Okay - so I went to see this and thought it was fantastic - brutal, raw, well acted (a little clunky here and there on the dialogue front) and just generally what bond should be like, especially if you've read a book, and then watched Roger Moore catatonicly fight a man with metal teeth and wondered what the..? (Moonraker was about a card game, wasn't it????)

Anyway, spoilers herein - the beautifully simple idea is that this is the film that removes the ego from the man, that makes him cold hard and the perfect blunt weapon for her majesty. With the first woman he loves saving his life and sacrificing her own with a payload for a terrorist orgainisation (Smersh or Spectre probably) thus making it all wonderfully personal from here on out.

Anyone else seen it yet? Thoughts?

I'm annoyed I have to wait another 7 days to see this - why the Dutch release is a week after the rest of the world I don't know. [Frown]

Glad you enjoyed it - It only goes to add to the good things I have heard about it.

I too thought it was excellent, and that Daniel Craig had the right combination of heedless thuggery and cocky king of the hill at the beginning, a persona which was tempered, refined and restricted by the end of the movie. I liked the lack of overt gadgetry, and some of the stunt work was truly eyepopping.

I have never really been a huge Bond fan, especially not Brosnan era, and this was a rollicking return to simply telling a good story about an engaging character without the reliance on cheesy one-liners - though there were indeed a few such, they seemed to grow naturally from the character as portrayed by Craig, a natural humour, rather than been dropped leadenly in by a scriptwriting consortium.

Go. And. See. It.

OK, I've just finished watching this...

Craig I warmed to, he looks very much like a chimpanzee but he played the orphan, early Bond very well indeed.

More thug than suave 00 agent for the most part but there is some great dialog and you do get a feel for the whole Bond back story, how he became what he is and what we know..

Great chase scenes, nice locations, reasonable story but I was left wanting more, I felt unresolved, something missing, an empty feeling somehow left unfilled by the ending (No spoilers here I say !)

I look forward to Craig’s No2; I want to see Bond develop as it were..

Oddly I watched this with OHMSS on in the background and there are some stunning parallels that can be drawn between the two..

Biggest letdown for me, and OK this may be a spoiler of sorts but, TOO MANY MOBILE PHONES... Seems any idiot with a mobile could be Bond these days, and fuck I wasn't it sponsored by SONY !!!

I'm off to raid the drinks cabinet to make myself a VESPER.... I wonder if I have any Gordon’s ?

Good film, all round solid 8 out of 10.

I enjoyed it- they've really made an effort to do something distinctly new with the new Bond.

I can't believe it's a 12A (well, I suppose I can, as anything can get past the BBFC these days)- the scene of Bond fucking up and killing a guy early on is pretty hardcore. Taking out the camp post-death one-liners isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely doesn't feel like a family franchise anymore.

It's good that Craig is a different type of Bond. I personally found him too chunky, thuggish and blond to be attractive, but he's certainly got screen presence.

I really enjoyed the opening credits- very stylish, and the action shots were top drawer. Some good spats with M, and Eva Green was one of the more memorable recent Bond girls.

Recommended.

12A means I can take my 4-year-old in, right? (Anyone under 12 has to be accompanied by an adult.) I was thinking of taking all the boys along as I haven't seen a James Bond in the cinema since... erm, The Spy Who Loved Me when I was about 14 I suppose. And I can still remember how good that was on the big screen. It's the one with the union jack parachute and the submarine car and the 2CV isn't it?

What do you reckon? 4 year old, 6 year old, 9 year old, 16 year old. All hardened San Andreas veterans. Be ok to take them?

It's very violent, dang. Lots and lots of the red stuff. Personally I'd think anyone under 10 is pushing it and even that feels slightly rong.

Damn. Just as they all get to the age where I can take them to something a bit more entertaining than the latest Pixar-by-numbers cartoon, and suddenly cuddly old James Bond goes and turns into some sort of proper grown-up. [Mad]

What a strange film OHMSS was last night - Bond is actually in love and spends half the plot wooing the amazing Diana Rigg, then spends a fair portion of the film looking fucking stupid in a kilt and a flouncy ruffle thing while pretending to be a flagrant, and only then does he go and nob a couple of chicks in the line of duty - except that they're a bit minging.

And then that ending. Bloody hell, innit.

I'd say View to a Kill, personally.

Although OHMSS seems to have every action sequence take place in front of a back projected screen - the CGI of the 60's...

DVD LOL... I watched it PSP styleee mate, quality telesync, picture as good as VHS - The only letdown was sound during the credits where it wobbled a bit having been pulled directly from the original source..

I could probably mail you the files tonight when I get home, under 1 GB for the 2 mpeg4's for on the PSP.. Mind it was only 1.2 GB for files playable on the PC.. I can probably upload them somewhere... Mind you can probably download it quicker off torrent the filename to look for is:

Casino Royale TELESYNC XViD-PUKKA

If you can still Pisexy it'll only take you about 15 minutes...

wasn't he the oldest person to be hired as Bond? He's pretty ropey - most of the fight scenes are pedestrian at best, a bad stunt man with a wig and his head down at worst. most of the love scenes had at best an air of 'yeah right' at worst a sense of noncery going on. By the time Living Daylights came about you neither believed or cared that he was a super spy.

The Bond of The Living Daylights was Timothy Dalton. But it was still shit.

Diamonds are Forever, with probably the worst but curiously most memorable villians, Messrs. Wynt and Kidd. The scene at the end is truly shite - though funny in its shiteness.

I sort of lost interest in the Bond franchise after Licence to Kill, which in my view has been the best one so far; I think Brosnan was a half-decent Bond, but the stories were pretty poor - Tomorrow Never Dies is the biggest pile of bollocks ever. The Jonathan Pryce character was nowhere near believable.

What the Bond franchise needs is another Cold War.

I watched this last night. I don't know why, I suppose I was sucked in by the positive reviews and "new bond" stuff. Well. Same old stuff. As Louise pointed out, it was like flicking through a magazine. I'm sure you could spend time pointing out the inversion of previous bond stereotypes and the constant gags directed solely at the audience, but really, it's just bond. Chasing, chasing chasing, cars, babes, violence. Fairly exciting, but never tense. Too self conscious. 3 garys.

Diamonds are Forever was Connery. The expensive post OHMSS return that paid for the Scottish to have a proper education. Despite the homophobia attached to them I always kind of liked the camp malevolence of Wynt and Kidde. Amongst the camp and quips Diamonds does still include that brutal elevator fight which I’m sure influenced a lot of the hand to hand combat in the new film.

I enjoyed Casino Royale, it manages to nicely reboot Bond sans gadgetry, and with restored brutality, but to retain the post-card locations and grand scale action element that define the series.

Some spoilers below.

I liked Craig. He inhabits the role physically. His walk had a sort of shark like urgency about it, and he’s sufficiently fine enough an actor both to pull off the cold killer thing and then to have his heart melted pretty convincingly. I thought Eva Green’s Vesper provided a convincing enough reason for the thaw, just the right blend of frostiness and vulnerability to crank Bond’s shaft. La Chiffre gave good baddy. And I was pleasantly surprised to see Jeffrey Wright in there as Felix Lighter, even if he had naff all to do this time out.

Action wise I thought both of the first two set pieces were pretty spot on, though I was slightly disappointed by the sinking Venetian house at the end, it just seemed rather unnecessary, even if it did provide Vesper with a more beautiful suicide location.

All in all a great return to form for the franchise and an enjoyable action movie with at least some brains to match it’s brawn.

So on my recent soiree to England I finally got to see this film, and thought I'd like to post up my observations. As I have said before I'm a bit of a Bond fan, and previous threads have mentioned my trepidation at Mr Craig's probable portrayal of this timeless franchise, so I was really up for seeing this film.

I'd seen enough of the trailers for the opening scenes to not be anything of a surprise, apart from it's very non-typical Bond style. It could have been any film - the grainy black and white film, the somewhat violent method of JB earning his first '0' - no real plot introduction (in fact the plotline was never really explained until half way into the film), the seemingly rudimentary intro - gone are the classic stunts, the near-death then valiant escape - this was a full-on, brute-force fight. So different - it left me feeling almost a little empty.

I have to admit I did feel that through the viewing of the movie, its complete deviation from the previous movies tried and tested script left me sometimes bemused, wondering where the film was going. I guess the thing is with the franchise that they have never really been movies to make you think - the plot lays out in front of you, you follow it and it ends up with a huge finally, and James gets his girl and the world is saved.

This film is *so* different in so many ways.

The plot follows no pre-defined format, instead telling a story with not too much of an actual tale - its actually more James Bond's re-introduction, not just for Daniel Craig, but going back to basics - this was the Bond that Fleming wrote about - you cut him, he bleeds. He's a bastard, and a hard one at that, yet he is the most human Bond - he is fallible, he's breakable, and he knows pain. He still has the gift of the gab (a little pithiness has to remain) and an eye for the ladies. He falls in love and carries it well (not like in the Bond film that shall not be named), and gets heartbroken, yet switches back to bastard again realising he let his guard down and got suckerpunched. The humour is still there, but refined - Moore's now apparent crux was his glib retorts, yet Craig does not need that to save him - he's athletic enough and built like the provebial brick toilet door to make Bond into a real action hero, and does it fantastically.

Like I said before, I was banking on Daniel Craig pulling this role off, and was a little scared he might not do it, but I am very glad to report he not only pulled it off, he did it to almost perfection. The word "Best Bond" gets bandied around every time a new film comes out, but I don't think it's too early to start thinking about we may just be welcoming him to the fold. This film was either written with him in mind, or the casting crew must haev chosen him the moment they saw the script - either way matters not, as it was the perfect marriage. The film has stripped Bond of all the dressings and come away with a terrific movie that I think will no doubt ostracise a lot of established Bond fans for its complete change, but has the potential to be enjoyed by a much larger circle of movie goers. But for this Bond fan, who saw his first 007 film 29 years ago at the tender age of 7, Bond has grown up, as should have I, yet I'm as excited about this and the franchise to come as I was back in 1977 after seeing the Spy Who Loved Me.

I missed Q however (Bond can't be completely devoid of some gadgetry) but by concetrating more on the characters than the toys is a good thing.M has evolved into a more callous and cold person, much to my agreement, and I am happy for Judi Dench to continue playing the part - she's not let the role down so far, and at this rate is unlikely to.

So in short, 9 Barrys out of 10. And one very happy Bond fan to boot.
