ever been to a school reunion? I've been invited to one. I said I'd got but I'm quite scared at the prospect of being 16 again. I'm sure I'll end up just acting like i did when I was a kid. Kind of quiet and depressed. But I really would like to meet up with some old friends again, so I think I'll brave it even if I end up fleeing the bar in tears and getting my mum to pick me up. Right now I'm like, what do I wear? Who do I hang out with? How do I act around people who haven't seen me as an adult? Straight away I'm back there again.
Anybody been to one? How did it go? Would you go if you got invited?

We had a "reunion" during our first year at Uni, ie about 7 months after we'd left 6th Form. So most people were comparing the cost of drinks at their Union bars, and it wasn't that exciting.
I would go, because I'm nosy and want to hear about how other people have fucked their lives up, and see who's got fat and bald.

I'd definitely go to my secondary school reunion, if such a thing ever happened (probably won't). I had a good time there and while I'm still in touch with a lot of my friends from there, there are a few people I'd like to catch up with. Teachers, too. There are a few I'd like to say hi to again, people who were encouraging and spent a lot of time organising extra curricular activities for the kids. I'm told that it's gone downhill in recent years, which is a shame, so maybe it'd be depressing to see that.
The other place, I went to though... fucking hell... I can't see myself wanting to go back there except as some kind of masochistic journey into hate. The only reason I'd want to be back there would be to re-enact the end scenes of If...

I'd be curious to know if my perceptions of how other saw me - bit weird, swottish, too keen to be liked - were correct. If they weren't it would make me feel better, but if they were it would be too depressing to contemplate. So, all in all, I'd rather live in blissful ignorance. I don't see anyone from school any more, and haven't for about 10 years.

I happened to be back home when my 10 year high school reunion happened.
I went and got as far as the car park and whilst sitting smoking a cigarette (how I miss thee) and watching people I was forced to spend time with for 13 years who I haven't spoken to in 10 years walk through the doors of the stadium, I just couldn't be bothered.
So, I started my car and off I drove.
Then, a year later when I went home for my grandma's funeral, I went to a bar where a 'friend' from school was and we started chatting and he said that the reunion was as cliche as it could be with the old jocks trying to posture, snobs joining together, gossips going at it like it was study hall circa 1994... Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed I didn't go. My friends from school are the ones I still talk to today, everyone else was just 'there'.

The majority of people I was at school with seem to still live in the same town, so I see them about when I go and visit my mum. Obviously I pretend not to recognise most of them, although I couldn't resist a slightly smug hello when I ran into one of the scary girls with spiral perms and high-up ponytails working in the local petshop. I’m not quite sure why I was so smug - I was the one spending my holiday fitting a catflap.
Benway - you should have a good stack of vomiting in the bin/hangover stories handy for the occasion.

There'd also be the jolly old cliche of feeling like a failure compared to those with millions of lovely children. Even though they work in the same bank they started work in at 17 and I'm a high-flying London Media Twat.

I look back on school as a really terrible period of my life - I'd even go so far as to say that I don't think I really started living properly until I'd left. I mean: double physics ffs - what kind of crazy soul-death is that to be visiting on a 14yo?
The few people I got on with at school I've kept in regular contact with. Of the rest, there's probably about one or two individuals out of twenty years' schooling that I wouldn't mind seeing again. There were only a couple of decent teachers and one of them had a nervous breakdown.
I would skip the reunion, Benway. Why not re-watch King of Comedy for the excellent sequence that reminds us that no good can come of fantasies of vindication and revenge in a high school setting.

I used to watch Taxi - my parents with their lax morals, would allow us to sit up late and watch all kinds of stuff like V and Soap, which was always shown at about 10.30 in the olden days.
But I don't remember that one, sorry, ralph.

Funny. We have our annual school reunion in a couple of weeks' time. Despite the fact that I have more or less single-handedly written the alumni website (or perhaps because of it) I have not managed to make one of the big shindigs, keeping things down to the occasional small gathering up - though saying that the last of these was in the spring of 2001.
For the past three years the annual gathering has taken place I have either been out of the country or just plain busy, but this time I am available. I am still deciding whether to go or not; one of my best mates whom I am still in touch with will definitely be there, while another feels slightly uncomfortable at the thought of meeting people who might have beat the crap out of him back in 1984.
Should I go, TMO?
