A step too far?

Any purpose in setting out ethical guidelines restricting the abuse of robots? Personally, I don't see the point in a robot servant you can't abuse. I quite like the idea of having a robot servant and being able to cuff it round the head if I'm not satisfied, shove it aside when I'm in a bad mood, and when it's trying to serve drinks at a party tripping it up and having all my guests laugh and jeer at it as it skulks out the room.

So. Rights for robots. Absurd or necessary?

Robots should be designed with big squashy noses and pneumatic butts specifically so you can deal out comedy stress-relieving beatings to them.

I think robots should be programmed to take this feedback, and adapt their behaviour accordingly. You'd teach the bot how to act by hitting it when it got things wrong. Not only would this lead to better and more personalised robots, it would give humans a great way of venting their anger without hurting a living being.

Robots don't have feelings.

Yeah that's the stuff. Kick it to the ground, and then grab the bottle and smash it over its head as it tries to crawl away. Break a couple of chairs over it. I mean... really that's what I want in my life. I'm completely capable of making my own drinks, but what I really want is something I can beat up with impunity and that will weep and beg me to stop while I do it.

I hadn't factored in weeping and begging, but now you come to mention it you'd really want that as standard, wouldn't you?

I'm trying to decide whether I'd prefer it to plead for mercy with either a Disney-esque robot voice, something like Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, or if I'd rather it sounded more like... you know. Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot.

D'you think it should reset after a beating or should it maintain an attitude of cowed fear and hesitancy for a day or two? Maybe that should be the default. You could upload 'skins' couldn't you?

I'm sorry, Master. I'll... I'll try, honestly. Please. Just let, let Sophie try again for one more day. I'll do my best, I promise. Just don't send me back... snff... jus please don't send me back to the shop, not yet.

I'm thinking here's a potential avenue Thorn might enjoy. I even tried a search out of curiosity to see if there was any pornography based around crying, but... apparently not. (I found a site called Meatholes, but, no.)
