perfect for sliding back the window with a shudder and being prepared for a zombie face to leap put at you and paw the windows bloody.

I don't know what kind of test they did there but it involved not wearing shoes (incurs a fine, the poster on the wall says) and the toilet was locked with a big padlock (which also confused because you hardly go on a drug trial and then demand a shred of decency for pissing do you? - god)

On a cycling forum I frequent someone started a thread on Tuesday evening explaining methods he uses to raise money for going off on long cycle tours.

Suggestion 4:

quote:
Do a medical trial: There are loads of these going on all the time in London, all very safe as the trials a checked by an independent ethical committee before they start. They range from a few days up to around a month. To give you an example, I’m just finishing one off now where I’m in for a total of 4 weeks, with a gap of 2 weeks between each week at the hospital. For this I’m getting £3300. This is about 1.8 years on the road for me.

I once got paid £10 to taste some sausage rolls. Does that count?

It was great. A room of about 12 people, all sat at desks, laid out like an exam hall - except we had a multiple choice questionnaire about pastry, and tasty fillings.

I can thoroughly recommend being paid for these trials.

B-but these tests in the news were for anti-inflammatory drugs. Next thing we know they're being described as looking like the elephant man.

Well you know, these trials have been around for ages and I've never heard of anyone turning into the Elephant Man before. Which means out of all the thousands of trials done, this is a first. Its pretty good odds really. If anything, I'd been more prepared to do it now.

Also, it makes scenes like the one in Blade where Stephen Dorff swells up like a red marshmallow man far more believable.

Incidentally, it seems that the character played by Steven Dorff (Deacon Frost) shares the name of a gay porn star. Thank Christ my monitor doesn't face anyone.

When everything goes back to normal and testing starts again it'd be cool to sign up for a test and as soon as you've all had your shots and your sitting around chilling...

Done three clinical trials, on the prep shet it says "don't worry, we have a fully servied resusitation machine on standby!"

They didn't say anything about theme hospitalesque head deflators though. Apparently its made lolads of people sign up because they didnt know you could get a grand for doing stuff like this.

my market value has suddenly plummeted, fs.

I take a tablet.
It is not known to science.
My head explodes - SPLAT!

Held down by white-coats,
Injection in my buttock.
I don't want to die!

What did you say, doc?
"This is a cure for deafness"?
I can't hear a thing!

Liver turns to sludge,
Brain does cartwheels in my head.
Was it worth the cash?
