I just put a network card in an old Compaq PC for my next door neighbour.

When I try and put the machine on the network and install the needed networking components it causes Windows 95 (yes I did say 95) to corrupt and become unbootable.
It will start in safe mode and then I can uninstall the networking components and reboot normally and all is fine.

I'm at a loss for why it is doing this, I mean the machine is a pile of crap and only has a max of 40gig of memory (Though I put 128 in it only allows 40 and reverting to the original 16 doesn't help either) and it's only for use by a 7 year old kiddie, but it'd be nice to get it on their network.

I'll put 98SE on over the top of 95 and try again for networking, but if anyone knows why the addition of a network card would kill windows please let me know..

Thanks all...

Probably is that... Arse, I'd hoped it was an easier one to fix..

Well, it'll have to wait till I get back from England then.

ONLY a max of 40gig of memory? What the hell is it doing running 95? [Big Grin]

I agree with jnhoj, it sounds as if it is IRQ... 95 was a complete bitch to install any sort of hardware because it almost ALWAYS conflicted somewhere. 98 was marginally better, and thank Christ for the NT engine and *true* plug and play when you didn't have to modify com ports, irqs, or memory addresses anymore.

If you can't figure out the coms/irq, I'd say 98SE is your best option... Not only will the hardware install work better, but you'll also not have such an old OS so some software pre-Neolithic age will work! [Wink]

Dozy sod bought the thing off a 'mate at work' for I think about 50 Euro (30 quid)..

he wants me to make it all OK and nice for his youngest but the machine isn't up to much and I've no time this weekend as I've got to pack and stuff for next week so he can wait till I get back.

I'll 98SE it and then see where we go from there..

Cheers you guys.
