Gasp! I thought I'd started the exact same thread as Roy then. But I haven't. This is more Let other People do your work for you.

This isn't a good thread, not like those being described here, but it could be good for me, in that it could be helpful. It could also be helpful to other people if they see fit to use it for its original purpose.

It's a brain picking thread really, a short cut to achieving a work goal.

I need to know...

In the more 'significant' public schools, I understand there's usually a rousing speech made on the first day – something a bit Top Gun. You know the kind of thing, "You are the best of the best. You will have privilege and opportunity the like of which your unders can only dream. Always remember you are superior to the little people and act accordingly. Hold your head up high and know you have been part of a glorious tradition of excellence. You will be supermen!"

Is this a myth? If it isn't, could someone give me a realistic version of how this speech might really read.

What do you need to know?

I recall from Reality Bites that Winona Ryder delivered a valedictory speech. Googling for this will probably give you some good samples.

Thank you Kovacs.

unrelated, but this made me laugh. It's just been discovered that money that has been collected for a present to somebody who is leaving has been nicked.

at uni we were told on the first day by the principal that "we only have one rule here - do what you like, but don't frighten the horses!"

then someone from the su stood up and said "at the su we have a saying - where the fuck are the horses".

right on, brother. right on.

Is your boss going to put his/her hand in their wallet and pay for the leaving gift, Benway?

Posted by Dr. Benway (Member # 20) on :

it's my boss who's going, so probably not.

We didn't have one. I haven't heard of this in other schools, although if it had happened at ours I certainly wouldn't admit to it. That's just irredeemably naff. We didn't need to be told we were the best - we just knew.

Although we did have a pep talk when I reached the last year of prep school in which one of our teachers gravely informed us that we were the creme de la creme, and that the junior years looked up to us, and that we shouldn't do anything to dispel the illusion of greatness.

Like, for example, showing sensitive nine-year-olds hardcore porn until they cried.

Not you, Joan, Carter.

I went to a comprehensive school, albeit one with vast delusions of granduer, and as soon as standard grades (tr: GCSES) were over we got a wee speech on an almost monthly basis about how we were the greatest of the great because we had decided to stay on for Highers, and the usual stuff Carter about setting an example of moral and academic excellence for the nippers in years below. I think it depends on whether your headteacher loves giving that kind of speech or not.

was it the porn that made them cry, or the 'mutual'?

I've sickened even myself now.

We had a speech on our first day, but it was in Latin so I've no idea what it was about.

Take your pick - 'we just knew we were the best', 'creme de la creme', 'prep school', 'example to the juniors'.

But mainly I just wanted to use the Benway phrase so I could be in his gang.

Sigh.

Where's Stevie when you need him?

Yes. But you're doing a good job for now.

When I first went to university, we were given a rather poor orientation speech. Rather than being inspiring, as in the you're the best of the best, you privileged pricks example earlier, what I got was: "Look at the person sitting to the left and the right of you. When it's time for graduation, two of the three of you won't be here."

I know it was meant to frighten us into working hard, performing well, and so forth, but the school itself was such a clusterfuck that it really didn't matter. I ended up being one of the two who left, partly out of boredom but mostly because getting a job and being able to eat seemed like a fun thing to do.

Froopyscot I got that speech too. Instead of imspiring us to work it was like an invitation to sit back and ride it out as long as we could until the inevitable happened. What a stupid thing to say to 17- year- olds who have 'freedom' for the first time.

Our beginning of year school speech went along the lines of, "Don't nick the loo paper, don't leave syringes in the corridors, don't get pregnant or get anyone else pregnant, and if you have to fight, please don't try and leave too many bloodstains on the floors - the janitor's getting pissed off with it".

Inspirational stuff.

What do I need to know?

How did I manage to get wax in my [head] hair when I went to get my legs waxed today???

Does this mean my school lied to me? Am I not the 'creme de la creme'. Surely you can only have one 'creme de la creme' otherwise there would be no milk, just lots of cream.

You don't want to be the creme de la creme. It's longhand for '****'.

Heh, that brightened up an otherwise dull Monday. That's longhand for lol
