Hello!

I'm sure you're all agog to know what's been happening. I had the world's most beautiful baby (fact fans) – Samuel – by emergency caesarian at 3am, Wednesday 8 July. All rather too dramatic, with the consent form signed with left hand as being wheeled into theatre, but all fine. We were kept in until last night (Sunday) as firstly he lost too much weight, and then my blood pressure went mad, as did I, cooped up in the maternity ward of Homerton Hospital.

I haven't had more than two hours sleep a night for a week, so am going back to bed. Will post cute photos later

Yay, Herbs! YAAAAAAY!

I'm so incredibly happy and pleased for you. Sounds like you had a tough time but I'm glad that you've got the world's most beautiful baby now!

I'm off to start looking for an awesome present for the lovely Samuel now.

Brief birth story: seems to be the drill with these things. Veered somewhat from the NCT handbook, so no need for straws, snacks, CDs, massage or visualising myself in a tribal hut. Was induced with prostin gel at 10 days overdue, hyperstimulated, so had immediate painful contractions. My blood pressure shot through the roof, so I was pinned to the labour bed with BP monitor, CTG trace, and a drip. Gas and air didn't touch the sides, so was in hideous agony. Screamed inelegantly for an epidural, an hour later it appeared, borne by an angel called Dr Breeze. In my delirium I said 'aren't you young'...

A few pain-free hours later nothing much happening, so put on sytocin (sp?) drip to speed it up, plus monitoring clip on baby's head. Oh, and a catheter. Wired up like some sort of pod breeding machine. Then Sam's heart-rate dropped dramatically, a machine went BEEEEEEEEEEEEEP, the room filled with doctors, I was convinced he was dying, and it was all awful. Then I was whisked into the operating theatre, sliced open, and 10 minutes later Sam was hoisted from my belly.

Only came out of hospital yesterday (Sunday), as he lost too much weight, and because my blood pressure is still very high. Spent the time in a hormonal haze, crying nearly all the time, mostly with happiness, while staring down at his little face and its huge array of amusing expressions, from 'whistle' to 'confused old man'.

I would upload a pic, but can't remember how to make it small enough.

I'm so hugely pleased for you Herbs. I've been bending J's ear all week so he's pleased to hear that Samuel is here and fine and dandy too. Congratulations once again to you and R.

Well done.
As a footnote, our birth, strictly speaking, should've been at Homerton. Which is fine if your newborns been shot or stabbed but otherwise nah. We went for UCH, brand spanking new with reclining seats for the dads and everything. Very nice.

I believe that this is the second TMO baby named Samuel. There must be something to it.

Congrats, Herbs.

Ooh, get you. I'll have you know, Homerton has the best special care baby unit in the country (for all sorts of babies, not just those shot or stabbed). I was most impressed with the efficiency and general greatness of the doctors who extracted Sam, and the midwives. You can keep your reclining chairs...
