I'm in the capital tonight but at a total loss as to how to amuse myself. We have a big press event tomorrow (Conan Doyle related) so I didn't really fancy getting all drunk and pissed up on booze, but then there's nothing on at the pictures that really tempts. Also: I clock off around 6pm so most galleries and ting will be shut to the max.
Anyone got any last minute recommendations?

Selfridges, of course. In the run-up to Christmas (which has been going on since about August, prob) it won't shut until about nine. Little drinkie in the Champagne bar, finger some lacy drawers on the second floor, lie face down on some sofas on five... ahhh.

Go on one of those Jack the Ripper guided walking tours to tell me if they are any cop or not.
The V&A is open til 10 on Wednesdays, but today is Tuesday I think.

quote:Tours of the Whitechapel and Spitalfields area of the East End have been taken for more than 40 years but the trouble has erupted only recently. Residents are angry at what some call the "zoo or circus" passing by their homes and the growing numbers who take part. Eggs have been thrown during tours and two weeks ago a 53-year-old woman was reported to have been shot at with an air rifle and her tour group stoned by youths.
Not a bad suggestion, Vogue, but I think Herbs's smalls-fondling recommendation is leading at the moment.

Taking a spin on the London Eye on a clear evening could be quite lovely - it is a clear evening and the lights should be quite twinkly.
The V&A is indeed open until 10 on Wednesdays. But that's not much use to you today.
There's an ice rink at Somerset House, which is supposed to be very atmospheric. But I hear that it can be difficult to get tickets. Here's the link: http://www.somerset-house.org.uk/whatson/icerink/
Or you could try for standby tickets at the NT - or any other theatre that takes your fancy.
If you did fancy shopping - just about anywhere and everywhere on Oxford Street should be open....

Not far from the BL is The Space (dance and performance venue) or the Water Rats (live popular music). Head south to the Bloomsbury theatre or try the ULU on Malet St.

Keep going south and you'll get to Lincoln's Inn Fields, the Soane museum is open late some evenings. Give them a call. Or maybe you could check out an evening mass at St Clement Danes.

You could get the DLR to Shadwell, step out of the station and head right to the library, check out the mural marking the Battle of Cable Street then retrace your steps, first left past the station for pie and mash.

If you go off the idea of fondling smalls, I believe the Royal Festival Hall has free concerts early of an evening sometimes, though they may be a little 'jazz'. Then you could 'take yourself up the Oxo Tower' for a drinky.
Or if you go to the RA, you could nip into the Waterstones on Piccadilly beforehand, and have a cocktail while looking at a nice view.

I didn't think it was possible to be bored in London. I thought there was always something to do. I'm glad this thread has set me straight.

Yeah. In the end I smuggled a bottle of wine into my room and spent the evening working on a short story. The room had an excellent view of the BT Tower so it was pretty cool, actually.

I went on one in Leeds once, about scary ghosts and crazies, as part of the film festival, back in 1987 when it had sexy posters of sexy women doing sexy things, which I stole off of walls. It was "good".
