A month ago I moved into my new flat. It's the bottom level of a Victorian 3-floor house, with a reasonable size of patio and a simple, grassy shared garden. Inside, the decor is simple with a touch of luxury. And because of all these things, I love it.
What I don't love so much is the sound that intermittently comes through from next door. I don't know what it is. It sounds, for all the world, like a heartbeat. I have this mental image of a giant heart suspended from arteries in the middle of a huge, stainless steel-panelled room, surrounded by computers with winking lights and 3 solemn-looking, white-coated scientists with academic beards monitoring it.
If it is as I think, then that's quite scary. I don't want it to be a giant vital organ. What if there's a giant liver/pair of artificially-breathing lungs/kidneys giving constant throughput in there? I don't want to live next door to a giant lab!
Does anyone have any theories as to what it might actually be?

A giant maggot, thrashing about in straps. It's head is shaped like a dick and it gave up long ago trying to escape properly so it just bangs its head repeatedly to drive away insanity.

Perhaps you're just hearing your own heartbeat, if it's very quiet at the time.
Or it could be a hippy infestation next door, with their beads and their womb-music.
Call the council, get them to send round some bikers to get rid.
