Got any?
I was reading somewhere that it's cool to eat sushi rolls with your fingers instead of fiddling about with chopsticks... Is that true?

rolls are 'okay' to eat with your fingers, yes
other tips: :- it's rude to rub your chopsticks together as though sharpening them :- it's rude to use chopsticks to skewer food :- it's rude to swear really loudly, particularly if your face is stuffed with food and bits start flying out everywhere :- it's rude to punch the sushi chef in the face :- it's rude to take your own bacon and eggs to cook on the hibachi :- baked beans are right out as well

To be honest with you New Way of Decay, I've only eaten sushi once in my life and that was takeaway from Waitrose or something. I don't live in a big metropolitan bustling city like you guys and so I guess in our country ways sushi isn't a necessity to be seen as a functioning part of society.
My opinion of the sushi was that it was "OK" and "more filling than I expected". I suspect my opinion would be elevated greatly if I actually ate sushi put together by a 93 year old japanese master with eyebrows down to his ears rather than a 17 year old work experience kid out the back of waitrose but at this time I can't give a definite answer as to my opinion of sushi.
I have nothing against sushi. I like fish, I like raw beef, therefore raw fish should be ok, but as I say I'm not prepared to wade in with a cast iron opinion at this time as upon trying sushi my opinion could be completely changed and then I would have to come on here and admit I was wrong and you would get my account changed from "Member" (as it may be when I finally try sushi) to "Person who lies about whether they like sushi" and I'm not sure I can risk having that happen to me.

Gold..... What is it good for? You can't eat it, you can't smoke it, yet everybody wants it.

I made sushi a few months ago at a sushi workshop with a real 100% genuine Japanese teacher! It's very tricky to make as all the sticky rice sticks to your fingers and the things you put in the middle fall out and the seaweed rips and you roll everything up crooked. Still tastes good though.

...though traditionally this is frowned upon! Japanese food is such a conundrum.
I'm definately going to be using the wasabi as that nukes the bacteria right? I don't want to mix it up with the soy sauce as I think this is the similar to getting dished up some really lovely English food and then dousing it with tomato ketchup.
Last time I think I had california rolls (typical n00b) and there was a green paste which was avocado, plus wasabi, soy sauce and I think there may of been a red sauce too?
I'm going to go for saké this time instead of kirin. I'm thinking I'll have it cold - is that ok?

quote:Sauces served with sashimi are very simple: typically soy sauce, wasabi, and sometimes lemon juice. Japanese people often mix wasabi paste directly into soy sauce when preparing dipping sauces for sashimi, which is generally not done when eating sushi. However, some purists denounce the practice of mixing wasabi into soy sauce, saying that this dilutes the sharp hot flavour of wasabi. A reputed motivation for serving wasabi with sashimi (besides its flavor contribution) is to kill harmful bacteria and parasites that could be present in raw seafood.

Word. re: the bacteria That's what the chef told me. Although with a quick Google search it appears to be mostly unproved. I did read something about Tabasco sauce being a good thing to add to food you're a bit dubious about as that kills bacteria so maybe it has some effect.
