Seems as if I'm the CYI trend setter. Every time it gets to 8+ pages, I make the new one with never a person to tell to CYI!

BEHOLD! This has changed this time around:

Uber, CYI!

gawd bless yer, benway. i saw what you did but didn't say anything because i thought it would seem a bit, well, mental - me popping up after a long time away, just to go "whoop! fonzy cool!" etc etc. a tad attention seeking.

what are you up to these days? mail me - i am at home, bored, with an infected ear canal and throat. i am on gmail.

Posted by Dr. Benway (Member # 20) on :

sounds good, but I probably need more information about your email address. I'm not up to anything. Festering, mostly. Thought, last night, I spent about an hour trying to work out why two different discs of Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex both had the same content, but one was supposedly volume 2, disc 1, and one was volume 2 disc 2. The reason? Well, each volume consists of only 4 episodes, but each set per volume is two discs, one with DTS, one with normal 5.1 surround. So, each disc just contained episodes 5-8, and I couldn't work out why disc 1 didn't have episodes 1-4 of the second volume. But - that would have been volume one, not volume 2. I thought that each volume was 8 episodes, split into 4/4, but NO! Oh, the hilarity. This is what happens when Lovefilm.co.uk goes bad.

I am not infected though!

Hey VP!

I don’t have your email so I will say it here, for all to see...

It has just come to my attention that dashing, handsome Scientist In Chief, the right honourable Richard Dawkins will be giving a talk at the South Ken campus, details below. They don’t take bookings though so I expect it to be a bit of a scrum to get in. You may know about this already but I don't know if such news travels as far as the engineering department...

Dear All
I am writing to give you details of the GSLSM Winter Guest Lecture which will be given by Professor Richard Dawkins, FRS on Tuesday 22nd November at 5.30pm in G16, Sir Alexander Fleming Building, South Kensington Campus.

The lecture, entitled "Is Evolution Predictable?" will be introduced by the Rector, and followed by an informal reception for students and staff.

Professor Dawkins is an evolutionary biologist and the first holder of the Charles Simonyi Chair in the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford. You can find further details of the Simonyi Professorship on the web site at http://www.simonyi.ox.ac.uk/index.shtml and links to more information about Professor Richard Dawkins and his work.

All Imperial College staff and students are welcome and I would be very grateful if you could please bring this lecture to the attention of students and staff in your area.

We do not operate a booking system - so please just come along! However, we have already received a large number of enquiries about this event, so we would advise you to arrive promptly to avoid disappointment. We look forward to seeing you!

he is pretty handsome, for a scientist. if i were vogon, id totally be there. he looks like he might be a fan of ponies, and lord of the rings. maybe not orlando bloom, but you never know. people are strange, especially scientists.

Posted by Vogon Poetess (Member # 164) on :

Hey, thanks Abby. That hadn't made it's way to geeky machines dept. I may well pop along, although I was planning on taking that week off. I don't like Dawkins that much, but I imagine he's a good public speaker.

There are only two Dr Abigails on the Hammersmith campus- is your surname a bit elven?

Edit: God, I'd be attending in the interest of Science! Anybody would think I were obsessed with boyhunting or something.

I just read a (rather dull) biography of Douglas Adams, who invented Vogon Poets and apparently he was very good friends with Richard Dawkins. This simply cannot be coincidental and must involve the influence of an unknown force or deity. Explain that one Dawkins.

Posted by H1ppychick (Member # 529) on :

I think I bumped into him once at university, wandering around the Zoology department. I know that one of my friends was tutored (in Genetics I think) by his ex-wife, who was allegedly very bitter. I chose more "outdoorsy" options on my course and never came across either of them in a professional capacity.

Posted by H1ppychick (Member # 529) on :

why is today's active topics riddled with trampoline adverts? is something subliminal going on somewhere?

Posted by Abby (Member # 582) on :

I had never thought of it as 'elven', but yes I suppose that does kind of fit. Hmm, I quite like that!

I shall probably go along I think, and if I dont get in I can go and look at pictures in the Natural History Museum instead. Or shiney shiney diamonds....

Posted by Vogon Poetess (Member # 164) on :

The diamonds exhibition is good, but not quite worth £9 (or £7 as a student).

Posted by Abby (Member # 582) on :

I figured that may be the case and went for cute pictures of baby polar bears instead.

Posted by H1ppychick (Member # 529) on :

Saltrock, hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! Everyone else - they're probably not a band much beloved of the forum but if you get the chance at all, then go and see Athlete on their current tour. They were absolutely wonderful tonight.

Now then. Anyone want to go and see Dylan Moran or Omid Djalili live in Bristol next year?

Posted by kovacs (Member # 28) on :

I saw Julian Barnes tonight, talking at Goldsmiths. He was a very gentle, self-effacing fellow, radiating quiet intelligence; unlike Martin Amis who was a risky, stellar presence at the same venue some time before.

I have refrained from posting on half a dozen boards since I got back from the free wine thing afterwards, because I know how drunk I am.

He was very very funny though

Have they got robots that can read images now? Coz if not then it would be good if everyone just made a gif of their email address for the benefit of those of us who aren't employed at GCHQ.

You could name the file firstname_lastnameAtYahooDotCoDotUK.gif (and hope the robot didn't notice).
