I just read an article in a copy of The Bookseller that was lying around the office. The National Year of Reading commissioned a survey, the news is that there's some 20 million people (C2DE) who can read, but don't. The feedback shows that they believe reading is for 'losers', 'retards' and 'people who don't know how to live'.
Really.
The Bookseller is prodding the publishing and retail world to get up off its arse and go and engage these potential readers. It reckons that Celebrity Biogs and Misery Memoirs are a step in the right direction. But...
Do we want more people reading if all they're reading is this... shit?

I think that's more about the untapped potential of the market than improving the psychic health of the nation. There's a lot talked about how to get people who don't read to read, and the only way you can really do it is with a product that's tailored to them. So you end up with something idiotic, juvenile and pointless. It's not going to improve the psychic health of the nation, but it might help publishers sell more books.
You can tailor books to people who want to go in for self-improvement, but don't know where to begin, or don't have the time, but if someone thinks reading is for retards what can you do?

I'm not sure if I'm any judge, but that did seem like a pretty fine ass to me. Not so sure about the oily ass-pile on the right, though. Apparently you can have too much of a good thing.

It just looks a bit... bundled. Like there's no girls actually attached, just a pile of greasy gluteal muscles someone found in a skip.
