The 29th Anniversary of Bon's death has just passed. When we moved to South East London one of the first thing's I did was take the Masketeers on a pilgrimage to 67 Overhill Road, the site of Bon's death. Apparently there's occasionally some graffiti left by foreign tourists, but nothing really by way of a marker or memorial. I think that's wrong. I've decided that enough is enough, so I'm starting a campaign. Exactly what for I'm not sure, but it's going to involve a plaque or a shrine or a statue or something.

Bit vague.

Who's in?

In my head I started composing an idea for a 18 ft climbing frame that took ages to climb, but you had to do that if you wanted to get to the lump of granite, and the sausage and pastry snack, and was wired up to a 1000V generator, that could be built very frugually as long as we didn't bother to keep it clean and etc etc. It would have been great - better than if Jonesy and Kovacs how collaborated for 6 weeks on a series of threads and posts pulled together from a dozen different troll accounts and illustrated by a few pics H1ppy had taken by firing a camera flash up her skirt - but ultimately, I just couldn't be bothered.

There's a sweet video clip here of Robert Plant going through airport security in the States recently. One of the security guards, who looks like the least likely Led Zep fan at first glance, seems to be genuinely upset that he couldn't leave his post and talk to his hero.

So, I reckon there must be loads of AC/DC fans in Botswana.

Indeed. This painful increase in my posting is sure to end soon. Almost time to go back to lurking.

But lets not get off topic! Bon Scott. BM I think you need to get the ball rolling here. A bit more than you already have I mean.

I know someone at Time Out, I'm gonna see if they're interested.

Australia's National Trust declared Bon's grave in Fremantle a National Treasure a couple of year's ago. Maybe I could get them on board? Get them to put in a good word with our own NT?

We might be getting somewhere, Bon-fans.

Time Out are doing an AC/DC thing to coincide with their tour, I've spoken to someone on the editorial team and the memorial campaign will hopefully get a mention.

In the meantime... I've started the ball rolling over at the fabulous Southwark council. Soutwark council, get this, do their own blue plaques!

So, email your nomination of Bon Scott to>>>

vote4icons@southwark.gov.uk

Shazbot! Nanu-nanu!

I've done the topix one, the google one, the yahoo one, the official AC/DC one... um, I've got a list on my PC at home. I've been getting vague enthusiasm rather than solid support, though. I suppose that's largely due to my initial call to arms being so shit. Still, I shall persevere with this new direction. Top work, NWoD!

Posted by New Way Of Decay (Member # 106) on :

Also, make a Facebook group. (you might need someone to do it for you) For some reason some ***** lap that shit up. The thing you've got going for you is AC/DC fans enthusiasm, so the more enthusiasm you show for it, the more excitement you'll generate from them. Imagine 10,000 fans of The Deece marching on Overhill to see a blue plaque.

Well I meant someone who doesn't keep a secret facebook account which is the only explanation to why I've not been added.

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

I fucking HATE facebook. The only reason I've got an account is because my Dad was ill in hospital and the only way my cousins would communicate was by facebook. Honestly! Fucking facebook! So I played ball, now I can't get rid of the fuckers and all these people I thought I'd left for dead are trying to 'add me as a friend'. It's a nightmare.

I realize I'm probably over-simplifying things, but couldn't you just NOT GO TO FACEBOOK?

Do you wanna do it, NWoD? That way you'll definitely have to be there for the unveiling with Angus and Malcolm.

I haven't a clue. I HATE facebook. I don't find it easy to use.

I'm totally with you on Facebook and what a chore and a load of bullshit it is. My mum said recently 'now you're on facebook, we can keep in contact regularly' - I mean, what about letters mum? What about the postal servive? What about a fucking phone mum? What about email? No, it's come down to fucking Facebook for my mum to communicate to me after 28 years. Shoop de woop. Even then she just tries to superpoke me.

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

I just made missgolightly an admin.

You're next.

Posted by New Way Of Decay (Member # 106) on :

Oh I've just added myself. You should get a decent description of the plaque, sort of explain that you want the council to get a plaque done, the address and that the members who join really need to email that address. Perhaps a picture of the place too or most people will just cruise on by. Tell them you're going to melt down thousands of metal records that don't feature Bon Scott on and make them into a vinyl statue.

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

Dude! There's a tiny little space to write all that shit. Where's it all go? The Wall? Info? The Discussion Board?

Posted by Physic (Member # 195) on :

If we email that address what are we supposed to put? Full details of where we want the plaque or just that we want to nominate Bonn Scott?

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

Um... I sent a longish email nominating him a while back. They're a bit vague about how much detail each email needs... I imagine once Bon Scott's on their radar every subsequent Bon Scott vote goes in the hat.

Posted by Physic (Member # 195) on :

Cool, just sent them an email with a brief summary of what we're after and why. I'll see if I can drum up any further support from my metal minded friends and colleagues.

Posted by Waynster (Member # 56) on :

Natch I am in and have joined the facebook group accordingly.

Incidentally a bit of trivia for you - Gary Holton, the guy who played the West Ham supporting Wayne from Auf Wiedersehen Pet was offered the job of front man of AC/DC after Bon's death, but turned it down as he thought it would get him back onto the smack. Silly boy thought acting would keep him clean - it didn't and he died from an OD.

I am now a fan of the Bon Scott Memorial. Is that how it works, I become a fan?

We should perhaps compose some copypasta on the facebook group and encourage people to use that.

Speaking of AC/DC, I had a ticket to go and see them last night, but didn't bother in the end. Let my friend's wife have it instead.

Posted by McDirts (Member # 6680) on :

I'll never forget the look on my neighbour's son's face when I gave him my tickets for their show at the Astoria. That must've been back in feb '79.
I wouldn't have minded going but I had a bit of work to do on the car so had to let it pass.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

I would have gone if it was a standing ticket, but being seated up in the rafters just sounded like an exercise in frustration.

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

The campaign got a mention in the AC/DC article in the back pages of today's Time Out!

Woot!

I'm awaiting the inevitable torrent of emails with bated breath.
