Ok i'll heed the call for new threads...

So The Wire is finished, was it the finest television of all time? Did it end better than the Sopranos ? Was the newspaper storyline a weakness or did it raise questions about the media and its treatment of the problems discribed in the rest of the show?

Posted by sabian (Member # 6) on :

I keep hearing about The Wire as if it was the 2nd coming or something...

Is it really that good? Should I waste good HDD space to find out?

Posted by London (Member # 29) on :

I've been wondering that too. The last series I 'committed to' (can you say that) was Ugly Betty. It was great but then all the videos disappeared from Stage 6 and then Stage 6 died altogether and now I am bereft.

I've just finished watching Seasons 1-3, will buy Season 4 imminently. I think it's fucking aces. Best thing I've seen on telly in ages. Lester and Bubbles are my favourites.

Posted by Pink (Member # 459) on :

BM you are in for a treat by the end of season 3 i was thinking 'this is damn good'. By the end of season 4 I was thinking 'my god this is great'

Posted by Black Mask (Member # 185) on :

I like how it pulls you up short sometimes. Like with McNulty, he's such an arsehole, there I am thinking to myself "Why is he such an arsehole? He's, like, the central character!" and then I think, "Doh! I forgot. This The Wire."

I'm really impressed at the bravery of planning a five season show that follows a single investigation. And the characters..!? Prez! What a fucking idiot. STAY... IN... THE... OFFICE!

Omar and Mouzone are a pretty terrifying team, aren't they?

Posted by Pink (Member # 459) on :

This happened to me very quickly on in the first season up to that point Kima seemed to be portayed as the level headed 'good cop' you then see her kicking the crap out of a suspect during a raid. Thinking back it was Bodie that she does it to.

Sabian if you decide to 'obtain' it, and you really should. You may want to be careful of this thread as it looks like it might get a bit spoiler filled, and it WILL damage your enjoyment of the show.

I watched about three eps of The Wire after being told by many people that I'd love it, but I just found it drab. From time to time I think about trying again, but I doubt I ever shall.

The only things I watch regularly are My Name is Earl and Shameless, though, so maybe my opinion counts for shit.

Posted by doc d (Member # 781) on :

i'm redoing 1-4 in the run-up to 5.

it just goes off.

favecharacter:
prez.

for his growth.

omar.
because it's omar.

preston.
because.

Maybe I will have another go at the wire then. I watched a bit but I struggle with things where many of the characters look similar – white men in suits, or black men in sportswear in this case. Mafia films are a nightmare for me!
Though I was quite drunk/depressed/tranquilised at the time as well which probably didn’t help!

Posted by Pink (Member # 459) on :

This is one of the features of the programme, it gives no easy way in, but it is worth the effort. However the first time I watched it i spent many episodes thinking Idis Elba (who actually plays Stringer Bell) was in fact Avon Barksdale!

So any important pieces of information are contained within seeming trivial conversation or on the screen with no "flashing arrow" to point it out to you. As one of the detectives says at one point " ... and all the pieces matter"

Posted by missgolightly (Member # 34) on :

Luckily, Pink watched most of the first season before me, so I could continuously ask "Who's that? What are they doing? Why?" like an inquisitive three year old until I'd got my head around the whole thing.

I still haven't seen the last two episodes of season 5, and can't bloody wait til friday when he gets home and I can watch them.

Posted by doc d (Member # 781) on :

NO SPOILERS.
SERIOUS.

Posted by Sidney (Member # 399) on :

I'm not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen season five yet (and you absolutely must watch all of the seasons in order) but I will say that a couple of incidents in the run up to the end left me feeling like I'd been punched in the stomach. As J pointed out though "it's The Wire. You've got to suck it up". I didn't cry at any point, however. Not like I did when The Incident With Wallace occured.

But, yes. Omar = excellence and Bubbles = excellence and Dukie = heart wrenching.

Posted by Thorn Davis (Member # 65) on :

I like the idea that it's a kind of meta-performance and that we're all going to be astounded by the resultant movie when it turns out not to be a Borat style skit, but a beautifully conceived, heart-wrenching portrayal of a deluded character, put together with ingenuity and invention by Joaquin and Casey. My fear is that he really has completely lost his mind and is disintegrating in front of us, and will top himself/ OD within the next couple of years.

Posted by Jimmy Big Nuts (Member # 895) on :

what a way to go though. There's losing your mind, being all depressed and shit, and then there's losing your mind and starting a new career as a rapper. Maybe he'll do a total reggie perrin and end up moving from rapper to actor.

deep freeze was going to be a collaboration between jonesy and myself about somebody working on a research station in the arctic and something 'unusual' gets dug out of the ice. It's meta, see, because The Thing is all about hidden threats and people not being who they seem to be etc

That sounds kind of familiar. Something like, if you've got kids, you shouldn't be posting on a forum where the most popular jokes are ones about sex, rape, and sexual molestation. Because it somehow might filter down to your kids and cause them to suffer in some kind of abstract fashion.

I'm willing to do what fifichan, meg, kira, and so many others have done before me. I'm willing to 'bite the slippery bullet' and take one for tmo, if it will help restore unity. This situation has gone for too long. Bitterness, rivalry. Whispers and rumours. Lies and pain. We've squandered what we had. We've not just watched through the glazed eyes of a masturbation-induced coma as a whole stud farm bolted, slowly, to virtual pastures new. We've not just cannibalised ourselves for our own masochistic pleasure. We've taken something greater than ourselves - greater than this silly old pile of php and html - and brutally tortured it, transforming a wonderful, hope filled child into a snarling, hate filled adult, raping and lolling across the www like, dare I say it, so many, many, mexican eggs.

If you believe that my passing will save this child, then I will pass. If you believe that the winds of change will only blow when I have given up my posting rights, then, my friends, give them up I shall. If this forum can rise up, can spread its wings and fly once more towards the shimmering twin stars of lmao and rofl... if this forum can find the strength of body and of mind to make this journey.... then I will gladly lay down my keyboard to help it do so, if that is what is required.

Any 3D design experts in the house today? I kicked this render job off over an hour ago in max and it still hasn't completed the first frame.

Man, Pixar must've been so bored waiting for Toy Story to render. I mean you just sit there watching the four buckets chase each other around the screen like racing snails, but instead of slimey snail trails they leave behind fantastic quality rendered goodness. It's just so painfully slow...

Perhaps I need to adjust some 'settings'. Yeah, that'll be it. But do I cancel this job now, assuming that I'll find something to speed it up, or do I just let it finish? Vote now!

There's no working out required. I haven't paid to renew it. They'll take the site down for a bit, send me a reminder and after a month or two I'll remember to pay it, thinking "yeah, maybe I'll get round to doing that new website for myself this year", which I obviously won't.

Yes they're all my property now, as you'd know if you'd read the T&Cs.

I tried to read the T7C but the site is down. [Mad]

I want my images back.

If nothing else, this thread reminded me to go and transfer all of my domains over to Heart Internet, which I should have done about 6 months ago.

This also reminds me that I need to pay for my web hosting and domain name before March 5th. And that I need to ask Misc if we've got practice this weekend as chated about vaguely earlier on. And also to go take a wee because I'm bursting.

Yes, I think so.

You're right. I'll ask him.

Sorry guys, I broke a string last night so I don't think I'll be good for this weekend's practice [Frown]

Don't sweat it ringeaux, I've got a spare! I'll show you how to fit it if you like.

Actually, seriously speaking if you had a good guide on changing strings that'd be useful. It looks pretty straight forward, going by how the old ones are attached.

I know not to get hot and nervous an hour before the gig. That'll stop you from winding your top bass string until it snaps like a pylon power line.

Posted by MiscellaneousFiles (Member # 60) on :

Yes, avoid tuning a bass's E string to the pitch of a guitar's E string. Good advice there.

Always bring hair-spray.
