Duh! That isn't a Windows XP problem, it's an Office problem.

Actually, I have shit to do today and can't be refreshing to ensure you do it properly!
- exit word - Click on Start - Run and type in %appdata% - open Microsoft\Templates folder - Rename each instance of Normal.dot to something else - restart Word
Failing that: Commands tab on the Tools -> Customize dialog. In the left box in that tab scroll down to "Built-in Menus" and you should see a choice for the "File" menu in the right box. Then you can drag that "File" up to the menu bar.
