Halloumi!

A colleague of mine just attended an anti-terrorism training day. One of the things the cops suggested businesses and organisations might want to do for their employees is to produce emergency grab-bags that they could use if they were faced with a catastrophe, so they could continue to provide excellent customer service. You know, morphine, splints, prosthetic face...

And I read a few months ago that a business in Australia is doing a roaring trade selling similar items for security-inclined individuals, selling day-packs containing water-purification tablets, respirators, first-aid kits, survival knives, fire-starters, etc.

Maybe these things are a good idea? Maybe they're a bit stuffy and solemn. What would you cram in your sack to ensure a brighter tomorrow, to make sure the terrorists don't win?

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

Well, then... it looks like the terrorists have already won.

Is this in case of Peak Oil?

Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :

You're right, Mask-face, we may as well let the terrorists win.

Or I could make a cup of tea and think about it?

I think this is in the case of anything. Plane crash, tsunami, terrorist attack, sudden declaration of war, complete collapse of Western civilization... Something you can keep in the boot of your car, under your desk at work, by the front door. So your prepared. For anything.

doc got it in one. guns = protection & food. the bible would be good for starting fires too.

Duct tape and cable ties are definitely essentials. There aren't many engineering problems that can't be solved by the inventive use of duct tape and cable ties. Maybe silicon sealant as well. Then you're well set for just about anything.

I finally got round to watching I Am Legend starring Will Smith the other evening. I quite enjoyed it, except for that terrible ending. Fortunately, I got the version with an alternate ending which was marginally better, and even hinted at what the fucking title is supposed to mean.

Anyway, as other people have hinted at, it's other people that would be the biggest problem in a crisis. This usually only gets hinted at in disaster movies, unless they are about specifically de-humanised other people - like zombies or virus infected freaks.

So, my main priority would be to get away from other people and stay away from them. I really liked Will Smith's house in I Am Legend. I'd like one like that, where you don't just draw the curtains or close the shutters, but instead you slam some giant steel blast doors across the windows.

Those wouldn't really fit in a grab bag though. So, uh, can I have a bicycle in my grab bag? So I could get away very quickly, even in a stampede of terrified 4x4 drivers.

Ooh, we'll need some albums to play on the stereo. Let's start with this one...

An axe, some firelighters and a RealDoll™.

If there is an apocalypse can I start smoking again? The cancer thing would all be off if there was an apocalypse, surely?

With an axe and some firelighters the RealDoll would be superfluous.

Is there any truth at all in the Jonesy-Kurt Russell thing?

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

What? THat they're related?

Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :

No, the sex thing.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

Yeah, they do look quite similar. I think it was the second thing I ever said to Jonesy, before it was a meme. We were at the bar and I turned round to SG5 and said "Christ, doesn't he look like Kurt Russell", and Jonesy gave this rolleyes, deflated thing like it was something he'd heard all his life and didn't agree with.

Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :

SG5's dead cute, isn't it? I love him a bit now I've met him.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

He's probably the only person I've ever met who I'd describe as "completely evil".

Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :

You're mean.

I worked with a guy a couple of years ago who looked exactly like Daniel Craig out of James Bond, but he couldn't see it himself at all. It must be a self-image thing, possibly harking back to our caveman origins.

Someone needs to remind me what Jonesy looks like, please, then I can make an assessment.

He looks like Kurt Russell. FFS, pay attention.

Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :

No-one in that picture looks like Kurt Russelll, though.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

Then it's not a good photo of him.

Posted by Louche (Member # 450) on :

I think you're lying.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

Well, it's tricky, because in that photo Jonesy's got a kind of a panicked grin on, the like of which you would never see Kurt Russell wearing. You see, what you have to bear in mind is that we're saying Jonesy looks like Kurt Russell, not that he is Kurt Russell, or even looks precisely the same as Kurt Russell. So you have to try and use a little bit of imagination, and if you concentrate on the eyes, on the mouth, you start to see some similarities. We really need a pic of Jonesy doing a kind of hard-man stare. Like Kurt Russell would do.

Jones is on the left. Fish is on the right.

This Jonesy-Kurt Russell thing is plainly Londonite TMO fabrication. There is no resemblence, you are just making it all up. Like all that stuff Cherry was telling me about that was pure lies.
