Found this online test from HM Gov for those taking the citizenship test to practice on. I got 16 which is a definite failure - it's actually quite hard you know.

I guess those wishing to become citizens and taking the test will have specific material to read up on but some of the questions are a bit odd - I'll let you find out what they are, but what questions ought to be in there?

Potential Foreigner:

What is the traditional food of the UK?
A. Big Mac & Fries
B. Chicken Tikka Masala
C. Haiwain Pizza

What is the average penalty for driving in excess of 100mph if you are...
A. A politician
B. A premiere league footballer
C. A celebrity

I thought I was doing really well as the test went on.

You have failed the practice citizenship test.

Questions answered correctly: 8 out of 24 (33%)

My girlfriend had to take the test a couple of years ago. She went to classes and had to study hard to get it. It was completely daft, of course, but she wanted that red passport.

I got 46%.

I passed, but lots of them were guesses. They seemed an odd mix of questions to me, though I suppose if you read their 'summary of life in the UK' then their inclusion would make more sense. Some of it just doesn't seem relevant - how is it crucial to know whether schools have to be open 190 days or 200 days?

I got nine out of 24. Woo-Hoo! I beat mart!

Some stupid ones in there - like

'Many job applications will require a covering letter and...'

and then three things that could be the right answer (NI answer, Proof of ID, Curriculum Vitae).

Also I dropped a point on

"Is the statement below TRUE or FALSE?
'You can attend a hospital without a GP's letter only in the case of an emergency.'"

which I said was FALSE but the test said was TRUE, but which I know to be a LIE because I went to hospital a couple of times at university because I was too lazy to sign up to GP and needed some medical advice. They don't like it, but it can be done.

Also what does 'attending' a hospital actually involve? I didn't have a GP note when I attended the hospital for Alice's birth. Neither did Alice, for that matter.

I bet none of the staff had a note from their GP, either.

You have failed the practice citizenship test.

Questions answered correctly: 14 out of 24 (58%)

Which is brilliant !

If I ever lose my passport I'd be fucked.

Proof that guesswork can sometimes really pay off!

[Eek!]

So, what about my own set of questions? This test is drawn from the American citizenship test.

You answered 80% of questions correctly.

wow! I can't believe I beat froop on the US test. I got 90%, missing two, one of which was the question about what form I need to apply to become a naturalized citizen.
