Hi, nerds!

A pal at work is fretting about security on his PC he's going with McAfee but has heard bad things, mainly from other people in the office. And me. Being a Mac user I have no interest or knowledge in security matters.

Could you guys with your massive throbbers advise on a suite of free downloads that would have his Windows XP machine sealed up tight as a drum?

Ta.

Virus Protection - Avast. It's free, it doesn't use much memory, it does the job incredibly well, and it announces in an awesome voice "Virus Database has been updated"

Spyware protection - Spy bot - Search & Destroy. Again it's free. It will immunise you against all common problems as well as fixing any that you have got before.

Firewall - Zone Alarm. It keeps trying to make you pay for the deluxe version, (once a year) but you can still just keep choosing the free option that does everything you could need.

Internet - Opera. Far more secure and far more useable than IE. I suppose he could use firefox but Opera is better.

With those four programs, I've browsed a lot of dodgy porn sites and have never had a problem with my computer.

Avast - definately the best Anti virus out there - I have been using it for I guess 6 years on a multitude of machines and have never had a virus once - any coming in get detected asap and are quickly dealt with.

For spyware, I've used Ad Aware which is a bit less intrusive but only good for a sweeper of the drives to remove Spyware. Still effective mind

Firewall - The windows once has been fine for me so far, in conjjunction with Avast, although maybe I should have another look at it.

Windows fire wall... Zonealarm... You call yourselves tech savvy?

Use the SPI firewall supplied in every decent router.

Software based firewalls... Jesus!

As to the jibe about Opera vs. Firefox... I bet you have a macbook and an iPhone too, huh CiH?

Opera = pants

Firefox = Nutz especially when combined with Adblock Plus and NoScript.

The above with Avast, I haven't had anything dodgy for years and I'm sure I don't have to tell you the types of places I frequent. :innocent:

I don't own a macbook or an iphone. Opera uses lower memory than Firefox, it renders pages faster than firefox, it has a damned good mail client, a torrent client. It also has mouse gestures which basically make browsing the internet so much more pleasant. Just doing a swing of your hand to go back/forward/reload.

The only thing it doesn't do out of the box that would be nice is Adblock, but it's easy to configure it to block ads.

How is Chrome faring in the browser wars? Searching reveals a bunch of articles about vulnerabilities but nothing that seems unlike the holes in the other browsers.

They shot themselves in the foot.

When it first came out, the privacy statement basically said that Google could not only have your first born, but also at least one ovary and one testicle of every living being in some sort of modern day Noah's Ark Indexing archive.

People got uber jittery and didn't 'explode' onto the scene like Firefox did.

I imagine when Cloud Computing becomes the norm, Chrome will come into its own as it was engineered to be a precurser anyway.
