The answer to this question should be googleable really, but I can't think of how to phrase it. I did find someone who had asked the exact same question, but no answer. TMO will save me.

I have a TV with AV inputs (one yellow video + red & white audio). I want to use this to listen to an mp3 player through the TV speakers.

The problem is that the TV only recognises the input when it detects a video signal. I've plugged a digital camera in, got the picture on the screen and then taken audio from the mp3 player - works fine. As soon as I unplug the camera, audio dies as well.

The question is, can I somehow fool the telly into thinking it's receiving a video signal? (i.e. Without leaving the camera plugged in all the time, obviously.) I've got plenty of spare yellow input cables which I could adapt, but what is actually being detected on that cable?

Really depends on the tv really, though I must admit it is a tad unusual to play an mp3 player through your tv - what model is it?

Yes, the model is a Goodmans LD1546WD. I have the manual and it just refers to video input, no reference to audio only.

The reason for wanting to use it this way is that my ex has an iPhone with audiobooks and BBC iPlayer and the like and wants better sound than the built in speaker. The telly is in the kitchen so it kind of makes sense to use the audio input and speakers rather than buying a separate iPhone dock or external speakers. It does sound fine when I set it up as described above, with the camera plugged into the video and the mp3 player into the audio, so that's what I want, but without the camera.

Presumably you're using the headphones socket on the iphone? Which is why there's no video out from the phone?

Are there any other outputs on an iPhone? Is it designed so you could watch movies that are stored on the phone, on a TV? You might be able to use a different output, that would give a video signal, even if it's just the song select menu that shows up on the phone.

Oh, and the answer to this is 'a composite video signal'.

I did try that, forgot to mention it, exact same symptoms... the SCART requires the video signal as well.

You might be on to something here. The other output/input is the USB port used for connecting and syncing with a computer. That might provide the right signal, if there was some kind of adapter on the market. But I suspect not. I shall google forthwith.

Yeah, it's that which I want to replicate. Was just wondering if there was a dongle/lash up of some kind which could do that, rather than leaving a camera permanently connected. I want to keep it neat and tidy, z'all.

Good god, Apple users are a bunch of fucking cretins aren't they? Look at this idiot:

quote:
The price is a little steep but when you compare the price of this pack to purchasing the parts individually (The AV lead) (An extra usb lead) (UK power adpater) (& the Euro power adapter) it's really not that bad, and Apple are not on their own for shipping goods without power adapters, I just suppose it's there way of making a little extra money off you!
Who the fuck responds that blithely to being ripped off? If you wanted to do the same thing with any other product you could pick up an unbranded lead for about £3. Not only does Apple charge ten times that amount, these imbeciles actually seem cheerful about paying it.

It is expensive for a cable.

but, WOW! The quality output is fantastic.
A compressed video format via composite? Yeah that would look fantastic, if your previous TV was 40 years old, and didn't have a screen.

But it's a white bit of wire, Thorn. White. You can't buy that kind of style down the market.

I don't totally understand. My iPhone came with a power adapter. It's always nice to have another one though.

I presume it's all built in to the one cable though, so you can simultaneously power the iPhone from the mains while you watch stuff on the telly, through the same connector on the phone. I presume. You might have to buy another cable to do that though, but as long as it matches and looks good I don't see the problem really.

I don't know. It just doesn't seem awfully clear whether it all one cable, or just a whole bunch of cables. If it's all seperate stuff then it seems a bit of a weird combination of bits. But who knows.

Looks like it doesn't even work properly...

quote:
Beautifully made and packaged. Wonderful small USB Power supply. Fine picture quality. However, it's flawed.

The volume control doesn't work, even though a nice sliding iPod style indicator appears on TV screen. Gotta be a bug/fault. Also I'd hoped to be able to pack just one cable for trips and use this for my audio to phono needs. But audio is only output for videos and photos (not for Podcasts or Music); so there's the workaround, play a slideshow!

Personally I'd just buy some speakers.

Anyway, Dang, aren't you like, a bit eco-warriorish? Using a television as a pair of speakers seems abit... wasteful and inefficient?

The morons don't stop:

quote:
I borrowed an AV Cable from a friend who purchased it somewhere other than Apple. Only got Audio from playing video playback and …Read moreno photo viewing. Dont bother doing this. Buy the Official Apple cables as they have a specific chip in them to allow full compatibiliey with iphone 3G. Works great, watch videos, view your photo slideshows and watch the iplayers from bbc etc. A Must have accessory for the Iphone 3G!! Top Marks!! All we need now is a wireless remote so you dont have to keep getting up to pause the film and play again!!
Jesus fucking christ, this dude is giving props to a device marketed out of pure cynicism. Now all he wants is a remote control to pause and play. He'll probably give the fucking thing ten stars if someone bothers to call him up on his iphone, interrupting his programme and has to fumble around the back of the TV to answer it. Good times.

I like how on that list it says 'Go to next track (or audiobook chapter), as though an audiobook is something other than a standard MP3 track. It reminds me of seeing MP3 players that boasted they 'play podcasts'.

For some reason you never see radios advertising that they 'play news programmes' as well as music or a cooking hob that is 'broccoli compatible'.
