I wouldn't mind some co-op Ace Combat on Saturday evening. Although you're probably out aren't you? I'm the only one who stays in on a Saturday playing computer games against a pretend man from the internet.

I will be online this weekend. I might be on tonight and tomorrow but will definitely be online Sunday.

Current onlineable games :-

Guitar Hero 2
Guitar Hero 3
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
Halo 3

Although, I've only played about 45 minutes of Halo and therefore would be pretty useless in a team environment.

I am out tonight, but tomorrow I'll be free to play games all day / night. Louise is doing an ACCA, and that means I get Saturdays free now.

Up for Halo and ace combat. Ace Combat especially, as I've yet to play on co-op.

I don't think gh2 is online...?

I shall add you as a friend though, sg5.

Tilde? Tilde?

Of course you are. What use is an imaginary friend if it can't falsely claim to offer companionship.

yes. Also, we could play gauntlet or golden axe or something.

Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :

I may get Burnout Paradise but am going to have to complete Halo first. I have no idea if GH2 is online to be honest I was just assuming, and you know what happend when you assume. Something along the lines of you aren't always right or something. I'm not entirely sure I've remembered that joke accurately.

I've just checked out the CEX website and for trading in just TWO of my gamecube games I can get a whopping £31. That's amazing. How can they give such ludicrously high exchange prices.

I quite enjoyed Sunday's Halo 3 session, although I get the impression Dr Benway found it an exercise in frustration, with me and my friends proving so inept that it actually harmed Benway's skill rating to be on the same team as us.

Probably my favourite moment was Benway yelling down the mic for us all to stick together, for fuck's sake, finally managing to rally us into the same place at the same time, only for us all to get sniped in the head, one after the other, in less than three seconds.

Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :

Benway and I had a cracking game later on last night. It was 4 vs 4 slayer and pretty much as soon as the game started the other two people on our team decided to quit making it a 2 vs 4 game.

We started off poorly and were quickly about 10 points down then realised that teamwork was needed to try to form some sort of comeback.

So, we stuck together, we sniped, we bludgeoned, we dodged, we weaved and more importantly, we believed.

We still lost by 2 points, but we tried damnit, we tried.

Heh, yeah. He does that if you're in the same room too. You think for a minute you're being really helpful but then you'll look at his screen and you can see yourself making doughnuts with the Warthog and trundelling pathetically up a sand dune then getting shot.

Thorn (L) vs Benway (R) - the game nobody wins

I enjoyed myself a lot too! There is something crushing about watching an enemy team act as this well oiled machine - a warthog w/gunner, missile pod support + snipers, carefully moving from territory to territory - and then seeing your own side just jumping up and down on a hilltop shooting each other in the face. But it's all good. Always going to be up for some of that action. I enjoyed the later games with the ever changing teams as well. The screenshot above is of my favourite moment from one of those games.

But SG5 is correct. When we did actually work together, both of our kill counts went up.

Well, none of you bothered to be online last night which is just rude really so i had to play mostly with Americans. But.. I found a fellow Bournemouth fan! (Not american). What's the chances or that? There are only like 9 of us in the world and we're slowly being decapitated. Or that might be highlanders.

yes, I was outside of my house last night, and this evening I believe there will be bitches in the living room, but rather than getting it on, they'll probably be watching a Kylie DVD. But wednesday will be all about being humiliated on xbox live.

Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :

I had to stop playing team slayer as it was upsetting me so much. I don't understand how I can pump 9 shots into someone with the battle rifle then hit them from close range yet they don't die. Yet I keep dying from one or two shots from someone behind me (not sniped). It was making me really angry but then I found the game where you are in teams of two, one driving, one shooting from the vehicle just rushing to checkpoints and blowing up the enemy. That was a lot more relaxed.

I guess it's a bit case of "Learn to play" for me, but surely 9 shots and a hit with the gun should kill anyone unless they have a shield but I would say that it didn't work in over 50% of cases. Is it because I'm mostly hitting the chest rather than the head?

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

If they're getting you in the head with the battle rifle, that'd explain why you go down so fast. Or even two hits from a mauler or a shotgun will take you down. Not sure about 9 shots and a punch being enough. Typically I find myself unloading an entire clip from the AR and following that with a punch is the only way to be sure.

Posted by Dr. Benway (Member # 20) on :

yeah, with the battle rifle, you have to go for the head. With anything really. Shooting at the chest will just end up with you being dead as they return fire into your face.

Posted by Dr. Benway (Member # 20) on :

also, that AR / punch tactic is so common that it seems 75% of the time, you'll also go down as your opponent does the same thing to you. The real killers seem to use headshots from the battle rifle, but you know. That's quite hard.

Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :

That's funny because it sounds like I'm going to spunk in their face when I'm actually going to shoot them. It's a sophisticated piece of comedy known as a double entendre. I don't expect you all to master it just yet, but just that you know it exists is enough for now.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

Getting up close and shotgunning them in the face is a satisfying instant-kill, as well. Obviously works best on close-quarter levels. Less effective when you have to sprint the length of Valhalla to get close to anyone.

I like how you've hyphenated Xbox there. Like it's X-Men or something.

Anyway, the only tears I'm crying are the tears of sheer literal joy at being able to watch Scary Movie 4 on blu ray in glorious eye-wanking high definition.

Can you watch Scary Movie 4 in high definition on your Xbox? Let me answer that one for you: No you cannot!

Ha, and indeed Ha, at your feeble attempts to defend your puny console against the might of the black monolith of Justice that is the PlayStation 3

I will be at some stage this weekend. Probably mostly mornings though which isn't the most social time to play. I think as Kate has just had 8 night shifts in a row and I've not seen her I'm going to have to do things that people in a relationship do like sit on the sofa watching crap on TV and not talking to each other.

Or playing Oblivion!

anybody up for a few rounds tonight?

Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :

Sorry, I didn't see this message as I finished work at 4 but I was up for a few rounds but you weren't on.

Very nearly won my first ever game on Lone Wolves. Swords on the Pit. I started off not being able to find anyone for ages and by the time I had my first point the leader was on 7 which wasn't promising, but I'd been reading up on swords and I know how to do the lunge now. (Move towards them until your central aiming thing turns red then hit right trigger although this can be blocked by a sword leaving you open to attack).

Anyway, I came back and at one stage I was 2 points in the lead. The adrenaline was pumping and I think I started getting a little careless and this guy was coming back. With 30 seconds to go it was 20-20 with me and this other guy. I'm running around manically trying to find someone then a grenade gets thrown at me. I neatly jump away from the explosion, still taking a little damage but still alive. I see the grenade thrower who was one of the lower scored ones so I figured this was an easy kill for the win. I start chasing him down, he's backing up throwing grenades. I'm weaving and jumping and getting closer. 10 seconds remaining. He's still running backwards, I can see the fear in his eyes. Probably 5 seconds remaining. Still 20-20. He runs backwards into a wall. YES. Here we go. I cover the remaining couple of yards, my aiming display goes red. I hit trigger and my player starts his lunge forwards.

Game Over. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. It was a tie. I was about 0.05 seconds away from winning [Frown]

Actually. I just remembered I won a Lone Wolves game of oddball 100-0-0-0-0-0 but that doesn't count.

Actually, I have a TV that I could probably let you have. Er, I mean it's a birthday present for you!

It's a 14" ALBA - which should be perfect for Halo.

Some good games last night, even though I was drunk enough to be a complete liability. My favourite moment was thrashing around hopelessly in The Pit for the the first three quarters of the match and then finding the rocket launcher and nudging us into the lead ten seconds before the end. A thrilling victory.

Lol. I am an easy target, though. You can't not shoot someone bimbling slack-jawed around High Ground with no real clue. Thorn's boot camp wasn't terribly good preparation for the real thing as it mostly consisted of him standing in front of me going "ok now shoot me... no, trigger... right trigger... no, that's the melee button - B for Bash, remember?"

Eventually, if online multiplayer support for the Wii ever catches on, I might be able to enjoy this thread.

Then again, it seems the Wii has a pretty solid repulation as not a real gaming system, so there's a solid chance I'll be locked out for some time to come.

It's too bad, though - I think manhunt 2 would make a fantastic online game. The gameplay motions are frankly disturbing. I actually had to put the controllers down for a minute after going through the motions of strangling a guard for the first time.

Hardly a resounding endorsement of the Wii online multiplayer ability, is it? The best thing they could say about it is that it's "technically functional". It's like a restaurant review that points out only that the reviewer survived.

Not quite out yet. Still another 10 long days if I remember rightly.

I'm hoping it turns out to be everything it promises to be. I've got the early japanese demo and it's pretty good but still very much has the feel of a work in progress. The graphics look absolutely mesmerising though. Have you been reading about the GT TV stuff they're on about doing with it? When you get bored of playing the game, it can download fresh content, video features about the cars in the game, replays of actual races, etc etc. They were even on about letting you watch F1 races live but I think that's a bit optimistic.

So yeah. I'm pretty excited about GT5 Prologue, but really GT5 is what I'm waiting for.

But there should be plenty of very decent stuff coming out for PS3 in the mean time. Fingers crossed.

I went looking to by a copy of Gt5 this evening but sadly its not out until the 28th - I did get a second Sixxaxis today though so for wo player fun with the Simpsons.

I've also been playing GH3 which is fun but very RSI-inducing. Also seems some songs are easeir to play than others (One by Metallica, knowing and loving the song was great fun. Cult of personality - very difficult. Raining Blood - impossible - and this is all on easy level)

So my next purchases have to be GT, GTAIV and maybe something a little more relaxing - perhaps if Darryn heads over this week he can bring Tiger Woods for a demo?

Ringo - have you seen the complete steering wheel/seat combo thing for GT ? I think it will be the first thing on your christmas list. Also when I get it I want driving lessons online from you

Alson Ringo - have you got a steering wheel for it yet? Any recommendations?

And do you know if they are bringing out a decent firearm peripheral? I'm thinking Medal of Call of duty would be ace with a proper rifle thingy

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

I've got the Logitech Driving Force Pro which I use for my PC and PS2/3. I originally bought it for GT4 but it's fair to say I've had a lot more use out of it playing Live For Speed online on my PC. It's force feedback and has 900 degrees of steering rotation. My only complaint is with the force feedback. In terms of feedback it's brilliant, don't get me wrong, but it's pretty noisy which detracts from the experience a little, and can also cause issues when playing late at night. It also makes for a slight lack of realism when using the full rotation (can be set from 180 degrees to the full 900)

I'll explain. You know I've done real life drifting in my car, so I know how a steering wheel behaves. In terms of countersteering once the car begins to slide, all a driver needs to do is simply allow the steering wheel to naturally slip through his hands, as the force on the front wheels will naturally create the steering angle required. The DFP however doesn't have the torque in its force feedback motors to be able to do this fast enough meaning you have to physically push the wheel round. And unlike a real wheel it becomes very hard to do this quickly because it's very small and because it's connected to motors rather than actual wheels. This is why, when I'm doing drifting on Live for Speed, I have the wheel set to 180 degrees of rotation as it's the only way to change steering angle quick enough.

That technicality aside, it's robust and feels pretty much unbreakable. You do need a desk or some other solid object to bolt it to, and it requires its own power supply.

That said, I fully intend at some point to replace it with its successor, the Logitech G25. It's meant to be quieter and have a better setup for force feedback. It also features a clutch pedal and a small H-pattern gear shifter to give the ultimate in driving simulation. AFAIK, GT5 will support the clutch and gear shifter feature (although it might not be available on full blown race cars which may require the use of the paddles or the sequential shifter)

But it's like £160 which is a lot of money for a peripheral if you're not sure you're going to use it.

I've thought many times about building myself a decent cabinet with a racing seat and a Logitech G25. On the Live for Speed forums, there are people who have dismantled their G25s to invert the pedals (so they hang down rather than protrude from the floor, making it more like a real car) to facilitate proper heel/toe gearshifts. I would have done it ages ago but I just don't have the space for anything like that at the moment sadly.

I think playing Halo 3 with Ringo, whichever team he was on, would be the opposite of fun.

he's right. I'm no fun to play with or against in any kind of FPS type environment. In fact, competing in any sense rarely brings out my better qualities.

I went on a training course with Kyocera to learn how to fix printers and whatnot. A colleague went with me as well. The course had about 8 attendees, and we were split into pairs. Naturally through all of the practical exercises, I made a point of finishing first out of everyone, and through the entire afternoon I didn't even let my colleague touch our printer for fear he might cost us the win.

He doesn't really speak to me much these days.

ETA - even recounting that tale, it's with some shame that I must admit feeling quite a strong sense of satisfaction from the fact we were consistently fastest all through the day. I am a small, petty man deep down

yeah, I agree. But then I would say the same thing about myself. Something I've learned is that I need to not drink beer throughout the halo sessions, as after two or three tins, I'm pretty much just in it for the lulz.

I wouldn't say that. Our three man teams have been some of the most fun I've had on the X-Box.

that's very kind. Have you noticed how horribly good sg5 is getting? His overall k/d is nearly .8

Anyway, RS:V2 isn't out yet, but it is coming out. We could always switch things up a little by playing some of the first game over the weekend. I also have Call of Duty 4, which is worth it. It's way more fast paced and war-like than the knockabout fun of halo. Also, no jumping.

Also we could play some arcade games. I still think gauntlet could be fun. Or bomberman.

Man I can't wait for the weekend!

Yeah, I saw that coming a mile away, though. I've lived in the shadow of his casual brilliance at everything for nearly twenty years now. Whether it's musical instruments, mathematics, gaming, whatever, Cherry In Hove has got an unpleasant and uncanny ability to reach genius level in just a few hours before fixing you with a quizzical "I don't know what you're finding so difficult about this?" look. It's like being friends with Good Will Hunting. Except I don't feel any Good Will towards him, just bitterness and resentment.

OK I will buy Rainbow Six Vegas 2.

Did you know that jnhoj will be at my house on friday, so perhaps he can 'jump in' on some social halo matches, split screen style.

You know what, though. If you were the son of god it'd be easier to endure three days of suffering than if you were an aetheist. You know? You'd be like "OK - this is awful, really awful, but this time next week I'll have ascended into paradise and for the rest of eternity I will be able to do whatever I want." You'd grit your teeth and see it out. But some people endure for far longer than that without the promise of a million billion years of rocking out and finger fucking chicks at the end of it.

I bet he had an Xbox in his cave though. I'm literally not going to be near a computer for about 60 hours ralph. No computer games, no e-mail, no TMO just having to hang out with my family and get drunk. Sure jesus had to hang out on a cross but at least he didn't have to put up with big family arguments. I reckon he was glad of the peace.

why wouldn't he finger-bang chicks? What's wrong with it? Once you're in heaven you can do what you like, right? And if you're there for infinite time, at some point you're going to give it a try just out of boredom if nothing else. Heaven is like a kind of virtual reality land where all of your fantasies come true isn't it. Like the trocadero when it first opened. And Center Parcs.

For the Christian on the cross it's pretty much win/win isn't it. I mean, if it turns out not to be true, and your essence simply snuffs into oblivion, then you'll never know the disappointment of being wrong. And at the very least, your faith will have comforted you through a few days of pain. But if you're an atheist, you're pretty much screwed either way. If you're right and there's no afterlife, then the rest of your existance is going to be spent enduring one of the most unpleasant forms of death us humans have ever devised. But if you're wrong and there is eternal judgement at the end of it, not only have you had a really shitty death, but you've then got an eternity of punishment ahead of you. Either way you're pretty much done for.

for those involved in abrahamic religion though, they spend their lives totally not partying, so they can party for infinity once they're dead. Little do they know that actually, they're just wasting what little party time they're going to get. That's not a win/win situation. There's no win after death, and they're totally failing at life by walking around believing that a kind of ghost is controlling everything.

Well there's no fail though is there. Because if you're to accept that once you die, your consciousness ceases to be, then they'll never actually realise that they were wrong. They'll never have to suffer the misery of realising that they had wasted their lives. They lived, smug with unwavering certainty that they would be granted eternal happiness, right up to the moment they fizzle out of existance.

Atheists on the other hand have to suffer the misery of knowing that they're completely accountable for the direction of their lives and know that there is no reward greater than the ones we create for ourselves within our own lifetimes. So there's more of a burden on an atheist to do something with their lives. While a Christian can sit at home on a Friday night, perfectly content with just watching TV or whatever, an atheist in the same situation is full of doubt and regret, worrying about their life which they're pissing down the drain.

Quite the opposite really. While a Christian has to spend his life concerned over whether or not he's serving God to his fullest, the athiest can just slack off and do whatever, safe in the knowledge that nothing lies beyond the grave.

but a christian would worry that they might be displeasing god by sitting around on their arse, watching un-religious and highly inappropriate things on TV. Unless they watch nothing but GOD TV they're going to be guilty. if you're catholic, you're guilty all the time anyway because you're filthy and sinful, and you know that the son of god fucking died in a horrible way so you can sit around thinking about sex like some kind of disgusting whore. Or if you're protestant, sitting around doing nothing is going to send you to hell because you were put on this earth to work and be properous, and to not do so will guarantee a ticket downstairs. When I'm sitting there in my knock-off raiders shirt and sweatbands, drinking booze and gawping at the TV, I'm having a really good time, not feeling guilty at all*. Because I'm not letting anybody down. If you feel guilt over that kind of shit, that's the protestant work ethic, man. That's religion right there, telling you that you have to work all the time and doing nothing is sinful. That's residue; even if you aren't a believer, that's martin luther talking.

*The guilt sets in later at night, when I'm lying in bed.

Yeah but Christians have the comfort of knowing that their suffering is for some greater purpose. Like in the book of Job. For those that haven't read it, it goes like this:

Satan: Hey God, these people here, they like you a lot. But only because you're nice to them.

God: nonsense, they love me because I = teh awesome. Look a Job there, he's a top guy. Loves me.

Satan: Pfft yeah. He loves you because he's got a big farm, loads of livestock and ten kids. If he didn't have that, he'd diss you hard.

God: yeah whatever. Come on then, prove it.

So Satan causes all of Job's kids to die in a series of accidents. His farm is ruined, his livestock all die.

Job: well, this certainly is an unfortunate series of events. Oh well, the lord giveth, the lord taketh away.

Job's mates: Have a word, Job. God's punishing you for something. You've sinned. I bet you're really a paedo

Job: no no, I'm a good guy, God wouldn't punish me

Job's wife: well if you're not being punished for sinning, then God must be a total jerk for doing this.

God then smite's Job's wife

God: Well she's dead. But he still loves me. Look how he grovels.

Satan: Only because he's still healthy. He's lost all that stuff, but he's not in any pain. Here, check this out.

Satan completely ruins Job physically. Boils, sores, arthritis, erectile dysfunction, the works.

Job: Aarrrrrrrgggh my skin!!

Job's mates: See, Job, you're being punished. Just admit it, you've done some bad shit. Repent and maybe God will let up a bit.

Job: arrrrrgh!! Come on God, that's enough now, surely? What gives, what did I do wrong?

God: STFU. I'm GOD. I'll do what I want. You know what it's like being GOD? No, you don't. When was the last time YOU created the universe? Oh, that's right, never. Don't question my infinite wisdom, n00b.

Job: [Frown] sorry god

God: yeah, that's right. And your mates can fuck off, too.

So Job prays for his mates' forgiveness.

Satan: well I guess you were right. Job got completely pwned and still he loves you

God: Well of course. I am God, after all

Satan: True!

My mum once sent me a present at Christmas. It was a Kids Bible. What I was particularly gutted about 9apart from wanting He-Man figures) was that at the time I was perfectly able to understand that sending a kid a bible was the lamest shit you could do. My Dad said nothing, but it was like she was saying 'here you go, j...just in case you need saving' Unfortunately, I was not wise enough to know better than what was written in there, so a small part of me has a hard time disbelieving that Noah built an ark because the world was full of 8 foot giants who beat people up.

...in fact, I almost thought I had imagined it. I did not. Behold: Bullshit.

Er yeah. I bought the game too and was all set except I got distracted on Sunday when this dude gave us this new amplifier with a phono stage and so i spent most of Sunday rewiring that and then gettign the turntable out and calibrating it and then wiring it in and playing it in and then I got excited by all the records I'd forgotten I owned like a 10in single of I wanna Go Where the People Go, which I think I bought for 99p for the cover art and so it'd never been played and I was genuinely impressed with the warmth and detail in the sound, which meant that on Monday, when we were also supposed to be playing I went out to the record shop in Oxford only to find it'd closed - so you had the last laugh there, in a way - and spent much of the rest of the day playing CDs and being slightly frustrated that the amp didn't seem quite as tight as responsive as the previous one when it came to rock and metal (although it had a bit more clarity in the top end, which is a poor trade-off) and wondering what to do about it. Then I fell asleep listening to The Blackening.

playing Mass Effect. Not as good as oblivion. The side quests are all exactly the same: Go here, drive around, get an artifact, kill some dudes. I don't like the combat system with that menu where you have to select what special powers to use, I don't like all the pointless scanning of planets to try and find the one you're supposed to land on. Driving the car up mountains can get boring. The lack of upgrades on the car is annoying, as is the reliance on omni-gel. The weapons aren't varied or interesting enough, and the weapon / armour customisation seems more annoying than fun.

I do like the character models, and I do like the main storyline. Some of your crew are genuinely interesting. I like the way environments look and feel. I like the voice acting, I like the mission system were you can quickly find out how far through each sidequest you are, and you know exactly where to go. The actual combat seems pretty good and exciting, although the whole cover system is a bit limp. Too many times though I've thought that I was doing okay, and then two seconds later, I'm dead, because the battlegrounds can get a bit confusing with everybody running around in almost random directions. But it's still satisfying to kill people.

Other good things include the design of your ship, the effort they've made to try and make loading times a bit unlike loading times, the way you can gain information simply by overhearing things, and the way, for me at least, it instills a genuine desire to be 'good' (paragon), even if it's always a bit too easy to choose the 'good' path in dialogue trees.

No enough sweet future technology though (think: Deux Ex), and the Geth are basically just the robots off phantom menace.

In fact, Deus Ex kind of beats it on every level apart from how it looks and sounds. But I haven't finished yet, and I'm expecting some good plot twists in the future. Especially concerning my favourite crew member, thn robot chick. Is she a chick? Is she a robot? Thinking about it actually, perhaps the story of Mass Effect is better than that of Oblivion... it's just the boringness of the sidequests that make it fail. Like, in Oblivion, it was always a bit scary going into the dungeons, because you never quite knew what was down those dark, damp holes. And you genuinely felt like you were adventuring, finding stuff that was hidden. That doesn't happen on Mass Effect.

I am also playing a lot of Lumines Live and N+ at the moment. Lumines is a great way to trance out for half an hour or so, and is one of the few games that I'm happy to replay the same levels over and over again, in order to try and get to a new stage. I like how it kind of fucks with your head in that, some 'themes' seem much easier than others to play with, even though the principle never actually changes.

N+ is just freaking awesome, although quite frustrating once you hit the harder levels. Also - Darwinia+ is coming to the 360! Darwinia baby! That's one of the most atmospherically emo games of all time, and totally upset me when I played the last level on the pc.

Other games that I'm interested in right now are Condemmed 2 (360), Final Fantasy Crisis Core (PSP), Braid (360), Ninja Gaiden (DS) and of course - 1 month to go until GTA IV.

I've tried to get into Oblivion twice now - on PC and Xbox - and it just won't grab me. I prefer Mass Effect by a country mile, but I think it's just a personal thing. ME is more about the story and characters whereas Oblivion seems to be about having a big open world where you can do anything, with the whole gates of oblivion thing seeming a bit like an afterthought - a main quest thrown in to give things some structure. With ME it's more the other way around - it's all about the main quest, with the side missions being there because RPGs have to have side missions.

ME's probably my favourite game on the Xbox, mainly for the great dialogue and the way it's worked into the game, and for the remarkably good story. Plus! It's a game that actually makes a romance subplot work which is quite rare. The only other one I can think of is KOTOR.

Also, comparing it to Deus Ex is a bit unfair, as Deus Ex is the best game ever. It's a bit like saying "Not sure about this film. It's not as good as Seven Samurai".

You mean Tali? She's just a chick, but she has a suit on because she lives on a hyper-sterilised armada most of the time, so she has no immune system and has to wear all that crap to stop from doing. She's got lovely hips, but you can't fuck her because she'd die. You can fuck the blue alien though.

well, you're wrong about Oblivion vs Mass Effect. While I agree that the main story is better in Mass Effect, in order to fully enjoy it, you're going to need to do all the dungeon crawling to level up, and it's just a drag. The universe in Oblivion felt more rounded - the various guilds all had their own pretty good plots, and each sidequest would still advance some kind of rewad driven plot line. You got things at the end of the fighters guild and the thieves guild that were genuinely cool, and had required a lot of hard work to get to. Oblivion had stuff like... waiting until people have left their house in the morning so you can use your lockpick and then break into their house and take their stuff, poke around in all their private things, read their letter and diaries, and then chip off and flog it all. I loved that, it really made me feel like I was doing the wrong thing, but then I had no 'bad points' to 'punish' me for it. I didn't need that, because I knew I was being a bastard. I don't get that in mass effect. I can say ***** things, but that's it. Also, some of the quests in Oblivion were amazing. The one where you get sucked into the painting and everything appears as if it had been painted. The one where you have to set up ridiculous slapstick 'accidents' for people while doing the assasin's guild. The one where you end up working for a paranoid delusional, carrying out increasingly absurb spying missions for cash. And the whole thing with the world split between two sides of the manic depressive within whose imagination everything exists... There's none of those awesome incidental characters or thoughtful, cool side missions in Mass Effect. The moral choices in Oblivion didn't always seem "good" or "bad" like they do in ME.

Also, ME is only funny or lighthearted if you start being pointlessly rude to people. It takes itself very seriously. The tone doesn't change much, which is a shame considering how long you spend in the game.

EDIT: to make it readable

Yes, I've read the back story and chatted loads with her, but there's something in the codex where it says people often wonder if members of her race are partly cybernetic, and I thought how do you know that in fact, the geth didn't create her race, rather than the other way around, and there's been some hints that there are some secrets there, and I was looking forward to finding shit out.

I guess not though. Thanks for that.

I've got back into Oblivion again now and am still loving it. Getting close to finishing the mages questline now, then will start on the fighter's guild and then the dark brotherhood I guess. Then I might think about doing the actual game.

The only problem I can see with Oblivion is that it isn't really going to have much replayability for me. I've read of people who are on like their 5th play through but I can't quite understand why. Although you can obviously change your major skills that doesn't really change much about your character apart from what it is strongest in to start with. And as there is no variety with quests I'm not sure i'd ever play it through again. But.. having said that, I'm not sure this is a major issue as I'll probably be close to 100 hours when I've finished so that's still good value for money.

Mass Effect. I've played it a bit, not much though. I don't like the combat so far but this might just be because I'm not used to it. The conversations are OK. I haven't scratched the surface enough to give a proper opinion on that yet.

Currently playing some wrestling game which is OK. Really I'm just playing it still so I can finish the season and get like 250 gamer points.

I ordered Splinter Cell 4: Double Agent yesterday which I'm looking forward to. I loved the first one and haven't actually played any since then so it should be good.

I'm a bit tired of Halo to be honest. It's Ok when there are people you know to play with, but all the American NPCs are programmed in a very generic way. I also think their coding is slightly off as it seems to be

if teamlost -> Throw racial slur
if teamwon -> Throw racial slur

This AI just isn't believable and definitely needs to be worked on in Halo4

you should try rainbow six or call of duty then if you're done with the halo.

I'm not sure I'll bother with rainbow 6. I'm not a big fan of having to control multiple people. I didn't enjoy Cannon Fodder on the Amiga very much. I didn't particularly like Freedom Fighters on the gamecube. I don't really like Red Alert type games, I'm not sure I like controlling multiple people in Mass Effect and so I don't think this is going to change for Rainbow 6.

I think it's because I'm a bit too stupid to focus on more than one thing happening at a time.

I find it dead handy in Rainbow Six - I like sending my men into open ground to find out where the snipers are firing from. They always do it too. Always willing to take one for the team.

Posted by Dr. Benway (Member # 20) on :

yeah but then they die and you have to go in and save them. It's best just to leave them out of harms way, behind a door at the beginning of the level.

But rainbow six vegas 2 online is good fun. Tense.

As I can't have my computer and xbox connected to the internet at the same time at the moment I've had to come up with a good way to maximise my gaming time and my pornography time and I've discovered that while surfing porn I can have bungie.net open in the background which will tell me when my friends are online and so I can finish off quickly and then get onto Halo. It's revolutionised my life.

Sorry I didn't join you for multiplayer Sunday and ignored CiH's message. I spent the entire afternoon drumming on Rock Band. Started stepping the difficulty up to 'Hard' on songs that I've been listening to for years, like Epic.

It's an immensely satisfying experience, not just because you're learning the rudiments of a new instrument, but also because - like all the best computer games - you're training your brain in new ways to interpret information. You see the coloured blocks coming towards you and you start to see them as rhythms, rather than simply as an instruction saying 'hit green now'. Great, great fun.

It certainly started out poorly.

On our first game, I had been mainly playing GTA before hand and so in an attempt to get back into Halo controls I hit the left trigger to bring up targeting, but unfortunatley on Halo the left trigger throws a grenade which wasn't a great move as the whole team was in the area. Oh well.

I really enjoyed it yesterday. We had loads of really close games. Annoyingly we lost more of the close ones that we won, mostly by 1-3 points. We had a few games where all four people were playing as a team and they were great.

I'd forgotten quite how much I like Halo

I just played Halo 3 online and got utterly destroyed. I don't understand the game at all. Some of the guns seem so overpowered it defeats the purpose of having a variety of guns to choose from. I'd spend ages shooting one of those alien handguns at some dude, only for him to take me out with a single shot from a grenade launcher or something. None of my own hand grenades seemed to explode - I don't know if you're supposed to detonate them somehow or if it happens automatically - and I couldn't figure out how to pick guns up with my left hand - sometimes it lets you, other times it doesn't. I just ... didn't find it instantly gratifying, I guess, in the way that TF2, for example, was. I also felt pretty isolated, not being able to communicate with people during the match, for some reason (only in lobbies afterwards). I can see how it could be a really fun game if you know what you're doing and understand exactly how everything works, but for a noob like me who jumps straight in, it's just ... too ... hard. I'm going to say that the chances of me playing Halo this weekend are zero. I'm going to a wedding on Saturday and I really can't get out of it. I tried telling Octavia that I didn't really want to go, that I'd rather spend time playing X-Box Live, and she got really angry with me yelling "Why wait until now to tell me this?" So we've pretty much comitted to going. I suppose it would be awkward if we cancelled at the last minute.

next weekend, my calender tells me, a bloke is coming round to fit some kind of TV...thing..in the flat. They put some sky dishes up or something. New aerial socket maybe. Not sure. Anyway, that's it for me.

You're about 320 years late for that. Just how old is this calender?

it's an outlook calender that's got a public holidays thing plugged into it. Pointless.

Sounds interesting. Are you planning on entering Masterchef, by any chance?

Funnily enough it was suggested to me that I should enter, but I don't think I will.

I'm a competent cook, but not adventurous enough I feel.

My girlfriend keeps telling me to enter too. "You've nothing to lose!" she says. "Just don't tell anyone you're going to be on it until you make the quarter finals!"

I think I'd crack under the pressure and I don't think my repertoire extends anywhere near the level they have to achieve at the final stages when they're having to cook for the Roux family and other ultra-critical judges. I'd probably get wankered and start a fight with them or something.

I was looking at that the other day, graphics looked rather dated though. Have you seen that 3 is in the pipeline? Looks rather nice from what I've seen. I'm currently getting into Guild Wars, being a necromancer and raising yourself an undead army to fight for you is rather good fun..

Yeah, the graphics are awful. I realise the game is 8 years old, but the graphics are poor for back then.

However, apparently it's amazing to play. The reason I got it was because I watched the gameplay trailer of Diablo 3 which looked right up my alley so thought I'd best get into Diablo 2 to see what all the fuss was about.

With respect to guild wars. I've given up on online gaming really apart from schooling JBN at Halo occasionally as I find it sucks my life away too much.

I know what you mean, I gave up WoW for that very reason. Guild Wars I find a bit different though, there's no monthly fee so I don't get that feeling of having to play all the time to get my money's worth, and it's only really nominally an MMORPG anyway, as there are only other people around when you're in the main cities, the rest is instanced so that it's just you and anyone you team with, so raiding isn't a factor.

Well, guys. I've had my 360 for about two months and it's already on its way out. Whenever I try to load previous saves, they either stick at the loading screen or they play properly for five seconds, then slow down to about two frames per second, then stop completely. I watched a great 25minutes video about myths of Halo the other day that they either proved or disproved.

Things like you can bat a missile away with a gravity hammer, the path of a missile can be diverted with a grenade, if you empty a full needler clip into a gun on the floor just before someone picks it up then they explode. It was 25 minutes of stuff I'd never considered. I liked it.

Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :

Ouch. So what do you do with your life now? I'm guessing the only option is to finish work, get drunk and then go to bed?

There is some way some people have fixed it by wrapping it in towels or something. Sounds odd, but might be worth a try.

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

From what i've read, the problem is that the machine overheats and something gets soft. When you turn it off and it cools down again, a part warps and causes a short which is what gives you the rrod.

The towels thing is this - wrap the system up so it's nice and warm then turn it on. Leave it on long enough for it to overheat again, then turn it up the other way and let it cool down. Apparently this *might* undo the damage.

I've also read about people putting them in the oven.

Though personally I'd just call the service people as apparently they're pretty quick at replacing them.

Posted by Tilde (Member # 1215) on :

Yeah, don't do any of that, you just need to call the service people, they send you a big envelope thing that's all addressed and paid for and it goes to germany to get fixed. Comes back in a few weeks. Very efficient.

Note, if you put in the original box you won't get the box back.

Also note, I don't know anyone who has an xbox and hasn't had the RROD.

I guess so. A ring piece can be loads of things, not just your asshole. In fact, I think 'ring piece' meaning asshole is figurative. Like watersports is things like waterski-ing and diving, rather than just weeing on your partner, and jugs might refer to a large vessel for transporting liquids, rather than breasts. You have to understand that these words have a literal meaning and that this crops up from time to time, and it's also what generates humour when they're used metaphorically.

I dunno man. So she turns up, and you answer the door. It's the middle of the day and you're at home. You're looking like post-capture Saddam, probably not totally dressed, and she's picking up your knackered, overworked games console. I just have a feeling she's not going to think you're the kind of dynamic alpha male that she's going to invite into her stiff brown UPS trousers.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

Pearl necklace. There's another one. It doesn't really work if it only means cumming over a lady's chest. The phrase gains its power from the imagery; the literal meaning of a necklace made of pearls has to come first.

I'm still on my first Xbox, which is coming up for three years old this year. Meaning, if it does croak I'll have to pay for a new one.

My second 360 I had for the better part of a year and that didn't have the RRoD and it didn't scratch discs or do anything else bad. Seemed a perfectly decent bit of kit. Noisy, but then they all are.

Posted by Cherry In Hove (Member # 49) on :

I don't have a problem with noise, but whatever games I'm playing at the time I just install to the hard drive so there is no disc spinning which I guess helps prevent any disc scratching and also probably helps stopping it overheat.

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

I thought the scratching thing was mostly from idiots moving their consoles around when the drive was spinning anyway

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

You get laser burn and things like that just from regular use. My Xbox hates my Mass Effect disc, for some reason and keeps fucking it up. At first I kept taking it to gamestop where they would put it through the disc cleaner, and it'd work fine. Then I found scrubbing at the marks with the soft cloth worked, too. More than any other, that's the game I'd put on the harddrive, because it seems murderously hard on the DVD drive. The HDD is chock full of rock band songs at the moment, though.

Posted by Deep Freeze (Member # 841) on :

I basically played left4dead with johnj so hard, and dished out so much awesome that my machine killed itself so it could capture that perfect moment forever, and never again have to face mundane tasks like playing CSI DVDs or examining thorn's achievement list.

Split it into stations online and then buy tickets for each individual journey. It'll be a lot cheaper.

Single from Kings Cross to York on the Friday is £28.50 and from York to Kings Cross on the Sunday is £25.

So that means it is £71.15 plus the cost of a tube across london, so about £76 in total or something which is not far off half the price.

Thanks for that McDirts. I'm surprised that a Player has to use the trains so much that he knows the ways to get a cheap ticket.

Perhaps that's how McD gets to travel Player Class for the price of a Standard Class ticket.

I often buy tickets for my Moms to come and visit me from Philly. Tickets from Philly to Bel Air are mad expensive yo. Split it down per station and all of a sudden the getting's good.

Obviously Players don't travel anywhere by regional railway. Or indeed any railway. Except the Orient Express yo.

Any luck with this yet? might be fun to race 'online'

I've got the GT Legends mod pack for it too which is super cool.

Well I had a nightmare of a time trying to get this game installed. I bought the combined Race 07 + GTR Evolution on DVD-ROM. It asked if I wanted to install the online or offline version - I picked online. It then did something with Steam and installed GTRE. It said it was complete, so I clicked Play GTRE and then it told me Race 07 was required and proceeded to download the whole bloody thing from Steam. Not just updates - the whole Race 07 game. Shouldn't this have been on the DVD? Took about three hours to download that.

So I finally got it up and running and configured my Logitech wheel. For some reason the wheel constantly jerks from left to right, a couple of times a second, even when you're driving in a straight line, on a flat surface. This doesn't happen in any other games and I can't find out what's causing the problem. Could it be something to do with dead zones? I tried 2% and 5% deadzones on the steering axis to no effect. It's almost drivable if I concentrate really hard on fighting the left-right wiggle. I can nearly keep up with the pack (100% difficulty) on the first track in WTCC 2007 but I'm sure my lap times are suffering.

I've tried searching the web, but can't find any meaningful answers. Any suggestions?

That's really odd, and what makes it odder is the fact that my logitech wheel does the same thing with the demo of GT Legends but is fine with GTR. I have a 2 degree dead zone set but it works fine with no dead zone at all. I'd say it's probably something in your feedback settings which needs tweaking.

There are also scalable sensitivity options so you have a less sensitive area towards the centre. i.e. steering inputs towards centre are translated to sublte movements in the game, while the further you turn the wheel, the more sensitive it gets. I have this turned up reasonably high which works well for faster, undulating tracks.

I just remembered I installed the offline version so can't say about Steam. I should probably change that as I probably can't play online at the moment.

I did mess about with these a bit, trying to find the culrpit, but to no avail. I seem to remember there were four different sliders under FFB - engine, springs, dampers, etc - and they were all set as 0% by default. Any idea what yours are set to?

I tend to keep the sensitivity around 80% which suits me for most of these sims.

I'm not quite ready to race online yet, but once I've got these FFB problems licked, I'll look forward to it.

Good old Steam. I was frequently moved to bitter tears when Half Life 2 came out, and I was living in a house with a 56k modem. It took me something like 8 hours to make the game playable, even with the DVD. It's the future, you know.

I hadn't had a problem with Steam for years until I bought GTRE. Yes the HL2 fiasco was a pretty big cock-up, but I've found that Steam has improved hugely over the years. I was surprised to find that after recently reinstalling Windows, I was able to connect to Steam and it could download and install all the games I've bought without having me having to dig out the original discs and CD-keys. As easy as pi-racy.

The only thing that pisses me off about it is that many games are available on DVD-ROM from actual shops or online resellers for about half of the Steam price. Obviously they have server costs to cover, but surely that doesn't add up to the cost of disc manufacture, packaging, distribution, shop markup, etc.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

Yeah that seems nuts - I thought one of the big selling points of steam was that it would be cheaper, because it didn't have to offer a discount to retailers and so on.

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

I just reinstalled and tried to lauch it with Steam and got the same thing - needs to install Race 07. Predicted time - 12 hours. That's fucking ridiculous. You buy a game but in order to play it online you have to download a whole other game?!

Anyway, I've still got the offline version on there so I checked my FFB settings on it and they run thusly:

FFB Effects - LOW
FFB Strength - 85%
Reverse Effects - ON
Steering Force - 170%
Steering Vibration - 4%
Engine - 9%
Brakes - 9%
Curbs - 25%
Impact - 100%

Which all seems a bit odd as I don't think I tweaked it much but it seems a bit weird. You'd have thought they'd have a baseline of like, 50% for each one and then you tweak it up or down accordingly. Who knows. That's what it's set to and it feels good.

Not sure how much the Logitech drivers come into play though as there are FFB settings on there too, or if it's totally app controlled.

I keep failing to get the Cr0wnd achievement though as I suck.

there's a great chance of me being online sometime over the weekend. I'm still playing that fucking lost odyssey though. I'm completely gripped by that thing. On the final disc now, but have done almost no sidequests, secrets etc.

Lost Odyssey was good. I think I was on about 35-40 hours when I got to the last disk and finished on about 70 hours. It's a big one the last disc if you're going for all achievements. (Well, I missed out on one, but that one was stupid and involved kicking every single fucking pot in the game)

You will all be excited to hear that I just got another three achievements in one game of L4d. One for not disturbing the witch, one for not having to be revived at all and one for survivinv dead air! At this rate I'll have 4000/1000 points for this game in no time!

So, I went online over the weekend and Thorn was playing the Xbox Dashboard game so I didn't want to disturb him from that, and Benway was a bit caught up playing "Away for 47 minutes" and I know he's been working hard to get the "Away for 1 hour" achievement and with him so close to that I thought he would be furious if I interrupted his brilliant streak so I had to play L4D with other forum favourites.

We had a great game. Kovacs was constantly entertaining on the microphone regaling us with witty stories and setting up some backstory for the characters as well as suggesting that as Louis and Francis seemed to be so close all the time perhaps there was something going on. Had us in stitches! Cheers m9!

It was a shame that just as we were all getting in the elevator and the doors were closing a smoker grabbed Bamba and pulled him through. I tried to shoot that smoker Bamba, but I had the shotgun out at the time and that just wasn't good for the distance shot, sorry about that [Frown]

It has to be said though, Discodamage is a headshot MONSTER. She was like a woman possessed. Zombies streaming towards me after the car alarm had gone off and I was having to reload and I sensed imminent death then BANG head explodes, BANG another head explodes BANG BANG BANG. Brilliant stuff.

We'll have to do it again guys!

I'm ready for some online racing now, Ringo.

My attic is finally bedecked with an awesome Recaro leather driving seat. It's eight-way electrically adjustable, and also heated, although I haven't managed to get the electrics to work yet, using a mains-12V adaptor. Maybe I need a car battery under my desk?

It's also got a built-in airbag, which should afford me some protection in the event of a 170mph crash. So, yes, I'm ready to hit the road...

ETA: Ringo's blatantly going to kick my arse.

Excellent! So what are we driving? Caterhams?

I've also been enjoying the *Touring Car Legends mod for rFactor. It's got some great 80s-90s motors, like the Sierra Cosworth, Escort RS Turbo and even the Rover SD1, Volvo 240, etc. The Cossie is a pretty scary beast - I've flung it in to the Donington armco more often than I can count.

I was at a track day event when one guy who'd retrofitted a US market XR4ti closer to Sierra Cosworth specs tried to complete an autocross course just after dropping his exhaust system. It still had the US market 2.4l turbo four, but tweaked to the point that without the backpressure from the recently lost exhaust, the car was undrivable. Made lots of tire smoke as it went around in circles though, shortly before being disqualified.

I think we just need to know each others' Steam IDs. Mine's ajpaynter.

There's a message when you load up the Steam version of GTR:E that says something like "Press Shift + Tab to access the Steam community while playing" so I guess that'd be the place to start.

That's very odd. positive backpressure is usually only a requirement for naturally aspirated engines where pulse resonance is a factor. With a turbine you don't have any exhaust resonance as it's all deadened by the compressor. Generally speaking the lower the pressure behind the turbo the better as it aids spool and increases the responsiveness of the turbo. Look at old turbocharged GT cars and the 'exhaust' systems on them are little more than a couple of inches pipe coming straight off the exhaust housing.

Is not not possible the guy was just, like, not awfully good?

Interesting fact - when Sierra Cosworths were used in the WTCC they ran with 'spool' differentials - completely locked rear differentials meaning both rear wheels constantly engaged and turning at the same speed. And they were absolutely mighty. I only mention this because most internet fools try to tell you that a locked/welded differential will be lethal on the road.

Anyway, Misc I think my steam ID is lfschris (same as my Live for speed ID) so, uh, I guess give that a try or something. I might even be online tonight.

Posted by froopyscot (Member # 178) on :

What I meant to clarify was that the rig he'd built was so overboosted that without the backpressure of the exhaust to keep it in check, it couldn't do anything but spin the rears once the turbo spooled up. I don't think the engine as a whole lasted very long under those conditions either, if I recall correctly.

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

Ah yeah I guess he was using a simple modified mechanical wastegate which wouldn't be much cop against the boost surge at mid rpm.

Still though, it's amazing what you can throw together if you know what you're doing. A friend of mine has turbocharged his MX5. it's a 1600cc one with about 115bhp from standard. He used a patern manifold from ebay, the turbo and intercooler off an old saab, retarded the igition by rotating the cam angle sensor and then just boshed the rest together with some old silicon and aluminium hose sections. It's not pretty, and the fuelling is controlled by a variable resistor spliced into the wiring for the AFM so it's pretty inneficient. But it cost him less than £500 to put together and it's now happily hitting around 150bhp at the wheels. It's a bit of a dog off boost but if you keep it in the sweet spot it really flies.

I just ordered a so-called 'style' bar for my MX5. The perils of internet access of work, boredom, and an itchy credit card finger...

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

I never liked those style bars personally. Always seemed to me that if you were in an accident and the car rolled, they're in the perfect place to fold down over your skull. That's why I got a proper rollcage for mine.

You might be interested to know that www.mx5parts.co.uk are doing a special offer on all their stainless steel exhausts, which I can heartily recommend as they look and sound great.

my style bar was delivered to work today. you can all let your breath out again now.

so, what shall I do this evening, huh? continue the epic garden weeding session which I started last night, or have a go at fixing my style bar?

in other news, I blacked out on the way to the loo to throw up on Sunday morning, having managed to generate a truly heinous hangover from 3 glasses of wine taken with food. that's the second time I've done this - something to do with the vagus nerve, apparently - at least this time I only ended up in a heap on my bedroom floor rather than at the foot of the stairs, which was my first experience of this rather amusing litte physiological quirk. The bruises on my right arm and knee are not so much UDIs as IHIs.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

Also wtf is a style bar anyway?

Posted by Ringo (Member # 47) on :

You know on modern roadsters, like the Audi TT, and that Ford Ka thing, they have those metal hoops behind the seats which are there for rollover protection? Old roadsters never had to have those so if the car rolled over you got well and truly destroyed. A style bar is a thing which bolts behind the seats to look like you've got rollover protection, when in fact they're mounted really flimsily and are made from a very thin grade of steel so offer no actual protection. Hence 'style' bar rather than 'roll' bar.

A proper rollbar has to be much more substatial and requires a bit of cutting to attach at the hard chassis points. A rollbar is a fair bit more expensive too.

It's been out for, like, 60 years now.

Geordi, I'm detecting a high concentration of tachion particles

 -

Thanks Data... well, that explains why we can't reach the Enterprise. The particles must be forming some kind of barrier or forcefield.

 -

So how do we get off this rock?

 -

Well, it's a long shot, but I could try reversing the flow of chronotrons being given off by Data's homing device. That might just give us enough time to contact to Enterprise and receive a transporter lock on our location.

 -

But wouldn't that mean that we'd be almost invisible to any away teams? There's got to be another way!

 -

Commander, I believe that Geordie is correct. If we can reconfigure the homing device located wthinin my cranial sensor array, we can momentarily disrupt the tachion field.

 -

And how long would that give us?

 -

By my calculations, using my remaining power, we could disrupt the field for approximately ten point three-four-eight seconds.

Posted by Kanye West (Member # 837) on :

 -

And after that?

 -

Well, after that Commander, Data here is going to be taking a loooong nap.

 -

We can't do it, it's too risky.

 -

Commander, I'm afraid it may be our only chance. Unless we can contact the Enterprise, my sensors are reporting that we only have enough oxygen to survive on the surface for another two hours.

Just one achievement for 25 points. It isn't showing up as they realised there was a game breaking glitch in it that corrupts games and means you can't learn specialisations any more so they pulled it from marketplace.

This morning a title update on the Xbox 360 for Dragon Age: Origins was made available in preparation for the release of Return to Ostagar. This title update introduced a previously undetected issue that causes specialization classes to not work correctly in Dragon Age: Origins. We are removing Return to Ostagar from Xbox Live until the issue is resolved and are recommending that you do not download the title update. If you have already performed the update, we apologize for this and are working hard to ensure a fix is available as soon as possible.
