Donald E Westlake dead. One of my favourite authors of all time. His Dortmunder and Parker novels are among the finest in crime fiction and the two series so vastly different in tone and style. I think I recently mentioned reading his Lemons Never Lie, a trifling diversion as novels go but a real page-turner. He wrote scores, maybe hundreds, of novels, I didn't read them all but I never read a duff one. He was a real master and I'll miss him.

I didn't recognize the name at all, but then looked at what he'd written - he was a master of the form.

Captain Dobey died yesterday, too, the prototype shouty black police captain to a partnership that gave him ulcers - another master of the form
