Greetings from the Night Shift!

Yes whilst all you lucky sods are either imbibing vast quantities of Alcohol and illegal narcotics, fucking or sleeping I'm stuck here a tad frustrated with a wee issue with Illustrator CS4. Basically I have completed a design for a website I am building for someone, and the next stage it to create the slices of all parts to save as PNG's, then stitch them all together, probably with Visual Web Designer. Except Illustrator point blankly refuses to let me slice anything - every time I select the tool and move anywhere in the vicinty of my work all I get is an input inhibited icon (basically a red circle with a red diagonal stripe accross it - sort of road sign thingy)

I have tried bloody everything, its not a layer selection problem, and for some reason I can't flatten the whole thing to chop it up like a bitch. So I am kind of stuck now - anyone clever out there kind enough to put this plank in his place and show me where I am going on?
