I am just clearing out the glass empties from the recycling and realise that hot damn have I been drinking a lot of cheap wine. When I get paid, I might stock up on some decent bottles of wine to sit behind the hob, that I can pull out at a moments notice and enjoy comfortably. Now, I'm no wine know-it-all. I know what I like and I like what I know, but I don't actually know if I'm doing it right. Basically, I would like you, the people of TMO to recommend your favourite wines from the 4-10 pound mark, in the style of top trumps. Don't bother wanking on about a bottle of 100 pound wine I will never buy, because that's frankly a waste of my fucking time. I need something available in real actual shops I will go in, or places I can shop online.

Go on.

A good selection of wines for the common man can be found here.

Here's a great vintage you should sample whenever possible.

Get down to Sainsbury's NOW!

They've got a St Emilion, Something-de-Lussac (Red, France) at half price, 6 quid. Very good. Also a half price Chianti Classico (Red, Italy), 5 quid. And you might want to try their Taste The Difference vintage Cava, again a fiver.

If you're lucky enough to live near a Londis, you can get 3 bottles of Blossom Hill for a tenner.

I've not had Blossom Hill for a good year or so as I used to like it but felt that the quality had gone right down (bad season perhaps). Are the reds good again now then? I might have to give them a try as they generally seem to be on offer near me.

I can heartily recommend this one.

It might be worth trying a mixed case from Laithwaites or similar. The bottles they've sent me have been very drinkable, and they always seem to have introductory case offers for about £40.

ETA: currently £50 for 15 bottles: *

You've probably all received the same thing, but... Amazon sent me a £25 Laithwaites voucher. Logon at www.laithwaites.co.uk/amazonwine, use the voucher code: amazonwine

I don't think Blossom Hill has ever experienced a vintage good or bad. It's just shit isn't it? Like most american wines.

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

I haven't used Virgin Wines for a while, but they were really good. They once sent me two cases of wine rather than the one that I ordered, when I pointed out their error they told me I could keep it!

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

I must admit, I've never actually tried the Blossom Hill, I just like to keep abreast of the deals at my local Londis. My current favourite deal is 8 cans of Scrumpy Jack for a fiver. Londis ROCKS!

Posted by McDirts (Member # 6680) on :

this, at £7 or £8 a bottle is the dogs fucking bollocks. It's ridiculously drinkable and well worth getting a case in.

Great website. I'll get some of that Shipwreck stuff for my Dad's xmas present. He's very fond of calvados, so apple brandy steeped in Zulu bibles should be right up his alley.

The Hardy’s Stamp range has the dual advantages of being vegan, and is often sold with a screw cap, which is useful when you have misplaced the corkscrew. Or you are vegan. Or having dinner with a vegan. Although I have found that when dining with vegans it can be good to buy non vegan wine and have it all to yourself.

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

Vegans don't deserve wine. They don't even deserve Scrumpy Jack.

I've no snobbery I tell you. I'm taking the ponce out of getting drunk. I'm like the Martin Lewis of crunk. I use to drink Frosty Jacks, so this is a step up for me.

Virgin Wines are great, I pretty much buy all my wine from them because you get more for your money anyway, plus they do a winebank thing where you pay in a fixed amount per month and every 3 months they top it up by one payment (e.g. I pay in £20 a month and after 3 months they top it up to £80). I think I might have a voucher for about £30-40 off your first case or something as well if you want it Mikee.

As for actual wine recommendations, you won't go far wrong with anything from the Monos Locos vineyard, and my current favourite is Guia Real Rioja, the 2004 Gran Reserva is fantastic but is currently about £13 a bottle, the 2007 Tinto is also very good though and is currently £6.49.

I'm considering the Virgin Wines offer at this moment.

Virgin Wines have sent us some brilliant stuff. And if you don't like it, you don't pay for it. Never had a bad bottle from them, except for NZ sauvignon blanc which I don't like anyway.

Edited to take out the exact same thing that Physic said.

I was until very very recently a longstanding member of the Sunday Times Wine Club, and used to get one of their Four Seasons mixed cases every (you guessed it) three months. I've never had a bad wine out of the bunch, only stopped the subscription when I realised that I had approximately 60 bottles of wine yet to be drunk sitting in boxes in various locations around the house.

They usually have a similar introductory offer as Virgin etc and you can cancel at any time.

here you go

Posted by McDirts (Member # 6680) on :

I'm in Sunday Times, I might start going a bit more adhoc though. I might give Laithwaites a go.

The Virgin Wines thing looks good, am now considering that too.
Plus, in the terms and conditions it mentions:
quote:

which must be one of the very few benefits of being overweight!

I'm always really jealous of people who use Virgin Wines. I would absolutely love to use it, but my big problem is that if you aren't in when they try to deliver the wine, they will leave it somewhere and put a note through the door telling you where it has been left.

Now, I'm also aware that if it then goes missing, they will replace it for free. This is good, however I live next door to a homeless drop in centre. The only places around to leave a box of wine are pretty much in full site of the homeless drop in centre. There is approximately zero chance of me even getting my wine.

Posted by froopyscot (Member # 178) on :

But think of how happy your homeless neighbors would be!

Sad that you aren't in the CA of the USA, where Trader Joe's stores do a fine wine called Charles Shaw, or 2 buck chuck;
wiki-wiki-wah wah

I bought the rose and didn't chuck, which was nice.

Nightowl's father gave me three bottles of the 1993 vintage, which are upwards of £200 each now. We cracked one open at Christmas 2005, and it was outstanding.

For cheaper stuff, we visit our secret cellar in Compiegne. Where you won't find any bargain-hunting Brits, Gott sei dank.

Myself and two other males once gatecrashed a ladies only party being held on-wrap by a very famous singer/actress - while there I began to try and open a bottle of red wine with a cork screw, sending the cork flying everywhere as it seemed to disintegrate. One of the staff came over and said "what are you doing? That's a $2,000 bottle of wine!" so I handed it to him suggesting that he open it.

It was alright - honestly, I couldn't tell if it was much better than a more expensive bottle of red from oddbins, but it was better than, say, a £7 bottle from Tesco.

I ordered our wine from Majestic, in the end. We've had three cases by the kitchen door for a week and so far I've only drunk two bottles of 'christmas' wine. I'm feeling very proud and virtuous.

Only time I've been in the presence of seriously expensive wine was when I was doing the ski-season thing. Six guys hired an 18-person chalet for three weeks to go on a gigantic bender with $250,000-worth of wine. They had $80,000 bottles of Chateau Lafite, dozens of Petrus. It all looked like brick-dust when it was opened and none of them could taste anything because they had blocked noses from the altitude.
