I'm back down that London for my work at the moment, and there's something about London that makes me always try and do everything for hardly any money. At the moment, that means Youth Hostels again - ten quid a night at the moment, special deal, but that ends in a couple of days time.
So, I'm looking for an alternative and thought I might try some camping, what with this extra hot Summer we've been promised. But there's only about three campsites anywhere near London, and I bet they're booked up. Might have a go though.
But it got me thinking about why someone doesn't set up an indoor campsite, or a multi-storey campsite. If you look up "indoor camping" then you get loads of people talking about setting a tent up in the front room and having a sleepover. Or there are Scout halls, but they mean everyone just lined up on the floor in sleeping bags.
What I'm talking about is an actual campsite, using either a disused multi-storey car park, or a half built office block, or an old warehouse, or whatever. Then you could have camping in the middle of town. It would be dead cheap to run, though not as cheap as a car park, presumably (talk about a licence to print money). You'd only have to provide the usual toilets/showers and a laundry room and washing up area.
Why don't people do these things? There are loads of empty office blocks and that.
I can't even think what the Dragon's Den people would have to say against that idea. I reckon they'd be all for it.

free, indoor campsites with regular discos and an unending supply of mind-altering substances, anarchists and lunatics. Had some pretty good times at squats in the past.

Terrible idea. Instantly has me thinking about the kind of emergency shelters that spring up in schools and stadiums after a tsunami or some other natural disaster hits and unsuspecting populace.
True, camping is all about surviving with the least possible amount of human dignity and creature comforts, but it's one benefit is that you are outdoors and therefore when the rain let's up, you can look out your tent and see grass and sky.
